Cost of Living, Living Wages, and Minimum Wages in EU-27 countries
In the last decade the concept of living wage has received renewed international attention. This report describes the calculation of living wage in the EU-27 countries. The proposed approach is innovative in the way that it uses prices collected through web-surveys in combination with the standard survey data to provide timely, and reasonably accurate estimates of living wage. The calculation is based on approximately 300,000 prices of goods and services and 100,000 housing prices in total. The estimated living wage represents the amount of money sufficient to enable the cultural and social participation in society. Living wage is corrected for income tax, and social contributions to be comparable to minimum wage and real wages which are gross earnings. The living wage is estimated for 27 EU countries and rates are contrasted with the national statutory minimum wages. Because living wage is normatively based it offers an additional metric of economic adequacy that reflects the needs of workers and their cost of living
Temporal Trends of Persistent Organic Pollutants across Africa after a Decade of MONET Passive Air Sampling
The Global Monitoring Plan of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) was established to generate long-term data necessary for evaluating the effectiveness of regulatory measures at a global scale. After a decade of passive air monitoring (2008-2019), MONET is the first network to produce sufficient data for the analysis of long-term temporal trends of POPs in the African atmosphere. This study reports concentrations of 20 POPs (aldrin, chlordane, chlordecone, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, endosulfan, HBCDD, HCB, HCHs, heptachlor, hexabromobiphenyl, mirex, PBDEs, PCBs, PCDDs, PCDFs, PeCB, PFOA, and PFOS) monitored in 9 countries (Congo, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, and Sudan). As of January 1, 2019, concentrations were in the following ranges (pg/m(3)): 0.5-37.7 (Sigma 6PCB), 0.006-0.724 (Sigma 17PCDD/F), 0.05-5.5 (Sigma 9PBDE), 0.6-11.3 (BDE 209), 0.1-1.8 (Sigma 3HBCDD), 1.8-138 (Sigma 6DDT), 0.1-24.3 (Sigma(3)endosulfan), 0.6-14.6 (Sigma 4HCH), 9.1-26.4 (HCB), 13.8-18.2 (PeCB). Temporal trends indicate that concentrations of many POPs (PCBs, DDT, HCHs, endosulfan) have declined significantly over the past 10 years, though the rate was slow at some sites. Concentrations of other POPs such as PCDD/Fs and PBDEs have not changed significantly over the past decade and are in fact increasing at some sites, attributed to the prevalence of open burning of waste (particularly e-waste) across Africa. Modeled airflow back-trajectories suggest that the elevated concentrations at some sites are primarily due to sustained local emissions, while the low concentrations measured at Mt. Kenya represent the continental background level and are primarily influenced by long-range transport
Oceanic long-range transport of organic additives present in plastic products: an overview
Most plastics are made of persistent synthetic polymer matrices that contain chemical additives in significant amounts. Millions of tonnes of plastics are produced every year and a significant amount of this plastic enters the marine environment, either as macro- or microplastics. In this article, an overview is given of the presence of marine plastic debris globally and its potential to reach remote locations in combination with an analysis of the oceanic long-range transport potential of organic additives present in plastic debris. The information gathered shows that leaching of hydrophobic substances from plastic is slow in the ocean, whereas more polar substances leach faster but mostly from the surface layers of the particle. Their high content used in plastic of several percent by weight allows also these chemicals to be transported over long distances without being completely depleted along the way. It is therefore likely that various types of additives reach remote locations with plastic debris. As a consequence, birds or other wildlife that ingest plastic debris are exposed to these substances, as leaching is accelerated in warm-blooded organisms and in hydrophobic fluids such as stomach oil, compared to leaching in water. Our estimates show that approximately 8 ' 100-18 ' 900 t of various organic additives are transported with buoyant plastic matrices globally with a significant portion also transported to the Arctic. For many of these chemicals, long-range transport (LRT) by plastic as a carrier is their only means of travelling over long distances without degrading, resulting in plastic debris enabling the LRT of chemicals which otherwise would not reach polar environments with unknown consequences. The transport of organic additives via plastic debris is an additional long-range transport route that should also be considered under the Stockholm Convention
Modernism and Cultural Politics in Inter-war Austria : The Case of Clemens Holzmeister
This article examines the work of the Austrian architect Clemens Holzmeister. A leading representative of Austrian architecture between the wars, and a significant figure in the i95os and i96os as teacher of the new generation of Austrian architects including Hans Hollein and Gustav Peichl, Holzmeister presents a perplexing image. In the i920s, he played an important role in the early architectural projects of Red Vienna, but in the following decade he endorsed the Austrofascist regime of Engelbert Dollfuß and Kurt Schuschnigg of i934-38. This article argues that his work presents other interpretative challenges too, for he was a prolific designer of churches, which have seldom been integrated into wider narratives of modern architecture. However his work is viewed, it was an important barometer of wider cultural and political currents in inter-war Austria, in particular the country's attempt to construct a meaningful identity after the collapse of the Habsburg empire. The aim of the article is not to rehabilitate or recover Holzmeister, but to consider the light his work casts on inter-war cultural politics in Austria, as well as the broader questions over the implicit value judgements that inform histories of modern architecture
Microbiome Associated with Slovak Traditional Ewe's Milk Lump Cheese
Worldwide consumers increasingly demand traditional/local products, to which those made from ewe's milk belong. In Slovakia, dairy products made from ewe's milk have a long tradition. A total of seventeen farmhouse fresh ewe's milk lump cheeses from various local farm producers in central Slovakia were sampled at farms and then analyzed. Based on the sequencing data analysis, the phylum Firmicutes dominated (60.92%) in ewe's lump cheeses, followed with the phylum Proteobacteria (38.23%), Actinobacteria (0.38%) and Bacteroidetes (0.35%). The phylum Firmicutes was represented by six genera, among which the highest amount possessed the genus Streptococcus (41.13%) followed with the genus Lactococcus (8.54%), Fructobacillus (3.91%), Enterococcus (3.18%), Staphylococcus (1.80%) and the genus Brochotrix (0.08%). The phylum Proteobacteria in ewe's lump cheeses involved eight Gram-negative genera: Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, Ewingella, Escherichia-Shigella, Pantoea and Moraxella. The phylum Bacteroidetes involved three genera: Bacteroides, Sphingobacterium and Chrysobacterium. Results presented are original; the microbiome of Slovak ewe's milk lump cheese has been not analyzed at those taxonomic levels up to now

Otraženije revoljucionnych sobytij 1905 goda v rasskaze L. N. Andrejeva «Gubernator»
Stat’ja posvjaščena izučeniju rasskaza L. N. Andrejeva «Gubernator» i otobraženija v nem revoljucionnych sobytij 1905 goda. Pisatel’ ne vosproizvodit istoričeskije fakty s predel’noj točnost’ju, no proizvedennyj analiz rasskaza pozvoljajet predpoložit’, čto on javilsja otklikom Andrejeva na «Krovavoje voskresen’je» i posledujuščeje ubijstvo moskovskogo general-gubernatora Sergeja Aleksandroviča. No kak i vo mnogich proizvedenijach Andrejeva, opisannoje v dannom rasskaze proisšestvije vtorostepenno i v bol’šej stepeni javljajetsja perelomnym momentom, sil’no povlijavšim na glavnogo geroja. The article is devoted to the study of the story of L. N. Andreyev "The Governor" and selected revolutionary events of 1905. The writer does not reproduce historical facts with utmost precision, but the analysis of the story suggests that it was Andreev's response to Bloody Sunday and the subsequent murder of Moscow's governor-general Sergei Alexandrovich. But as in many works by Andreyev, the incident described in this story is secondary and becomes a turning point that has greatly influenced the main hero. The governor, who is part of the bureaucratic machine, passes the most difficult way to realize his inhuman order to shoot people, which, according to the hero, was not a state of necessity. Andreyev in the story highlights the role of man in the course of historical of events, his ability or inability to show compassion and humanity, his will to be guided not by the logic of power, but by the moral values
The Virgilian Cento Progne et Philomela (Anth. Lat. 13 R) : Towards a Solution for a Mythological Riddle
This paper deals with the 24-line mythological epyllion Progne et Philomela (Anth. Lat. 13 R), fashioned out of Virgil´s lines. The aim is to shed some light on the most intriguing parts of the poem, in particular the puzzling network of family relationships and the extended talking-blood metaphor. It is claimed that the general ambiguity of the text is a purposefully adopted authorial strategy rather than a by-product of the cento technique and that the cento might have been written as a sort of mythological riddle to be solved by its readers.Článek se věnuje krátkému mytologickému epylliu Progne et Philomela (Anth.
