Associations Between Older Hispanics’ Diabetes Control and Their Caregiver’s Health Literacy
Background: Older Spanish-speaking Hispanics are a rapidly growing population in the United States that face disproportionally high rates of diabetes and inadequate health literacy. Familism is valued among Hispanics and caregivers may play an important role in overcoming the social determinants of health facing this vulnerable population. Methods: This descriptive correlation study sought to explore correlations between the caregiver’s health literacy and the patient’s control of diabetes. Findings: Mixed effects model found a significant correlation between the caregiver’s print literacy and the patient’s hemoglobin A1c. Conclusion: The findings are encouraging for future research to explore interventions that target the caregivers in order to improve the health of the patient
Quantity Over Quality? What Pupil Dilations Tell Us About Cognitive Effort At Learning.
The current study examined whether pupil dilations at encoding reflect cognitive effort participants engage in a task. According to the cognitive effort hypothesis of pupil dilations, increases in cognitive effort cause activation of the locus coeruleus–norepinephrine (LC-NE) system, which is reflected in larger pupil dilations. While task-evoked pupillary responses (TEPRs) have been used as a marker of cognitive effort, it remains unclear whether changes in pupil size reflect encoding success. We proposed that the reason for conflicting findings on the topic is a lack of nuance in examining cognitive effort. Specifically, we suggested that cognitive effort consists of two separate processes: quantity and quality. While quantity refers to the amount of mental processing devoted to a task, quality reflects the effectiveness and thoughtfulness of the processing utilized. Across two experiments, we utilized levels of processing (quality) and forward and backward spelling (quantity) to investigate how the quality and quantity of cognitive effort affect pupil dilations at encoding and their relationship to subsequent memory. Our results showed that a) quality and quantity are two separate processes of cognitive effort, b) pupil dilations are sensitive to the quantity, but not quality of encoding effort, and c) pupillary responses do not track subsequent memory differences between varying levels of quantity and quality of cognitive effort. The results of this study suggest that while pupil dilations reflect the amount of cognitive effort, they may not fully capture the effectiveness of encoding processes. Additionally, our findings highlight the complexity of encoding processes and suggest the need for further research into the dissociation between quantity and quality of cognitive effort in memory formation
SCALABLE APPROACHES TOWARDS CHARACTERIZING AND MITIGATING EMERGING PHISHING SCAMS
Phishing scams are among the most dangerous and persistent forms of cybercrime, leveraging social engineering to exploit human behavior and obtain sensitive information, leading to widespread identity theft and data breaches. In the past year, these attacks have resulted in financial losses exceeding $10 billion in the United States alone. As phishing scams continue to evolve, they have not only expanded in scale but also grown in sophistication, spreading rapidly across social media and employing adversarial techniques to evade detection by anti-scam tools. The situation is further exacerbated by the availability of advanced phishing kits, and more recently, generative AI, which significantly lowers the barrier for attackers to create and launch these scams. Despite ongoing efforts by phishing blocklists, security tools, and domain registrars, their defenses often fall short against more evasive threats. Meanwhile, outdated cybersecurity training and insufficient browser warnings leave users underprepared to recognize and respond to these attacks effectively.
To address these challenges, this dissertation focuses on characterizing evasive phishing threats across both centralized and decentralized platforms and developing real-time, scalable frameworks to proactively detect and mitigate these scams before they can reach end-users. To achieve this, this work develops six open-source frameworks - Social ThreatFinder, FreePhish, PhishLang, ScamLLM, DarkGram, and PhishXplain, which demonstrate the feasibility of real-time solutions that: 1)Curate reliable threat intelligence from social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Telegram, to enhance blocklisting, particularly for zero-day threats, 2)Identify and prevent the abuse of commercial platforms (e.g., free website builders, and social media sites) and AI chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT, and Claude) for generating and distributing evasive phishing scams, and 3) Expedite zero-day threat detection and provide users with contextual phishing warnings, helping them recognize key scam indicators and improving their overall security awareness
Social Workers Addressing the Needs of Visually Impaired Residents of Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities
Objective: This qualitative study investigates social workers’ perception of their preparedness and confidence in their ability to address the needs of the population of visually impaired residents of nursing home and assisted living facilities. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven participants with experience in long term care, to explore how social workers viewed their work with visual impaired residents. Data were analyzed using the RaDaR method. Results: The following themes emerged from the data analysis: Challenges for Residents and Staff, the Importance of Experience, and Resources. Discussion: Participants indicated that they were currently confident in serving their visually impaired residents and expressed a need for additional vision-specific resources. Findings suggest the need for further investigation of social workers’ methods of working with visually impaired long-term care residents as well as investigation of social workers’ pre-professional and continuing education needs in the area of visual impairment
Resveratrol Exerts Anti-Inflammatory Effects on Human THP-1 Macrophages
Inflammation is a natural biological response to harmful stimuli. It initiates a series of reactions that prompt defensive and curative mechanisms, ridding the body of offending agents and healing remaining injuries. Inflammation involves the intricate communication between cells, requiring complex signaling that mediates various pathways. This acute form of inflammation is vital for our survival, promoting a myriad of mechanisms that function to defend and heal. However, if this inflammatory response is not resolved, it results in a prolonged condition referred to as chronic inflammation. This persistent inflammatory state is incredibly harmful, damaging the host\u27s healthy cells, tissues, and organs. When left unchecked, chronic inflammation can contribute to several illnesses, making it a primary therapeutic target for treatment. Resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in plants, has been previously studied for its potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In this study, we investigated the effect of resveratrol on pro-inflammatory cytokines, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and other vital mediators of the immune response (NF-κB subunits). Resveratrol displayed a notable trend in a dose-dependent fashion, decreasing the production of known proinflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNFα as well as reducing nitric oxide (a type of ROS) levels. Chapter 1 gives a brief overview of immunity, vital signaling pathways, key cells of the immune system, and a general description of resveratrol to generate a greater understanding of the research conducted. Chapter 2 illustrates the effects resveratrol has on several proinflammatory mediators, providing further evidence of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
