The Waste Land en español (1930-2022)
Between 1930 and 2022, no fewer than 35 people (including professional translators, scholars and amateurs) met the formidable challenge of translating into Spanish either The Waste Land in full or only some of its sections. With varying degrees of success, these translations found their way into the pages of single books, anthologies, literary magazines or journals both in Spain and in Hispanic-American countries such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Santo Domingo. Undertaking a close analysis of all these versions not only provides an excellent opportunity to revisit T.S. Eliot’s best-known poem on the centenary of its publication, but may also contribute to the study of the complex process of its retranslation over more than nine decades.
Crisis is the word that seems to best characterize the twenty-first century conjuncture. The bleakness and instability of an uncertain and troubled present often encourages the proliferation of nostalgic images of past times, which become sweetened scenarios for escapist memories. On the other hand, the local and global current economic, social and political divisions have also brought to light the need to revisit certain aspects of the past from other perspectives. This is the case of Gurinder Chadha’s films, which frequently advocate for the crossing of cultural borders by showing the hybrid nature of communities and their heritage. Following Robert Stam’s cultural and filmic methodology which includes a transdisciplinary, transmediatic, transtextual, transregional, and transartistic approach (2019), I aim to analyze Chadha’s Viceroy’s House as a film that proposes a revision of India’s Partition while offering a critical transnational and intersectional connection of contemporary global and local scenarios.
Innovative Poetry in Britain today
Innovative Poetry in Britain has undergone considerable change in how it is published and read in recent years. This article examines Richard Caddel and Peter Quartermain’s 1998 introduction to their anthology OTHER: British and Irish Poetry since 1970, to derive concepts useful in surveying the field. These concepts include: the poetics of displacement, the politics of British identity, and the tradition of dissent. The article introduces the work of three innovative poets: Robert Sheppard (b. 1955), Caroline Bergvall (b. 1962) and Andrea Brady (b. 1974), in order to illustrate the dynamic range of this writing. Some Reflections on Reading Contemporary British Poetry
The aim of the present article is to consider several aspects related to the reception of contemporary British poetry. An interview with the poet Michael Symmons Roberts will help us in our discussion. We will bear in mind Michael Schmidt’s experience as an editor and his views on the role of literary critics with respect to poetry readership as well. In addition, we will provide a brief account of some British poetry magazines and of their impact in the forging of a wide and varied poetry reading audience. We will also argue that University poetry teachers play a decisive role in this matter as well.
This research shows how the gender perspective can be introduced into Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate by focusing on the work of two Anglo-Saxon women writers considered to be bastions of feminism: Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) and Sylvia Plath (1932-1963). The research design follows a methodology known as Design-Based Research (de Benito Crosetti y Salinas Ibáñez 2016) which offers as a product a reading guide in the form of a literary constellation (Jover 2009, Garvis 2015) that includes the following selection of English-language adaptations for young people: Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), A Room of One’s Own (1929), Three Women (1962), The Bell Jar (1963) and Ariel (1965). The value of this research lies in showing the feasibility of bringing Woolf’s and Plath’s literary production closer to young audiences, presenting teaching material in English that is accessible and adapted to their language level. The reading of these works contributes to raising students’ awareness and developing a critical awareness of the gender perspective.
The objective of this text is to critically analyze the question: what is social innovation from a gender perspective?, with emphasis, above all, on the purpose of innovation. The concrete answer to the question would be: it is the one that responds to the challenges and needs of citizens. Today’s questions must focus on the why, how, with whom and what of public innovation. Innovation represents an ecosystem of interactions and its mediation and purpose must be none other than the improvement and dignification of the lives of the groups to whom it is addressed. For this reason, the contrast of ideas and foundations is proposed as a methodological narrative that connects actors/actresses and diverse scenarios and invites action. The result? To insist that public innovation is either social or it is not; and it is linked to the gender perspective, or it is neither innovation, nor social, ... nor public.
This article presents a university course that intersects humanities and women’s health in order to encourage students to develop a critical attitude towards the mistreatment of women’s bodies by the medical institution and the patriarchal establishment. To this end, the pathologization of the female body and its counter-discourse in literary texts and films relevant to the Latin American feminist movement are explored. The course uses the tools of feminist pedagogy based on dialogue and action for social change; it also includes literary and film materials, such as the poem “Menstruation” by the Nicaraguan Gioconda Belli, with which it aims to inspire the actors in the class, beyond developing an academic analysis, to talk about their own experiences around this bodily processes. The aim is to translate these reflections into action in order to establish links with vulnerable communities and feminist activism.
