Byzantium and the First Crusade: Three Avenues of Approach
No full textA recurring theme in the historiography of the First Crusade is that of the Byzantine emperor asking Pope Urban to send a small contingent against the Turks and receiving instead vast armies over which he had no control. The crusade was thus completely unexpected and the emperor played no part in its genesis. Recent work has challenged that thesis and further approaches have emerged. A second theory argues that this was a novel departure in foreign policy. The emperor was in fact deeply involved in the origins of the First Crusade and played a leading role in shaping its ideals and goals. The third approach is more modest in scope: it argues that he was certainly involved but this was no unprecedented innovation, simply the extension of a tried and tested response to crisis. This response involved seeking outside allies, providing them with a financial incentive and even bringing a spiritual element into the agreement. It was the use of the last of these standard tactics that was to lead to misunderstandings between the Byzantine emperor and the crusaders.Un tema recurrente en la historiografía de la Primera Cruzada es el del emperador bizantino pidiendo al papa Urbano que envíe un pequeño contingente contra los turcos y recibiendo a cambio vastos ejércitos sobre los que no tenía control alguno. La cruzada sería así completamente inesperada y el emperador no habría tenido papel alguno en su génesis. Algunas publicaciones recientes han puesto en tela de juicio esta tesis y propuesto nuevas interpretaciones. Una segunda teoría defiende que esta iniciativa supuso la puesta en marcha de una nueva política exterior: el emperador estaba, de hecho, muy implicado en los orígenes de la Primera Cruzada y jugó un papel vital en la formación de sus ideales y objetivos. La tercera explicación tiene un alcance más modesto: defiende que, sin duda, el emperador estuvo implicado, pero que no existió ninguna innovación sin precedentes, sino simplemente la extensión de una respuesta a la crisis ya ensayada antes con éxito. Tal reacción implicaba ir en busca de aliados exteriores, proporcionarles un incentivo financiero e incluso llevar un elemento espiritual al acuerdo. Anna Komnene and her Sources for Military Affairs in the Alexiad
No full textWith the intensive focus on military affairs in the Alexiad provoking contentious theories and much debate, this article investigates more closely the sources of information available to Anna Komnene for her coverage of war during the reign of Alexios Komnenos. Though Anna discloses more about her sources than most Byzantine historians, it is argued that some of these claims, particularly those regarding her own capacity to witness events and converse with veteran participants, are somewhat disingenuous, intended to illustrate her adherence to traditional modes of inquiry and thus gain credence for her history. Without discounting the contribution of oral traditions of storytelling to the Alexiad, the study favours the growing consensus that Anna was more reliant on written material, especially campaign dispatches and military memoirs.L’importance accordée par l’Alexiade aux questions militaires a suscité des théories controversées et nombre de débats. Cet article examine de plus près les sources dont disposait Anna Comnène pour son récit de la guerre sous le règne d’Alexis Comnène. Bien que Anna nous renseigne davantage sur ses sources que la plupart des historiens byzantins, on a néanmoins postulér que certaines de ses démarches, en particulier celle concernant sa capacité à rendre compte des événements et de faire parler les vétérans, peuvent s’avérer fourbes, vouées à montrer son adhésion aux modes traditionnels d’enquête et donc à donner plus de crédibilité à son histoire. Sans négliger l’apport fondamental des témoignages oraux dans la rédaction de l’Alexiade, la présente étude privilégie l’opinion majoritaire qui pense qu’Anna s’est davantage fondée sur des documents écrits, en particulier les dépêches et les écrits des militaires
La Geografía de Tolomeo en un impreso anotado por Niclás Múrmuris propiedad de Diego Hurtado de Mendoza
No full textAmong other volumes of the same work, the Spanish humanist Diego Hurtado de Mendoza possessed the editio princeps of Ptolemy’s Geography, printed in Basilea by Froben (1533) and now preserved with the rest of his library at the Real Biblioteca del Monasterio de El Escorial with the signature 117.VII.19. This printed book is singular for containing many scholia and corrections on the text added by Nikolaos Murmuris, a Greek scribe that copied completely or partially twelve manuscripts for Mendoza between 1551 and 1553. The analysis and the collatio of the scholia and the corrections added by Murmuris to the printed volume have allowed to identify its source: a Vatican codex (Vat. gr. 176) containing the commentary composed by Nikephoros Gregoras and Isaak Argyros on Ptolemy’s Geography.Entre otros volúmenes de la misma obra, el humanista español Diego Hurtado de Mendoza poseía la editio princeps de la Geografía de Tolomeo, impresa por Froben en Basilea (a. 1533) y conservada en la actualidad con el resto de su biblioteca en la Real Biblioteca del Monasterio de El Escorial, con la signatura 117.VII.19. La particularidad de dicho impreso reside en que contiene numerosos comentarios marginales y correcciones al texto añadidos por Nicolás Múrmuris, un escriba griego que copió para Mendoza, total o parcialmente, doce manuscritos entre 1551 y 1553. El análisis y la colación de los escolios y correcciones añadidos por Múrmuris en el impreso escurialense han posibilitado la identificación de su fuente: un códice vaticano (Vat. gr. 176) con el comentario compuesto por Nicéforo Gregorás e Isaac Argiro a la Geografía de Tolomeo

No full textIf we understand the notion of insubordination as an act of disobedience that challenges authority, Chicana feminist epistemologies tracing lesbian desire and the queer body must be considered as the most critical paradigms of conceptual rebelliousness.
The notion of insubordination, as I intend to theorize in this essay, not only defies the “Anglo-American” monolith signifier, but also represents the possibilities of cultural heterogeneity embedded in the struggles against the tyranny of hegemony and heteronormativity. As demonstrated in the much-acclaimed theories of Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga and the digital art of Alma López, the insubordinate body must convey an urgent sensibility of rebellion to dismantle the structures that make them feel invisible and powerless. While insubordination and its related signifiers — oppositional knowledge and resistance— are not necessarily new markers in theorizing Chicana sexuality and feminist epistemologies, the concepts are fundamentally essential to revisit and unpack the voices/subjectivities articulating the urgency to “decolonize” from repressive systems of domination.Si entendemos la noción de insubordinación como un acto de desobediencia que desafía a la autoridad, las epistemologías feministas chicanas que trazan el deseo lésbico y el cuerpo queer deben considerarse como los paradigmas más críticos de la rebeldía conceptual.
La noción de insubordinación, como pretendo teorizar en este ensayo, no sólo desafía el significante monolítico "angloamericano", sino que también representa las posibilidades de la heterogeneidad cultural incrustada en las luchas contra la tiranía de la hegemonía y la heteronormatividad. Como demuestran las aclamadas teorías de Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga y el arte digital de Alma López, el cuerpo insumiso debe transmitir una urgente sensibilidad de rebelión para desmantelar las estructuras que les hacen sentirse invisibles e impotentes. Mientras que la insubordinación y sus significantes relacionados -conocimiento oposicional y resistencia- no son necesariamente nuevos marcadores en la teorización de la sexualidad chicana y las epistemologías feministas, los conceptos son fundamentalmente esenciales para revisar y desempacar las voces/subjetividades que articulan la urgencia de "descolonizarse" de los sistemas represivos de dominación
