¿Qué es el español neutro?
The concept of neutral Spanish continues to provoke controversy in the field of studies that focus on the behavior and nature of Spanish as a global, diverse, homogeneous and wide-ranging language in terms of its vitality and demography. Despite a succession of opinions for and against such a linguistic reality, no satisfactory definition and characterization has been reached. Progress has been made in the what for or why of such a linguistic entity, but hardly in the what, therefore, little or inadequately in its theoretical delimitation. In this paper we intend, on the basis of studies which, in our opinion, provide the key to favor such a pretension, to place Neutral Spanish in the framework of the linguistic diasystem of Spanish, outlining some basic guidelines which place it in its precise place in the general organization chart of Spanish.

Goncharov: A Self-Aware Queer Mirror on Tumblr
Packed with homoeroticism and symbolism, Goncharov is a mafia movie from 1973 about the rivalry between a Russian mob and the Italian mafia in Naples. However, Goncharov is unlike any other production by Scorsese, since it is a fabrication by Tumblr. In a community effort which began on November 18th, 2022, thousands of Tumblr users convincingly conceived the plot and the characters of Goncharov, adapting the conventions and stereotypes from its supposed genre. Nevertheless, Goncharov is also quintessentially Tumblr, which the presence of fandom and the queer readings of the movie give away. From the tenets of cognitive linguistics and the tools of Text World Theory, this paper attempts to unravel the cultural knowledge and assumptions underlying Goncharov, focusing particularly on its reflection of LGBTQ+ representation in films. A corpus of 150 Tumblr posts has been manually analyzed to identify the mental frames and cognitive blocks which the content of the said posts activates. The results reveal the coalescence of the past and the present of LGBTQ+ characters in TV shows and movies, perhaps influenced by the noticeable presence of the LGBTQ+ community on Tumblr

In this article we develop a description of the Compound Past of Central Peninsular Spanish, exploring its semantics and paying attention to how aspectual, temporal and evidential interpretations are derived from it. Our description is formulated considering that the semantics of verb tenses, including the Compound Past, is procedural. A basic characteristic of procedural meaning is its rigidity. This, however, does not prevent the Compound Past from being contextually enriched, leading to a potentially wide range of interpretations. On the other hand, competition mechanisms between semantically close expressions operate in the language, and this has an impact on inter- and intralinguistic variation. Thus, in Spanish (and in Romance languages in general) there is competition between the Simple the Compound Past forms, so that each tense tends to specialise in certain types of interpretation, which may differ not only in different languages, but also in different varieties of the same language. Some interpretations of the Compound Past are related to the notion of evidentiality. This will be given special attention in the last part of the article.
Tristicruel (2014), by Domingo Michelli, uses the non-realist literature genres to explore the complex socio-political context of Venezuela. This collection of short stories shows a variety of discourses and genres (including magical realism, the fantastic, the grotesc, etc.). Each story is self-contained, but they are all connected through an aesthetic project and through the style of the author. In this book, we find three short stories that can be read as science-fiction. “Todos, todicos, todos” represents a Venezuela where a natural disaster has forced a part of the population to live in shelters that will eventually become small versions of the Venezuelan society; in “Carruseles”, cars are replace by an automatic system of transport created to solve the capital’s traffic problems; and “Presovisión” narrates the raising of the inmates of a prison that takes the country to the edge of collapse. These short stories explore through speculative fiction, humor and imaginary taken from the grotesque (following Michael Bajtin’s terminology) how the promise of progress, associated with technology and scientific advance, fails in Venezuela. In this article it will be analyzed how this is accomplished.
The music composed by José Luis Turina de Santos (Madrid, 1952) has been regarded as a notable example of Spanish musical postmodernism due to its eclecticism, tending toward re-readings of musical past, and the integration of technically and poetically heterogeneous elements into an ironic depiction of the musical canon, which it revisits. Turina’s works update meanings aroused centuries ago by means of quotation and meta-music, and prove to follow traditional devices, such as topics, to preserve the communication to the audience.
This paper aims to analyze three works that share this perspective, showing evident intertextual implications through the Topic Theory. More precisely, the Fantasia is examined as a postmodern topic in his music, as it serves to redefine his dialogue with the past through an eclectic idiom conveyed as intellectual game. Thus, Fantasia on ‘Don Giovanni’, for 4 hands piano (1981), and the orchestral Fantasia on a Fantasia by Alonso de Mudarra (1989), and Fantasia on Twelve notes (1994) are analyzed. They respectively refer to the classical Mozart’s homonymous opera, a Renaissance harp piece, and both the Second Viennese School technique and the author’s grandfather, Joaquín Turina —also an acknowledge composer, and an Andalucian Falla’s generational mate. In these dialogical compositions, a triple creative turn is verified (of genre, timbre and style) that adds new meanings to the originals. By emphasizing how the topic of fantasia impacts their meaning, it is explained how a postmodern sensibility can be detected behind the compositional strategies that articulate these recent pieces.
