Field Guide to Graphic Literature. Artists and Writers on Creating Graphic Narratives, Poetry Comics, and Literary Collage
Reseña de “Field Guide to Graphic Literature. Artists and Writers on Creating Graphic Narratives, Poetry Comics, and Literary Collage” de Kelcey Ervick y Tom Hart (eds.)
We present the experience on the didactic use of the comic book "Back to Eden" by Paco Roca developed by the Department of Geography and History of the IES Alonso Quijano (2020-2024). In this work, the author organizes the narrative around the conservation of a photograph, an object that opens the field to the reconstruction of family history. The analysis of the comic reveals Paco Roca's contribution to the treatment of family memories under Franco's regime. The comic serves the students as a historical source, and is a model for research work, based on the choice of a family object, which allows them to knot the memory transmitted with the knowledge provided by the academic study of history. Superhero Fiction and Vigilante Reality: Self-Referentiality and Quixotism in Millar and Romita Jr.’s Kick-Ass
In Millar and Romita Jr.’s Kick-Ass comics series, Dave is an ordinary kid in New who loves reading comics and discussing them with his friends. At home, his situation is not ideal: his mother has died due to a brain haemorrhage and his relationship with his father, James Lizewski, is strained due to unresolved mourning and poor communication. The situation in his immediate social context is, moreover, rather dire: Dave is a witness of daily injustice and crime, which often leads him to wonder why there are no costumed vigilantes in the real world. When Dave creates a double-identity as a masked vigilante and eventually ventures to the streets at night to fight crime, he relies on comic books such as Spider-Man as if they were instruction manuals on how to be a superhero, but reality immediately strikes back with brutal consequences. In a way, Kick-Ass is an ode to a comics genre, acknowledging is most salient plot features, its wacky characters and worlds, and its history as a medium. However, this complex web of self-referential elements also configures an interesting argument of why superhero stories are, precisely, stories, and why this kind of fictional narrative is incompatible with the real world. Therefore, the aim of this article is twofold: first, the discussion focuses on analysing how Kick-Ass identifies, highlights and emulates elements from the superhero and vigilante archetypes, to then focus on theories of self-referentiality which allow for a study of the critical commentary that the work makes of its own medium and genre. Finally, the discussion will turn towards the ideological dimension of the work, focusing on the extent of Kick-Ass’s cynical take on real-life superheroes, its terms, warnings, and optimism
A Transformational Figure: Optimus Prime in Popular Culture 2006-2018
Since the introduction of the Transformers franchise in 1984, the character of Optimus Prime has served as the leader of the heroic Autobot faction, but also as the “face” of the series in popular culture. This paper explores the character’s conceptual origins as a superhero robot, and takes an in-depth look at various representations of Optimus Prime in Transformers media during the pivotal years 2006-2018. Particular attention is paid to the various roles Prime serves in fiction, from idealistic journeyman to all-American action hero to war-weary veteran to wise mentor. The character’s status as a celebrity is also discussed
Always Rooting For The Antihero: A Dive Into The Evolution Of Taylor Swift's Poetic Persona
The aim of this paper is to analyze how Taylor Swift's public persona has evolved over the last years, from her beginnings in the music industry to her latest works. To do so, we have studied some of the lyrics of her songs with the objective of understanding the three phases Swift has gone through in the creation of her personal brand: damsel in distress, hero and anti-hero. We have examined how, in her first albums, Swift protrayed herself as a naïve, young, woman always hoping to be rescued by her prince. Later, we have delved into how she depicts herself as a hero, so we have analized the coincidences between Campbell's hero's journey and some of the tracks in the album "1989". Finally, we have focused on how, since 2017, Taylor Swifts embodies the anti-hero, reviewing the shared traits between Swift's public persona and these characters of questionable morality. To this end, we have used some theoretical tools such as textual analysis or Greimas' actantial scheme and we have considered some of the most relevant studies on damsels in distress, the hero and the anti-hero.

The main character of Un amor (One love), by Sara Mesa, leaves the city of Cárdenas and her work as a commercial translator to settle in a house located in a village belonging to the town of Petacas and translate theatrical plays. Her reasons for living there will look suspicious both to the people of that community and the readers of the novel. After some pretextual (previous works by the author and studies about it) paratextual (mainly the title and the cover of the book), keys to analyze, this work pretends to illuminate the construction of the characters and the places of the novel, mainly through Bachelard’s poetics of space, that delve into Nat’s memories, thoughts, and dreams, and therefore also into notions or coordinate of time. By analyzing the assemblage of characters and places, a distinctive trait of Mesa’s literature, we focus on the human constellation, which is divided in intruders and natives; all united, however, by escape respect other people and places. Thus, in addition to assessing the aspects that have made this novel an acclaimed work, we will search for interpretations of a blind but revealing love. Love seems to push towards the other but also, when it is love or hate, it can imply exclusion, by choice, especially within a system of apparently invisible economic and sexual powers.
This article proposes a comparative reading of two Spanish novels of contemporary medievalist fiction: La cuadratura del círculo (1999), by Álvaro Pombo, and La tierra fértil (1999), by Paloma Díaz-Mas. La cuadratura del círculo places us in 12th century France –and, more explicitly, in the context of the crusades that took place in those years– while closely following the life of a young man called Acardo. La tierra fértil, alternatively, moves the narrative to the setting of Catalonia in the second half of the 13th century –during the reigns of King James i and his son, King Peter ii– and follows the rise and fall of the lordship of the family of the young protagonist, Arnau Bonastre. The analysis of these two works of medievalist fiction aims to, on the one hand, identify the intertextual mechanisms and the literary and historiographical references that allow the authors to recreate the medieval setting and spirit in a truthful way. On the other hand, it also seeks to understand and interpret how this fictional universe is re-signified through the incorporation of new subjects and discourses that –in the light of contemporary paradigms– multiply the fictional possibilities of representing and thinking about the Middle Ages.
In tourism studies, nostalgia is often linked to the configuration of an image that, from the evocation of the traveller, motivates the desire and even the gaze of the tourists that will visit a specific place. This paper analyses how nostalgia is also expressed in the cultural practices that emerge in mature tourist destinations. After reflecting on the temporal articulation of nostalgia and its implication in the creation of affective communities, nostalgic evocation procedures are studied in seven collections of poems published in the Balearic and Canary Islands between 2015 and 2021. We study how the so-called in Spain “tourist boom” marks a symbolic border in the physical occupation of space and its transformation. The above is perceived from an idealized point of view and remembered with a feeling of loss. This, however, does not prevent the creation of new cultural forms, which emerge from diverse formulas of hybridization. In the poems, two complementary procedures of nostalgic evocation are detected. The first one refers to the pain for the natural or cultural environment that the tourist industry has destroyed, in whose analysis the adequacy of using the concept of solastalgia is assessed. Secondly, a more innovative procedure analysed refer to the incorporation in the poetic imaginary of references to the experience of the resident in tourist environments. This strategy motivates a reflection on the complex and heterogeneous legacy of cultures affected by touristization processes.
