    RESISTANCE OF RUBBER CLONES RECOMMENDED IN INDONESIA TO CORYNESPORA AND COLLETOTRICHUM LEAF FALL DISEASES

    Leaf fall disease caused by Corynespora cassiicola and Colletotrichum sp. can causes reduction of latex production in rubber plantations. Hence screening for disease development in each rubber clone needs to be carried out. Resistance level of 25 rubber clones recommended in Indonesia to leaf fall diseases were examined on rubber plants grown in polybags placed in a greenhouse using three isolates each of C. cassiicola and Colletotrichum sp. isolated from the rubber clones RRIM 600, GT 1, and PR 303. The results showed that 9 rubber clones i.e AVROS 2037, BPM 1, BPM 109, IRR 42, IRR 107, IRR 220, PB 260, PB 330, and RRIC 100 had a high resistance to both the leaf fall diseases while 4 clones i.e BPM 24, PR 261, PR 300, and PR 303 had a low resistance.     DETERMINATION OF CHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF HYDROGENATED NATURAL RUBBER SYNTHESIZED AT SEMI PILOT SCALE

    The use of natural rubber goods for outdoor based applications like elastomeric bearing pads is limited by their low thermal oxidative resistance. This weakness could be improved by chemical modification such as diimide transfer hydrogenation of natural rubber in the latex phase. Diimide is a reactive hydrogen donor substance which is generated in situ by oxidation of hydrazine hydrate with hydrogen peroxide. In this research, the hydrogenated natural rubber was synthesized by diimide transfer hydrogenation at semi pilot scale at a capacity of 2.5 kg latex concentrated/batch. The aim of the research was to determine the chemical and mechanical properties of hydrogenated natural rubber obtained from the semi pilot scale reaction. Unmodified natural rubber was used as a control. The result of the evaluation showed that the diimide substance produced from a higher hydrogen peroxide concentration could effectively convert unsaturated C double bonds into saturated C single bonds in the natural rubber molecular chain. The improvement of the thermal oxidative resistance is illustrated by a higher plasticity retention index and less change in hardness and elasticity for hydrogenated natural rubber prepared from 35 phr hydrogen peroxide. This new type of modified natural rubber could potentially be a substitute for synthetic rubber used in the manufacturing of elastomeric bearing pads.Keywords: Diimide, hydrogenation, natural rubber, themal oxidative resistanc

    Automobile Industry is aptly called the 'engine of growth’ for any economy. There has been a steady and definite shift in the axis of Automobile Industry worldwide with, growing role and share of Asia in recent years. Within Asia, the role of China and India assumes significance in scripting the success story of the auto sector. Other countries in the region are also taking strides in the same direction. Automobile Industry has a diverse value chain which spans across several industries, including automotive tyres & other components. Automotive Tyres, having Natural Rubber as its prime raw material, is closely linked to the plantation sector. The NR sector already has a significant footprint in Asia, with ANRPC countries, located primarily in this region, accounting for over 90% of the global NR production. The Presentation traces the impressive growth of auto, tyre and rubber sectors in the major automobile & rubber producing & consuming Regions / countries in general and India in particular. The Presentation also examines the challenges to the synergy between the auto, tyre and rubber sectors that the growth is likely to pose in the future.     Tanaman bangun-bangun (Coleus amboinicus) merupakan tanaman indigenous asal Sumatera Utara yang belum banyak dibudidayakan secara kultur teknis. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah untuk memanfaatkan areal gawangan tanaman karet belum menghasilkan (TBM) dengan menanam tanaman bangun-bangun. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Kebun Percobaan Balai Penelitian Sungei Putih pada bulan Maret-Agustus 2015. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tanaman bangun-bangun dapat tumbuh baik di gawangan TBM karet. Tanaman ini dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai tanaman obat dan berpotensi sebagai antijamur untuk mengendalikan penyakit jamur akar putih (JAP). Tanaman bangun-bangun dapat menghambat serangan penyakit JAP dengan cara menanam langsung di lapangan, menggunakan ekstrak akar tanaman atau kombinasi keduanya. Kandungan protein pada tanaman ini juga dapat meningkatkan kesuburan tanah, khususnya dalam meningkatkan ketersedian N dalam tanah

    Perkecambahan dan pertumbuhan awal biji karet bervariasi dipengaruhi oleh tingkat viabilitas biji. Mikroba endofitik diduga berperan penting dalam menjaga viabilitas karet. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji spesies-spesies mikroba endofitik di dalam biji karet viabilitas tinggi (vigor) maupun biji viabilitas rendah (kurang vigor) perannya dalam pertumbuhan biji karet. Penelitian ini menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) non faktorial dengan tujuh perlakuan dan lima ulangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa empat spesies jamur Trichoderma viridae, Trichoderma koninggi, Aspergillus flavus dari biji vigor tinggi mampu menekan pertumbuhan Penicillium sp dari biji kurang vigor yang merupakan satu-satunya mikroba yang dapat diisolasi. T viridae, T. koninggi dan A. flavus menghambat pertumbuhan Penicillium sp. secara in vitro. Aplikasi masing-masing jamur tersebut mempercepat masa perkecambahan biji karet, pertumbuhan tanaman dan mempengaruhi arsitektur akar tanaman karet. Kata kunci: Hevea brasiliensis, mikroba endofitik, perkecambahan biji

    PAKET TEKNOLOGI OPTIMASI PERTUMBUHAN DAN PRODUKTIVITAS TANAMAN KARET PADA DAERAH BERIKLIM KERING

    Areal pengembangan tanaman karet di Indonesia hampir tersebar pada seluruh propinsi, termasuk di wilayah Indonesia timur yang beriklim kering. Meskipun luas perkebunan karet di wilayah beriklim kering tergolong sangat kecil (sekitar 1,6%), namun pengembangannya perlu dilakukan seoptimal mungkin. Pada daerah kering dengan curah hujan < 1500 mm/tahun, air merupakan faktor pembatas utama terhadap laju pertumbuhan dan produktivitas tanaman karet. Kondisi tersebut (iklim kering) sukar dimodifikasi dan dikendalikan kecuali dalam skala mikro, yaitu melalui pendekatan dengan cara penyesuaian antara kultur teknis dengan karakter iklim yang ada. Penerapan paket teknologi meliputi teknologi penyediaan bahan tanam yang sesuai pada daerah beriklim kering, teknologi manajemen lengas, dan penerapan teknologi sistem eksploitasi yang tepat diharapkan dapat mengoptimalkan pertumbuhan dan produksi lateks pada tanaman karet. Hasil pengamatan di beberapa kebun karet di Jawa Timur menunjukkan bahwa sebelum diterapkan paket teknologi, pertumbuhan TBM karet cenderung di bawah standar, namun setelah diterapkan paket teknologi performa tanaman dan pertumbuhan lilit batang menjadi lebih baik. Penerapan paket teknologi pada TM, berupa penjagaan lengas tanah, peningkatan efektivitas serapan hara, dan penerapan sistem eksploitasi berdasarkan tipologinya mampu mendukung optimasi penyadapan sehingga produksi lateks meningkat
