    Get PDF
In February 2022, the Russian-Ukrainian war broke out and, since its beginning, more than 270,000 Ukrainian people have fled to Spain, in need of housing, work and learning Spanish. In this context, different initiatives for teaching Spanish as a host language have arisen, such as Project U, which is described in this paper. Since most of the volunteer teachers in Project U had neither previous training nor work experience related to the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, a specific training was designed, the FD-U, which consisted of webinars designed to provide basic content for the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, as well as a pre-post evaluation instrument to evaluate this intervention. This article reports the experience in Project U, the creation of the FD-U, as well as the research results collected with the instrument designed.

The Franchise Devouring Itself: A Critical Analysis of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Reflexive Turn

    No full text
This article proposes that a "reflexive turn," which is particularly visible in some of the MCU's new streaming series, has taken place with the beginning of the franchise's Phase Four, the first phase of the new Multiverse Saga. Taking the first seasons of She-Hulk, What If...?, WandaVision and Loki as illustrations, my analytic focus falls on the reflexive devices and the narrative structures of these four series, which together seem to have established the grounds for a recurring metafictional allegory whereby the diegetic multiverse is made analogous to the franchise's own "multiverse" of complexly interrelated narratives. Thus seen, my interpretation of each of the series pays special attention to how reflexivity has allowed the MCU to speak about itself in this transitional moment, in a way that ambivalently reflects not only about the franchise's continuing dominance within the contemporary culture industry, but also about fears and concerns that the franchise's power may not last very long if it loses its narrative coherence along the way. It is in this sense that the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to have started devouring itself, turning into a kind of "narcissistic" and "autophagic" narrative precisely at the time when it is beginning to generate a sense of exhaustion and saturation among its fans and followers. Although the reflexive elements of these four series acknowledge this sentiment in ways that approximate self-parody and self-critique, in the end they all arrive at the cynical and/or conformist conclusion that, for better or for worse, there is no alternative to the franchise's planned continuation

Determinación de asociaciones léxicas. Evaluación de tres métodos

    No full text
Several procedures have been proposed to discover and measure lexical associations in lexical availability surveys. In this paper we evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of three methods to discover lexical associations: Dispograph (Echeverría et al. 2008), weighted distance index (WDI) (author 2008) and vocabulary contiguity index (VCI) (Guerra Salas, Gómez Sánchez and Basterrechea Salido 2015). Dispograph is limited because it does not take into account the relative frequency of the word nor does it normalize the results to a scale. ICV takes into account the frequency of the vocabularies, but does not normalize to a scale. IDP takes into account both vowel frequency and normalization to a scale.

Latinø Children and Their Picturebooks Over Time

Latinø children’s literature scholars point to the early 1990s as a crucial time in the history of US children’s literature by and about Latinøs, rightly claiming that up to this time, such books presented miniscule publication rates and received limited mainstream attention (Koss et al.; Naidoo “Opening doors”; Nilsson). In some cases, books with Latinø themes presented highly problematic racioethnic representations in both their verbal (written) and visual narratives, particularly when created by non-Latinøs (Quiroa, “Promising Portals”). These trends continued beyond the 1990s until more recently when shifts in the larger field of US multicultural literature by and about diverse racial and ethnic groups occurred1. The history of children’s literature by and about Latinøs in the U.S. is not as robust as that afforded mainstream and European literature, and deserves periodic documentation that equally takes into account their verbal (written) and visual (illustrations) narratives. Therefore, I provide a historical review of related, extant scholarship and book titles of this body of books, specifically focusing on those in picturebook formats. A central tenet for my work is that their visual narratives have received too little consideration from an interdisciplinary approach, including the fields of a) education (English language arts, biliteracy, and social studies); b) librarianship, c) ethnic/cultural studies, d) Spanish language and literature studies, e) semiotics, and d) art. Thus, an interdisciplinary approach can broaden understandings of how Latinø children and their narratives are portrayed in their picturebooks today2.

In today’s Hispanic narrative, a presence of photography is observed in intermedial works that propose original ways of conveying the past of the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorships on both sides of the Atlantic. Diario de una princesa montonera. 110% Verdad (2016) by Mariana Eva Perez, and Honrarás a tu padre y a tu madre (2018) by Cristina Fallarás are written from the perspective of the daughter and granddaughter, respectively, marked by the family legacy of the trauma of dictatorial violence. Both authors rescue stories that have had little visibility through the creative appropriation of a series of photographs from the family album that provide a documentary and intimate dimension to their accounts. This article analyzes how the intermediality or the dialogue between the verbal and the visual in these novels promotes a filiative revision of the past, which evokes the absent, undermining the linearity and reliability of the testimonial narrative. Thus, the comparative study of the works by Perez and Fallarás explores the ways in which the interaction of photographs with verbal discourse brings the novel closer to non-fiction and provides a multiplicity of meanings to the photographic image. A close reading of Diario and Honrarás also seeks to answer what are the differences that characterize the memory discourse of the descendants of the disappeared in the Spanish and Argentine contexts.
