The main objective of this paper is to describe, from a historiographical point of view, the evolution of the different conceptualisations of the expression of taboo. In contrast to other authors who established two phases in its development – the first until the 1970s (based on semantic, lexicological, lexicographical and dialectological studies) and the second from this date to present –, in which both pragmatic-discursive and cognitive theoretical approaches coexisted, we propose, with greater historiographical accurateness, the existence of four stages in the evolution of the phenomenon: 1) classical studies on taboo as a psychological "cause" of semantic changes (from historical semantics to the beginnings of modern semantics); 2) the romanistic tradition on taboo and euphemism; 3) lexical and pragmatic-discursive approaches to the subject; and 4) recent approaches from a cognitive viewpoint.

Onomatopoeia is a fundamental expressive resource in comics that synthesizes text and image. Its main function is to represent inarticulate sounds foreign to language, such as animal voices. When dealing with extinct creatures without a sound record, such as dinosaurs and other Mesozoic fauna, onomatopoeia takes on a speculative dimension whose concreteness depends on the imagination of both the author and the reader. The most common technique is to use contemporary references, but there are also more personal works that have created their own universe.

The Politics of Antihero Aesthetics: Andy Warhol’s Thirteen Most Wanted Men at the 1964 World’s Fair
The current paper examines a series of portraits called Thirteen Most Wanted Men that the famous American Pop artist Andy Warhol created on the occasion of his participation in the World’s Fair that took place in New York in 1964. The paper explores the economic-political context of the 1964 World’s Fair and explains how and why Warhol’s work got it to the façade of the New York State Pavilion designed by the prominent American architect Philip Johnson. The paper reveals the ambiguous nature of the antihero representation of Thirteen Most Wanted Men and studies the contribution of one of Warhol's art dealers Ileana Sonnabend to the international circulation of these paintings in the aftermath of the 1964 World’s Fair.
In this conversation between Karleen Pendleton Jiménez and Isabel Millán, they reflect on their experiences as authors and their relationship spanning over a decade. As queer Chicanx authors and scholars, they share many of the same academic spaces and communities, such as MALCS and NACCS. In 2022, Millán published her first children’s picture book (Chabelita’s Heart/El corazón de Chabelita), whereas Pendleton Jiménez has been creating children’s literature since 1999. Her latest book for children is a middle-grade chapter book published in 2021 (The Street Belongs to Us). In what follows, they offer us a curated collection of their personal reflections and dialogues regarding their lives, their children’s books, and their visions for the future.
Ad Feminam: Martine Gutierrez and the Language of Advertising
Martine Gutierrez (b. Apr. 16, 1989, Berkeley, CA) is a Guatemalan American artist, a trans woman of Indigenous Maya descent, and the cover girl of artworks that pass as advertisements. At the age of thirty- four, her billboards, bus shelter ads, and fashion magazine spreads have caught the attention of major media outlets. Often branded as a “Latinx artist,” it is striking that the media never discusses Gutierrez in relation to other Latina/x artists. In this paper, I situate Gutierrez within a lineage of Latina/x and Chicana/x artist-activists, such as Ester Hernández (b. 1944, Dinuba, CA) and Patssi Valdez (b. 1951, East Los Angeles, CA). I draw on cultural theorists, such as Chela Sandoval, to consider how Gutierrez’s glamorous adaptations of mass media form part of an ongoing liberatory practice, one that uses art to combat the idealization of whiteness, critique gender norms, and call out systemic racism.
In this article, written as a tribute, the self-definition of Cristina Peri Rossi as a “writer of the imagination” is revealed in order to thus, through the concept of the postulated author, assume the complicit responsibility of imagining her –the author–, living in the literature. This takes place through the reading of three texts: “Tsunami” (2007), a story that supports an autobiographical reading; the explicitly autobiographical novel entitled La insumisa (2020); and, finally, the story “Estate violenta” (1980), apparently alien to the Uruguayan-Spanish writer's self but which, like the two previous cases, overlaps and combines fictions, among them those of an author who plays at being imagined.
This article stems from the concept of fusion text (Evans) and multimodal discourse in order to study the formal features of the book by Antonio Altarriba and Sergio García, Cuerpos del delito published in 2017. In this particular fusion text we can see different discursive levels, which have different ways of textual cohesion that demand, in turn, different ways of reading. The text is based on repetitions, symmetries and the use of tobacco as leitmotiv; on the graphic level, Sergio García puts into practice his theoretical ideas about multilinear narratives and container of stories. The singularity of this book comes from the idea that its components can be detachable but, in fact, are harmonically bound together in a complementary way in order not to produce redundant repetitions. Sergio García’s illustrations, that are embedded in Antonio Altarriba’s text, act as a bridge between the two discursive levels assuming a new structural function.
