    Antibiogram of Escherichia coli isolated from semi-closed system farmed Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea)

    In the present study, antibiogram of Escherichia coli isolated from farmed Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea was characterised. Asian clam or locally known as ‘etak’ is processed to became smoked clam and consumed as snack by Kelantanese. However, there are many diarrhoea cases after consuming smoked clam. Furthermore, there are also insufficient information about the E.coli level in Asian clam farm and effective antibiotic in controlling the bacteria in the litereature. Hence, this study was carried out to provide information of antibiogram of E.coli to be reference in the future. Eosin Methylene Blue agar (EMB) was used to isolate E. coli. A total of 100 isolated bacteria were subjected to antibiotic sensitivity test using disk diffusion method. A total of 18 types of antibiotics namely novobiocin (30µg/disk), fosfomycin (50 µg/disk), tetracycline (30µg/disk), lincomycin (15µg/disk), flumequine (30µg/disk), sulphamethoxazole (25 µg/disk), amoxycillin (25 µg/disk), chloramphenicol (30 µg/disk), oleandomycin (15 µg/disk), spiramycin (100 µg/disk), ampicillin (10 µg/disk), oxytetracycline (30 µg/disk), doxycycline (30 µg/disk), nalidixic acid (30 µg/disk), florfenicol (30 µg/disk), erythromycin (15 µg/disk), kanamycin (30 µg/disk) and oxolinic acid (2 µg/disk). The findings of the present study showed total plate count of E. coli was 6.45 x 103 colony forming unit (CFU/100g) of sampled Asian clam. Hence, the clam is needed to be under cleansing treatment before can consider safe for human consumption. Antibiotic results showed 51 % was recorded as antibiotic resistance case, 44 % antibiotic sensitive case and 5 % as antibiotic intermediary sensitive case. None of the tested antibiotics was successfully inhibited the growth of the present bacterial isolates indicating more antibiotics are needed to be screen in the future study to find out the most effective antibiotic in controlling isolated E. coli

    Combined Effects of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Maize for Sustainable Food Supply in Semi-Arid, Nigeria

    Biomass transfer using fertiliser tree species is a more sustainable means for maintaining nutrient balances in maize based production systems. This research investigated the combined effects of incorporation of leafy biomass of fertilizer trees as organic fertilizer and urea as inorganic fertiliser for sustainable food production viz-a-viz maize-based crop in semi-arid, Nigeria. The experiment was laid out as 3 x 4 x 2 factorial in a split-split plot design with three replicates. Data were analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at p =.05. Albizia lebbeck amended plots consistently had significantly higher values in 2014, 2015 and combined means (12.8 kg ha-1, 13 kg ha-1, 12.9 kg ha1) of cob length, (345.8 kg ha-1, 311.8 kg ha-1, 328.8 kg ha-1) of grains per cob and grain yield (2097.3 kg ha-1, 1667.7 kg ha-1, 1881.9 kg ha-1) throughout the cropping seasons and combinedeffect respectively compared to Parkia biglobosa. Positive significant correlation was experienced between the growth and yield components. Inclusion of nitrogen fertilizer and fertilizer trees improved the production of these maize varieties compared to control. It is therefore concluded that incorporation of Albizia lebbeck with up to 40 kg N ha-1 rate of nitrogen fertilizer into the soilimproved its quality for better yield of both 2009 EVAT and DMR-ESR-7 maize varieties

    Floristic composition, diversity and structure of Khaya senegalensis stands in Benue Department, Cameroon

    The present work has been done to provide basic data for a better conservation and valorization of Khaya senegalensis stands in Sudano-Sahelian zone of Cameroon. A 100 m x 50 m transect method was undertaken to measure floristic diversity through the use of species richness, Shannon index, Pielou equitability, Simpson index, importance value index and importance value family. The vegetation structure is determined by density, basal area and biovolume. The inventory included trees with a dbh ?10 cm on an area of 1 ha per plot. A total of 6743 individuals distributed in 24 families, 33 genera and 54 species were inventoried in all Khaya senegalensis stands studied. Statistical analysis showed significant differences, Shannon index, Simpson index, Pielou equitability, density, basal area, biovolume, species richness, heights class, diameters class, circumferences class but does not certify a significant difference of importance value index among in the villages. The undergrowth of Khaya senegalensis stands is more diverse at Bamé with a Shannon diversity index (ISH=5.87 ± 0.12 bit). The greatest of Pielou equitability is observed at Bamé (EQ=0.80 ± 0.01). The largest of Simpson index is recorded at Bamé (D=0.098 ± 0.001). Khaya senegalensis Stands are denser at Bamé (194 ± 3.12 individuals/ha). The basal area and biovolume of Khaya senegalensis stands are very high at Bamé (BA=25.87 ± 0.06 m2/ha and Biovolume =15.32 ± 0.012 m3/ha). The species importance value is maximal in all the studied villages (SIV=300 ± 71.45). The importance value index of species revealed a clear dominance in the undergrowth of Khaya senegalensis stands are Combretum adenogonium; Acacia senegal; Terminalia laxiflora; Guiera senegalensis; Acacia nilotica; Entada Africana. The vertical structure has three aspects, like the L (Dbh), asymmetric (height) and dissymmetrical (circumference) structures attesting to a strong regeneration of the understory ligneous woods of Khaya senegalensis stands studied

    Effect of extender supplemented with date palm pollen grain on bovine semen qualities

    Natural extract from plant-based has grown in popularity as protective properties in extender for preserving animal semen. Date palm pollen grain (DPPG) is commercially used for male fertility by enhancing sperm count, motility and DNA quality because DPPG contains flavonoids. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of a) extender supplementation with different concentration of DPPG on sperm motility, viability and membrane integrity b) different preservation storage of chilled and frozen bovine semen after seven days. The semen was collected through electrical stimulation and assigned to four treatment groups. The semen were diluted in Tris citric fructose egg yolk (TCFY) diluent (control group; CG) or supplemented with DPPG with different concentration (G1 = 2%, G2 = 4% and G3 = 6% in 20 mg DPPG/40 mL of Tris citric fructose (TCF). Semen samples were chilled (experiment 1) in the refrigerator (4°C) for seven days and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen (experiment 2) prior to dilution to four treatments. The samples were thawed in a water bath (37 °C) and analysed for motility, membrane integrity and viability by conventional laboratory methods. No significant difference was observed among treatment groups in experiment 1. However, in the second experiment, the addition of 6% DPPG resulted significantly higher (p<0.05) in sperm viability compared to control groups (71.25±1.04) vs (56.47±4.69). The supplementation of 6% DPPG showed the ability to protect the viability of bovine sperm, respectively

    Heat impact on total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of Malaysian Tualang and Kelulut honey

    The effect of temperature at 50°C, 70°C and 100°C for up to 120 min on the content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of Tualang honey and Kelulut honey was studied. Unheated honey samples for both varieties were used as control. The total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were examined using Folin-Ciocalteau and DPPH assays, respectively. Both honeys vary widely in the total phenolic content as well as antioxidant activity upon heating and time of heating. The total phenolic content in both honeys showed fluctuations at all temperatures throughout 120 min. In comparison to controls for both honeys, heating at 100°C for 10 min demonstrated a drop in total phenolic content in Tualang honey (13%) and Kelulut honey (29%), but the antioxidant activity increased 29% and 57% in Tualang and Kelulut honey, respectively. The study generates information on the characteristics of components in both honeys which react differently to heat and time of heating, therefore this will help the honey manufacturers or public to optimize the processing protocols and later to preserve the quality of honey

    Kelantan sebuah negeri yang mempunyai dialek yang unik dan masyarakatnya mempunyai identiti ketimuran yang tinggi. Masyarakatnya menggunakan dialek Kelantan dalam komunikasi harian. Hal ini menyebabkan masyarakat Kelantan mempunyai kesukaran untuk berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Melayu dengan betul. Selain itu, penggunaan dialek yang pekat juga mendedahkan para pelajar sekolah kepada masalah dalam membezakan antara bahasa Melayu dengan dialek tempatan. Terdapat kajian yang menyatakan penggunaan dialek menyebabkan golongan pelajar ini mempunyai tahap keyakinan diri yang rendah semasa proses pembelajaran dalam kelas. Hal ini juga terjadi kesan daripada proses pengajaran guru yang mengutamakan dialek tempatan semasa mengajar di dalam kelas. Maka, artikel ini bertujuan meneliti penggunaan dialek dalam proses pembelajaran di dalam kelas dan pengaruh dialek dalam mempengaruhi tahap keyakinan diri pelajar sekolah menengah di Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah kualitatif iaitu kaedah temu bual mendalam dan pemerhatian tidak turut serta ke atas 21 orang pelajar sekolah menengah. Kaedah temu bual digunakan untuk meneliti penggunaan dialek dalam kelas dan pengaruh dialek dalam keyakinan diri pelajar. Manakala, kaedah pemerhatian dilakukan untuk melihat gerak-geri dan emosi pelajar sepanjang kajian lapangan. Hasil dapatan mendapati dialek bukan faktor utama yang mempengaruhi tahap keyakinan diri pelajar sekolah menengah di Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Kajian ini turut membincangkan tentang kepentingan mengukuhkan kemahiran komunikasi berkesan dan menguasai bahasa Melayu.  ABSTRACT Kelantan is a state with a unique dialect and its people are equipped with very high levels of southern identity. Owing to the Kelantaneses’ frequent use of the Kelantan dialect in their daily communication, this has led to them having difficulties communicating in languages other than in the Kelantan dialect.Additionally , this extreme dialect usage also exposes  students to  problems of distinguishing the Malay language with the local dialect. Studies have shown that the dialect usage caused students to have low confidence level during classroom learning processes. It is also due to  teachers’ emphasizing the local dialect in the classroom. Therefore, this article aims to examine the dialect usage during the learning process in the classroom and the impact of dialects in influencing the level of confidence of secondary school students in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. This study used qualitative methods on 21 secondary students, which included in-depth interviews and non-participant observations. In-depth interview methods was used to examine the dialect usage in the classroom and the impact of dialects on students\u27 confidence levelwhile, non-participant observation method was used to observe the student’s body language and change of emotions throughout the field study. Findings show that dialects are not a major factor affecting secondary school student’s confidence levels in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. This paper also discusses on the importance of strengthening the effective communication skills and mastering the Malay language

    Code of Ethics for the Application of Islam in Kelantan

    Local authorities in Kelantan have implemented the Islamic dress code in stages to safeguard/take care of the general welfare of Muslim women in Kelantan. In this study, what is emphasized is the perception of Muslim women in regards to the aurah covering and to measure the extent of their awareness in receiving the campaign to cover their aurah in accordance with Islamic syariah and rules of the Kelantan state government. This study is a quantitative study involving 220 Muslim female respondents aged 18 to 20 years. The findings of the study showed that the majority of respondents agreed with the campaign implemented by the state government in accordance with their understanding. However, in terms of the levels of shariah-compliant practices are still low. The majority of respondents stated that they always observe Muslim women not wearing shariah compliant clothing. This shows that the acceptance of the aurat covering campaign carried out by the Kelantan state government is still not supported with the practice of wearing Muslim women in their daily lives. The findings of this study are expected to provide clear information to certain parties in order to strengthen their efforts to reinforce the implementation of the shariah-compliant application campaign in Kelantan

    The impact of COVID-19 on Islamic banking can be analysed into three possible risks, such as financing risks, impairment of assets, and tightening the profit-sharing system. Compared to conventional banks, Islamic banking is more flexible in meeting the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Basically, the national banking system had predicted trouble due to the COVID-19 epidemic. On the other hand, Islamic banks are at an advantage with the theory of profit-sharing, thus increasing its effectiveness in dealing with crises. Islamic banks’ dominance throughout these challenging times is undoubtedly an excellent opportunity to strengthen their market share. Besides, Islamic banks can face risks, such as providing loans, deteriorating asset quality, and tightening profit sharing. Therefore, Islamic banks must understand these risks to ensure their plans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Admittedly, performing restricted expansion into the digital share is a challenging decision that should be practised by Islamic banks.     Assessing the Dynamics of Urban Growth and Land Use Changes in Jeli Using Geospatial Technique

    Land use change pattern in Jeli is been given a focus as part of tool for land planning and development. An increasing of population in Jeli make this study is relevant to aid an understanding on land use changes in this area due to the demanded for development and rapid land utilisation. Land use change pattern can be obtained via geospatial technique by Geographical Information System (GIS) together with satellite imagery analysis. In this study, land use maps produced from supervised classification using maximum likelihood algorithm give a high accuracy of 92.05%. From classified land use images, urban expansion index (SI) were then calculated from year 1984 to 2012. Pearson’s correlation analysis discovered a strong negative correlation between forest and agricultural areas which reflected that with increased of agriculture area, forest reserve was found depleted. The SI of Jeli showed a low to rapid growth in 1994 and 1997 to 2012 respectively. The study reflected the progressive development in Jeli promotes sustainable usage of forest area when effort of reforestation was carried out forming a co-existence land use category between forest and agriculture

    Removal of methyl red in wastewater by activated carbon derived from rice husk

    The textile industry is the largest industry contributing to the wastewater pollution and is a concern for the environment today. This pollution occurs when wastewater from the textile industry discharges the water into the river and it will affect both aquatic and human life. There are several ways to overcome this pollution problem but the current method is very expensive and its effectiveness depends on the colour of the dye. In this research, activated carbon of rice husk was used as an adsorbent to remove the methyl red dye from the wastewater. To detect the effectiveness of rice husk, two materials were used which were raw rice husk and also activated carbon to remove methyl red dyes from wastewater. There are four parameters used to investigate the optimum level which are the effect of initial dye concentrations ranges from (2 mg/L-10 mg/L), contact time (20-100 minutes), pH (2-10) and adsorbent dosage (0.5-2.5 g). The percentage of dye is calculated and recorded to see the comparison between raw rice husk and also activated carbon of rice husk. The results show that the rice husk can be used as a potential adsorbent to remove methyl red from the waste water
