Prevalence of activities in later life across European regions

    Get PDF
The active ageing policy supports several types of activities, including labour force participation, caregiving, social participation, and physical activity. The paper illustrates the prevalence of supported activities across individual characteristics and four supra-national European regions to assess how these activities are available for specific groups of older people. The analysis draws on wave 6 from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe held in 2015. A set of figures describes the availability of activities sorted by gender, age, health status, and the level of education in 17 European countries divided into four regions, and thus, presents the unavailable descriptive data important for researchers and policymakers. The results most of all show that the majority of the 50+ population engages in vigorous physical activity, whilst labour force participation and caregiving concern about one-third of it, and other activities much less. The findings show the inadequacy of the active ageing as a uniform context-insensitive EU policy and detect its potential for raising inequalities in later life, whilst the theoretical implications are discussed

The communicative structure of a literary work is formed by lines organizing dialogic relations at different levels of this structure, and the universal model of these relations can be denoted by the dichotomy «Me - the Other». As applied to Romain Gary’s novel «Promise at Dawn» the modification of the line “author - hero” can be analysed within the framework of this dichotomy. The opposition «Me - the Other» in the novel transforms into «Me - the Other Me» and acquires a number of meanings: a child and an adult, conceived and achieved, promised and fulfilled. The author of the article shows how the subjectivity of the presentation is changed by the presence of the second storyteller - the voice of an adult

Effects of Dietary Nitrates on Time Trial Performance in Athletes with Different Training Status: Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Much research has been done in sports nutrition in recent years as the demand for performance-enhancing substances increases. Higher intake of nitrates from the diet can increase the bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) via the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Nevertheless, the increased availability of NO does not always lead to improved performance in some individuals. This review aims to evaluate the relationship between the athlete's training status and the change in time trial performance after increased dietary nitrate intake. Articles indexed by Scopus and PubMed published from 2015 to 2019 were reviewed. Thirteen articles met the eligibility criteria: clinical trial studies on healthy participants with different training status (according to VO2max), conducting time trial tests after dietary nitrate supplementation. The PRISMA guidelines were followed to process the review. We found a statistically significant relationship between VO(2max)and ergogenicity in time trial performance using one-way ANOVA (p= 0.001) in less-trained athletes (VO2< 55 mL/kg/min). A strong positive correlation was observed in experimental situations using a chronic supplementation protocol but not in acute protocol situations. In the context of our results and recent histological observations of muscle fibres, there might be a fibre-type specific role in nitric oxide production and, therefore, supplement of ergogenicity

Quo vadis, Kosovo? : Security Challenges for a Small State

    Get PDF
The text addresses the political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal challenges Kosovo faces. The author claims that Kosovo faces many challenges, though without solving the status issue, no other challenges could be addressed. The Kosovo question remains the main conundrum in the Western Balkan region.

Tracing mobility patterns through the 6th-5th millennia BC in the Carpathian Basin with strontium and oxygen stable isotope analyses

The complexity of Neolithic population movements and their interpretation through material culture have been the subject of archaeological research for decades. One of the dominant narratives proposes that groups from the Starčevo-Ko¨ro¨ s-Criş complex spread from the central towards the northern Balkans in the Early Neolithic and eventually brought the Neolithic lifestyle into present-day Hungary. Broad geographical migrations were considered to shape the continuous expansion of Neolithic groups and individuals. However, recent archaeological research, aDNA, and isotope analyses challenged the synchronous appearance of specific material culture distributions and human movement dynamics through emphasizing communication networks and socio-cultural transformation processes. This paper seeks to retrace the complexity of Neolithic mobility patterns across Hungary by means of strontium and oxygen stable isotope analyses, which were performed on a total of 718 human dental enamel samples from 55 Neolithic sites spanning the period from the Starčevo to the Balaton-Lasinja culture in Transdanubia and from the Ko¨ro¨s to the Tiszapolga ´ r cultural groups on the Great Hungarian Plain (Alfo¨ ld). This study presents the largest strontium and oxygen isotope sample size for the Neolithic Carpathian Basin and discusses human mobility patterns on various geographical scales and throughout archaeological cultures, chronological periods, and sex and gender categories in a multiproxy analysis. Based on our results, we discuss the main stages of the Neolithisation processes and particularly trace individual movement behaviour such as exogamy patterns within extensive social networks. Furthermore, this paper presents an innovative differentiation between mobility patterns on small, micro-regional, and supra-regional scales, which provides new insights into the complex organisation of Neolithic communities. The complexity of Neolithic population movements and their interpretation through material culture have been the subject of archaeological research for decades. Fiction and Social Knowledge : Towards a Strong Program in the Sociology of Literature

    Get PDF
Following the strong program in cultural sociology, I propose a strong program in the sociology of liter-ature, which treats literary pieces rightly as relatively autonomous cultural entities and “independent var-iables”. To outline the epistemological foundations of the new research program, I compare how social knowledge comes into existence through the sociological text and the text of literary fiction. I discuss the representation of social reality in interpretive research, with Isaac Reed’s book Interpretation and Social Knowledge as a starting point. To claim literary autonomy, I outline some of the aspects which social the-ory shares with literary fiction. I am mainly interested in how social theory and literary fiction mediate social knowledge to their readers via the aesthetic experience. I identify two main categories of social knowledge mediated by literature: existential understanding and Zeitgeist. Discussing the sociological treatment of several novels, I look at how these two categories intertwine and support each other to create colorful, sensitive, but also robust and deep social knowledge, which condenses aesthetic, existential, and non-discursive aspects of social experience together with the “big picture” of whole societies. I argue that only by overcoming the often-assumed inferiority of literature in sociological research can sociology real-ize its full potential in understanding the meanings of social life

Application of fluorescent light microscopy to enhanced lithofacies analysis of Jurassic carbonate rocks, SE Bohemian Massif

    Get PDF
Upper Jurassic limestones and dolomites of the Vranovice Formation occur on the southeastern slopes of the Bohemian Massif below the Western Carpathian thrust belt. They represent a special type of reservoir rocks in the potential geothermal systems and exhibit highly variable porosity, permeability, and flow mechanisms due to different type of diagenesis and pervasive dolomitization. Fluorescence and translucent light microscopy was used for more detailed petrographic analysis of Vranovice limestones and dolomites. Isopachous, syntaxial and dolomitic cements were distinguished along with fossils recrystallization. Two generations of dolomite were identified – replacement dolomite and zonal cementation dolomite, what suggests a number of changes in the formation water chemistry during the dolomitization process. Extent of the observed dolomitization is inversely related to the porosity of the Jurassic rocks. Postdiagenetic generation of fissures cutting the strata due to tectonic deformation is documented by bright fluorescent color. In the studied samples of Vranovice limestones and dolomites the fissures represent the most important migration pathways, more than pore throats themselves. Further genetic information on petroleum migration is interpreted from intercrystalline porosity filled with precipitated solid bitumen. Present results provide basis for further investigations in pore-water-rock interactions and changes in chemical conditions during diagenesis.Svrchně jurské vápence a dolomity vranovického souvrství se nacházejí jako autochtonní relikty na jv. okraji Českého masivu, pod příkrovy Západních Karpat. Představují speciální typ rezervoárových hornin s velmi proměnlivou porozitou a propustností. Současné výsledky poskytují základ k dalšímu studiu interakcí pór-voda-hornina a změnám chemických podmínek během diageneze

Toward a Theory of Atypical Media Work and Social Hope

    Get PDF
Most media work today takes place under atypical conditions, i.e. media professionals such as journalists, musicians, filmmakers, advertising creatives and game developers generally work without open-ended contracts. In this essay, a theory of atypical media work is outlined highlighting this way of working and being at work from the current culture of capitalism. Further, it also throws light on how dualisms, dominating the discourse on media work – such as contracted versus freelance labour, primary and secondary sector employment, good versus bad jobs, paid versus unpaid work – are not as useful as they seem to be is shown. It also delves into the different ways of making precarity, precariousness, constrained autonomy and lack of agency and highlights themas the key problematic features of atypical work – productive (beyond productivity narratives). Throughout the argument, the reasons and motivations for (doing and studying) atypical media work are articulated with a distinct sense of shared social hope
