Venus between times: from archaeological speculation to critical fabulation

This article draws a parallel between the construction of the image of the prehistoric Venus of Willendorf and the modern Venus of Hottentot, exploring possible reinterpretations and reworkings shaped by feminist epistemological shifts in Archaeology and Visual Arts. In this sense, it brings these two fields of knowledge closer by proposing an archaeology of images through speculations, fabulations, and traces that revisit the past and its archives with new questions, emerging from alternative subjects and perspectives. The critical gaze directed at the past, in seeking to break with certain entrenched structures, also highlights the power associated with controlling discourse and the historical continuity that reaffirms present-day norms. How was not human society – acknowledging its diversity – constructed, but rather the consolidation of certain modern and contemporary structures and relations? How does controlling the discourse about the past serve as a tool for domination in the present? And how can mechanisms be created to challenge these dominant structures? This article draws a parallel between the construction of the image of the prehistoric Venus of Willendorf and the modern Venus of Hottentot, exploring possible reinterpretations and reworkings shaped by feminist epistemological shifts in Archaeology and Visual Arts. Full text link
The lack of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) education in the educational system, especially in Peru and Latin America, limits students’ development in the digital age and faces challenges in its integration into university curricula, despite international recommendations. This quantitative, explanatory, and cross-sectional study investigated the incidence of MIL among 906 students from a public university, using the AMI-Perú-2023 survey, validated by experts. Four key dimensions of MIL were identified, supported by participants’ self-perception and statistical validation. Correlations were found between MIL levels and socio-formative factors such as cohabitation, Internet use, and career choice. Students who lived alone, depended on the computer for information, and limited their online time exhibited higher MIL levels. Additionally, using the Internet for academic activities was associated with a high level of MIL. Students in Basic Sciences, Engineering, and Biomedicine showed higher MIL levels compared to those in Social Sciences. These findings highlight the importance of integrating MIL into higher education to improve academic motivation and student engagement, preparing them for the challenges of the digital environment. The lack of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) education in the educational system, especially in Peru and Latin America, limits students’ development in the digital age and faces challenges in its integration into university curricula, despite international recommendations. Full text link
Digital culture is at the centre of the current moment and digital citizenship is developing within it. In this context, certain patterns of behaviour are established that define certain actions of network users. Specifically, in the educational context of the Peruvian jungle area, a descriptive non-experimental design study has been carried out to obtain information on the self-perception of teachers regarding digital culture and attitudes when interacting on social networks. From the data, key aspects are inferred that ratify the need for literacy among network users for them to empower themselves and develop positive attitudes. Behaviours that favour digital coexistence, for which we reflect on international research that deals with protecting the rights of digital citizens and designing strategies to empower them. For all these reasons, different training strategies are proposed based on the development of digital competence. At the same time, further research in the line initiated and the establishment of framework documents that collect the different casuistry is valued. The aim is to provide citizens with resources that enable them to communicate and interact in a responsible, participatory and ethical manner. The aim is to empower users so that they become a key springboard for digital-presential coexistence.Digital culture is at the centre of the current moment and digital citizenship is developing within it. Phygital Art: taxonomy and analysis of hybrid dimensions in contemporary aesthetic experience

This article examines the integration of physical and digital elements in contemporary artistic expression, introducing the term phygital art, derived from the concept of phygital. This term describes hybrid experiences that combine tangible and virtual components. Phygital art represents a collaborative fusion between the physical (phy-) and digital (-gital), wherein both components mutually influence one another, enabling new forms of artistic expression and audience engagement. To analyze these dynamics, a taxonomy is proposed, comprising six main categories: physical-digital integration, audience engagement, interactivity, bodily involvement, sensory experience, and conceptual depth. This framework provides a comprehensive evaluation of the diverse facets of the phygital experience, grounded in theories from authors such as Manovich, Grau, Dewey, and Veiga, among others. To test the robustness and validity of this taxonomy, it was applied to three representative works: Rain Room, The Treachery of Sanctuary, and Unnumbered Sparks. These works were analyzed comparatively, highlighting their unique positions within the phygital spectrum. The application of this taxonomic model proved effective in identifying the balance between physical and digital components and assessing audience involvement on multiple levels. A classification table and radar chart provide a clear visualization of each work’s position, illustrating their varied approaches. The flexibility of this taxonomy establishes it as a valuable tool for analyzing and understanding phygital art, supporting innovation and interactivity in a context where the tangible and virtual increasingly converge in complex and meaningful ways. This article examines the integration of physical and digital elements in contemporary artistic expression, introducing the term phygital art, derived from the concept of phygital. Full text link
This article explores the impact of Digital Media Art as a tool for fostering reflection on gender norms associated with female identity, based on an analysis of the creative process resulting from the author’s project. Through an interdisciplinary artistic practice grounded in Artivism, to highlight female empowerment in historical narratives. For that purpose, it presents and analyses the creative process and performance of the artistic artefact “female in/visibilities 1.0”, following the a/r/cographic method, supported by ethnographic research and qualitative methodological approaches. The experimental practice reflects on the technological convergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in the image-making and interactive creation as artivist mediation. It emphasizes the role of the interface in engaging the participating spectator and illustrates how narrative subversion can be used as a tool to promote the empowered visibility of female identity. It aligns with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the principles of the New European Bauhaus initiative, aiming to contribute to emerging practices of expression committed to the Sustainable Development Goals. This article explores the impact of Digital Media Art as a tool for fostering reflection on gender norms associated with female identity, based on an analysis of the creative process resulting from the author’s project. Problems of Interaction of Language and Culture in the Context of Intercultural Communication

The relevance of the issues presented in the work is due to the serious activation of the processes of intercultural communication as a dialogue of cultures. This is mainly due to the global, very rapid process of globalisation by the standards of human history, but also to the problems, challenges and questions that have been raised in the public debate since several countries gained their independence, particularly in the last century. The research examines the interaction between language and culture in intercultural communication, focusing on the formation of a multilingual community in Kazakhstan. The research employs theoretical methods, including inductive, deductive, axiomatic, and comparative approaches, to address the central problem. This paper describes the problems of interaction between language and culture in the context of intercultural communication as a dialogue of cultures, using the multilingual environment of Kazakhstan as an example. Key findings include the identification of language as the primary communicative function of humanity, the exploration of linguistic functions beyond communication such as conceptual and accumulative, and the analysis of the relationship between language use and the structure of human consciousness. Furthermore, the study discusses the role of culturally marked individual units in communicative processes, the historical background embedded in linguistic units, and the impact of language on identifying civilizational groupings. The research also provides a detailed account of linguoculturology as a new interdisciplinary field and highlights Kazakhstan as a successful case of intercultural dialogue. The materials of this article can be useful to philologists, philosophers, cultural scientists, political scientists, university teachers, and students, as well as to a wide range of interested readers

BioFlux: Collective Memory as Generative Video Art through Deconstructed Biographical Narratives

BioFlux is a video artwork that employs generative techniques to explore and deconstruct documental biographical narratives. The piece is derived from personal interviews, which are woven into a seamless and dynamic stream of human experiences, thereby transporting them into parallel worlds where different outcomes and plot lines may (or may not) come to fruition, based on three pillars: place, person, and memory. By harnessing a generative art approach, BioFlux disassembles individual stories, reconfiguring and intertwining them into a fluid, ever-evolving narrative tapestry. The resulting composition is a living, breathing video flux that transcends traditional storytelling, offering viewers a contemplative and surreal – yet profoundly human – journey through identity’s multifaceted and interconnected nature. BioFlux invites the audience to reflect on the complexity of personal histories and the shared threads that bind us all, revealing the profound interdependencies within our collective narrative.

Developing Students’ Digital Literacy with Digital Storytelling Projects in Design and Media Arts

Digital media literacy is essential in today’s world, where media in the form of interfaces, images, words, and sounds is omnipresent. Within this context, educators are tasked with equipping students with the ability to critically analyse and effectively create digital content. This paper explores the role of digital storytelling projects in fostering digital literacy among students, particularly in design and media art disciplines. Grounded in design-based research, the study highlights key pedagogical strategies like project-based learning to support the development of students’ skills, like critical thinking, creative communication, collaboration, networking, and technological proficiency. We propose a digital storytelling project framework for professors and students to convey personal experiences, engage with complex issues, and develop a deeper understanding of the media they consume, share, and produce. The framework includes guidelines to set the learning environment and to support several phases of student’s projects, from initial ideation to online sharing. We present a literature review to scaffold the proposed framework and case studies of different kinds of personal stories created by students using diverse media formats like video, interactive video prototypes, and virtual and augmented reality projects. We highlight several positive outcomes of the framework including resilience and sustainability, as it has been used in several different classes and could be implemented within different modalities
