Identidad y estrategias discursivas.

    Get PDF
This article tries to understand semiotically the content of the signs that immigrants use to ask for money on the streets. To this end, a semiolinguistic and sociocultural approach is implemented to analyze the dominant discursive strategies used in these signs and their relationship with the construction of an identity narrative. Based on Charaudeau's model, we propose the “personal help sign” as a discursive genre. Methodologically, an analysis of the corpus of 10 messages written by people located at the traffic lights of the streets of Valledupar is carried out, between September and December 2018. With this material, a semiolinguistic theoretical model is applied to critically place it in the urban social conflict of the begging and immigration in Colombia. Keywords: Immigration, panhandling signs, discourse analysis, begging.

    No full text

Of Blackboards and Bathrooms: Space as Metaphor for Power Relations in Hidden Figures (2016)

    No full text
This paper examines the film Hidden Figures from a critical perspective which combines concepts of intersectionality, gatekeeping, and spatial analysis. Through its depiction of the space race in 1960s America, the film superficially focuses on outer space. Nevertheless, much can be gleaned about the inclusion and exclusion of groups and individuals within the inner space of the NASA campus. The analysis thus centers around two questions; the question of who cannot access spaces, privileges, and knowledge, as well as the question of who can. In emphasizing the role of gatekeeper, more attention is afforded to the male characters in the film, which have received little previous regard in comparison to the three Black female leads. In this paper, I argue that the White men’s range of movement and their degree of belonging at NASA stand in crucial relation and opposition to the Black heroines. Three characters have been chosen to exemplify this point; Katherine Johnson, Al Harrison, and Paul Stafford, who interact with one another in a triangular relation of inclusions and exclusions. Five locations have been selected to illustrate their interplay in terms of power and space; the West Computing Group, the Space Task Group, the bathroom, the hallway, and the home.       &nbsp

“Their Time, Their Moment, Their City”: A Critique and Black Feminist Reading of Harlem

    No full text
This article analyses Tracy Oliver’s comedy series Harlem (2021) through the lens of Black Feminism. Invoking combined traces of Living Single (1993-1998) and Sex and the City (1998-2004), I contend Harlem aims to fill in the representation void that has erased Black women from mainstream comedies that are reduced to the white experience as it also aims to transgress the stigmatizing image of Black women in mainstream popular culture. In this manner, Oliver’s Harlem addresses several aspects of the Black female experience and shows the gendered racism Black women endure, such as racial stereotypes, medical mistreatment, or white women’s tears, among many others, prioritizing social accuracy and racial sensibilities through comedy as it follows the lives of four Black women in the neighborhood of Harlem in the twenty-first century

It is offered here a Spanish translation of Κατὰ μακρογενείου γέροντος, with introduction, notes and interpreting commentary; it is highlighted that this work represents the genre satura in Byzantium, according to a large tradition assumed by the 'classicism' of the XIIth century, that is represented also by Ἀμαθής, Κατὰ φιλοπόρνου γραός and Φιλοπλάτων; these works have similarities with Κατὰ μακρογενείου γέροντος, especially about their central theme: the opposition between 'to be' and 'to appear'.Se ofrece una traducción española del texto mencionado, con introducción, anotación y comentario interpretativo, y se destaca que la obra representa el género satura en Bizancio, según una tradición amplia recogida por el 'clasicismo' del s.

Although plagiarism has a much longer history, many teachers of English have noticed that the amount of copying has increased alongside the use of the Internet. The paper begins with a review of the literature demonstrates that although much attention has been paid to undergraduates in academic environments, little attention has been paid to plagiarism in schools. Other studies indicate that plagiarism is more common when people are writing in their L2, and when working with online sources. Combined, the review suggests that studies of L2 plagiarism in schools are needed, particularly studies where pupils are working with English language online sources. The paper reports on a study in which pupils aged 14-17 in Swedish secondary schools were interviewed about the use of source texts in an English lesson. Their teachers and High School teachers were also interviewed. A phenomenological analysis of the interviews revealed a mismatch between the teachers’ instructions, the pupils’ understanding of the instructions and the teachers’ interpretation of copying behaviour. The pupils’ opinions were mostly based on the pedagogical reasons given by their teachers to explain why they should not copy other people’s work, rather than on ideas related to the ownership of ideas. The teachers primarily understood the activities in terms of cheating and laziness.

From Hispana to Chicana: Lesbian to Queer or Torna-atrás

This biographical essay exams the personal identificatory markers used for a life lived across seven decades. It deploys various caste, racial, and ethnic labels following each era of personal growth or changing discernment. It historicizes categories, from my traditional New Mexican, “Hispanic” upbringing toward meaningful engagement with the subtleties of mixed-race ethnicity and LGBTQIT2 identity. Just as the racial markers have changed over time and became more complex, so have those pertaining to sexuality. The personal essay attempts to marry these journeys into a more unified effort to understand and historicize a nuevo mejicana’s Chicana lesbian historical experience in the United States.
