    Navigating Compliance: How Wage Theft Influences WARN Act Decisions

    Economic theory suggests that firms comply with regulations when the expected costs of noncompliance outweigh the expected benefits (Becker 1968). Despite minimal enforcement, weak penalties, and strong incentives for noncompliance, some firms comply with the provisions of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which mandates advance notice of mass layoffs and plant closings. Using a sample of 7,084 firm-years necessitating WARN Act disclosures from 2000 to 2020, I reassess the cost-benefit calculus by first demonstrating that wage theft violations provide the incentives necessary to compel firms to comply with other minimally enforced laws like WARN. Next, I find that firms with either prior wage theft violations or a high likelihood of future infractions are more likely to issue WARN notices, consistent with firms reassessing their compliance decisions as their violation profile changes in anticipation of future wage theft. Furthermore, the role of legal expertise in this decision-making process is nuanced: while firms with prominent general counsel are, on average, less likely to comply with the WARN Act, this relationship reverses when prior wage violations or high likelihood of future infractions exist, suggesting that legal expertise can act as a mitigation mechanism in the presence of heightened regulatory exposure. These findings present novel evidence on the interactive effect of regulations and how reputational effects can serve as an indirect cost of non-compliance for regulations that prima facie are weakly enforced. My research also highlights the critical role of legal counsel in shaping adherence to minimally enforced labor regulations that have meaningful consequences for workers

    GRAPHENE-POLYMER NANOCOMPOSITE FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE SHIELDING

    Polymers have widespread usage in most industries, such as aerospace, automotive, telecommunications, and medicine, mainly because they have a positive lightweight nature and excellent mechanical properties. One significant advantage of polymeric materials is their ability to combine nano-fillers, greatly enhancing their mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In the category of polymer matrices, polypropylene (PP) is notable for its low cost, ease of processing, and balanced mechanical properties. However, its relatively lower modulus and strength limit their applications in high-performance engineering. This research explores the addition of graphene into polypropylene to improve its mechanical properties and establish a conductive network for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Graphene, a two-dimensional material with excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties, is a promising nano-filler material for polymer composites. The incorporation of graphene in polypropylene is being pursued to achieve improved load-carrying capability and electrical conductivity. The polymer composites are synthesized in a twin-screw extruder so that graphene dispersion is uniform. Composites from the extruder are extruded into filaments and, subsequently, compressed-molded into planar samples for EMI shielding evaluation. Mechanical and electrical properties are analyzed by tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and electrical conductivity tests. The findings indicate that graphene-polypropylene (G-PP) nanocomposites have improved mechanical strength, thermal stability, and effective EMI shielding. These composite materials have excellent potential to be used in the aerospace and automotive industries, as well as for the protective casings of electronic equipment. The ability to control the electrical and mechanical characteristics of polypropylene by graphene addition presents an appealing opportunity to develop next-generation, high-performance, lightweight polymeric materials

    IMPACT OF GLUFOSINATE ON SOIL MICROBIAL COMMUNITY DYNAMICS

    The increasing global regulations of glyphosate due to its possible carcinogenicity and environmental hazards have necessitated the search for alternative herbicides. Glufosinate-ammonium offers a sustainable attribute due to its low toxicity and limited reported herbicide resistance cases. Despite its increasing agricultural importance, very limited studies are done on its environmental impact, especially on the soil systems. This thesis examines the ecological behavior of glufosinate in soil, precisely focusing on its effect on the dynamics of soil microbiome and the potential use of Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA110 for bioremediation by reversing the effect of microbial dysbiosis. A series of 30-day mesocosm studies were performed using different concentrations of glufosinate (43 and 86 fl. oz./A) to assess its impact on microbial diversity and pesticide degradation. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing shows a dose-dependent shift in soil microbiome towards glufosinate-tolerant taxa, notably Firmicutes, along with decreased species richness and evenness. Residual glufosinate measurement shows faster reduction in the two-time treatment group. This result complements the study from the metagenomics, suggesting adaptive enrichment of species, such as Bacillus and Pseudomonas, that are well known for glufosinate degradation. Weighted Gene Co-Expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) and co-occurrence network modeling show Pseudomonas, Hyphomicrobium, and Streptomyces as significant genera potentially contributing to accelerated glufosinate degradation. A parallel experiment suggests the bioremediation capabilities of B. japonicum USDA110 in the presence of glufosinate. Additionally, a comparative study was performed to see the effect of microbial activity on glufosinate reduction in soil by autoclaving soil. The results indicate improved glufosinate degradation and microbial stability in the soil inoculated with the bacteria. Furthermore, inoculation helped with the preservation of phylogenetic diversity and Proteobacteria abundance. This suggests improved stability and partial reversal of glufosinate-induced microbial dysbiosis
