    No full text
The initial perception of readers towards a book begins with the attractive design of its cover. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the visual elements of illustration and photography on the cover of the Peranakan Chinese book based on the Semiotic analysis of Stokes (2003). This study applies a qualitative method involving research instruments such as document analysis and literature review. The findings of the study have shown that all three selected books, namely "Cina Peranakan Tirok Terengganu," "Cina Peranakan Kelantan: Menerusi Lensa Sosiologi," and "Peranakan Cina Kelantan: Sintesis Cina Tanah Besar dan Melayu Tanah Melayu," apply Semiotic analysis of Stokes (2003) by considering the elements of form, color, and image. Furthermore, this study also aims to enhance readers\u27 understanding of Peranakan Chinese culture in order to preserve and elevate this culture to a higher level

THE MOMENTOUS OF AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION IN CONTEMPORARY ART

ABSTRACT Artists\u27 search for alienating and interactive venues to exhibit their work coincided with the growth of contemporary art in the latter half of the 1950s. The viewers of participatory art will no longer be passive; rather, they will be the ones who complete the artwork\u27s purpose or test the limits of physical experience. The precise contexts of creations and responses required funding in order to fund the concept of "participation." However, it opens up new ways in which works that don\u27t work in this style or ethical quandaries are deliberately left unsolved defeating the artwork\u27s purpose. Thus, this paper will drive more profound to analyze three interactive artworks by Malaysian artists on the significance of audience participation from the year 2014 to 2019. Feldman’s theory of art criticism which has been used in analyzing interactive artworks is only unraveling from the context aspect of the artworks. However, strengthened by the theory of new media art by Marshall McLuhan and Lev Manovich, analysis has become more accurate in the use of element data, navigable space, automation, transcoding, etc. Hopefully, this research will aid and serve as a new knowledge and reference point for future generations.

Cost-Benefit Analysis in The Local Authorities and Effective Decision-Making in Public Investment

    No full text
Issues on sustainable cities and communities have been intensely debated nowadays. In Malaysia, Local Authorities (LAs) are among the stakeholders responsible for these matters. However, LAs have received criticism for poor financial management in generating and managing the funds which hindered them from performing their duties in fulfilling public expectations. Thus, the Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) was introduced as a tool that guided their decision on the projects that would be beneficial to the societies and involve an acceptable trade-off cost. Accordingly, this article discusses the literature on CBA, its use in decision-making, and the factors influencing its implementation. The stakeholders’ theory was employed to assess the expected relationship between the use of CBA and its effectiveness in public investment decision-making. Notably, this article contributes to the LAs by providing input on the CBA role and the factors that can encourage its application in investment evaluation, particularly in the public sector

Effects of Organizational Justice on Social Loafing: The Mediating Role of Felt Obligation

    No full text
Although there has been an increasing body of work on social loafing for over ten years, there are still gaps in our understanding that require further investigation. There is currently a lack of research on organizational justice and the sense of duty towards social loafing. This study examines how organizational fairness (procedural, distributive, interactional) affects social loafing to address a gap in the existing literature. According to social exchange theory, the study predicted that perceived obligation would act as a mediator in the relationship between organizational justice and social loafing. Information was collected from 272 private sector employees in Malaysia. The measurements were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. With the exception of distributive justice, most direct links have a considerable influence on social loafing, as indicated by the data. Statistical findings confirmed the mediating role of perceived obligation between procedural fairness, distributive justice, and social loafing. The findings did not show that felt obligation plays a mediating role in the link between interactional justice and social loafing behavior. The study advanced knowledge by establishing new connections between organizational fairness, felt obligation, and social loafing behavior. Distinct measures of employees\u27 perceptions of organizational justice offer a more comprehensive understanding of the connection between negative outcomes and their views of the organization. Additionally, the reciprocation process explains the link between organizational justice and social loafing. This research demonstrates that organizational fairness is a crucial component in predicting social loafing behavior, which would be advantageous for employers and human resource experts. Improvements can be made by establishing equitable and uniform workplace standards, encouraging employee input and involvement in decision-making, and demonstrating decency and respect for subordinates to prevent counterproductive actions like social loafing

Determination and Prediction of Corrosion Integrity on RV Discovery Via Non-Destructive Test (NDT) And Artificial Neural Network (ANN)

Marine environment is a harsh and severe environment for a metal structure like vessel, oil rigs and port infrastructure. A regular survey or monitoring is needed to reduce a structure failure due to the corrosion. To be seaworthy, a vessel should undergo a regular survey under specified timeframe. This survey is time consuming and costly. An alternative approach is required to predict the structural integrity of a vessel. Artificial Neural Network is one of the current methods that can be used to predict the deterioration rate of a structure. Corrosion integrity of RV-Discovery was determined via plate thickness measurement, coating thickness measurement and potential measurement. The data obtained from these measurements were used in artificial neural network to predict the deterioration rate. The results indicate that the plate and coating thickness reduction percentage is within minimal range while the average potential changes show that the structure is in passivation state. It implies that the structural integrity is in a good state with no or minimal maintenance required. The prediction of deterioration rate also shows that Scaled Conjugate Gradient (SCG) training algorithm was able to predict with over 95% of confidence and low mean square error

Fish meal and soybean meal are the main sources of protein in most fish feeds. Changes in feed and fish production costs are a concern for aquaculturists. Because they are a natural component of fish diets and have a high protein, vitamin, and digestibility profile, insects may be able to contribute to meeting the growing demand for fishmeal. This study was a preliminary investigation on the effect of various dietary combinations (Blaptica dubia + commercial pellet) on the weight of red hybrid tilapia, Oreochromis sp. fry. The Oreochromis sp. fingerlings were acclimatized to the laboratory condition for seven days. Five different mixtures of feed were concocted [T1 (60% B. dubia + 40% commercial pellet), T2 (70% B. dubia + 30% commercial pellet), T3 (80% B. dubia + 20% commercial pellet), T4 (90% B. dubia + 10% commercial pellet) and T5 (100% B. dubia)]. The control group of Oreochromis sp. was fed with 100% commercial pellet. Throughout the experiment period, the growth of the fish was monitored weekly for 15 weeks. Then, the fish were euthanatized, and the liver was subjected to histology analysis. The results show that T3, T4, and T5 feed mixtures promote the best growth and survival rate for Oreochromis sp. while causing liver damage. T1 and T2 fish feed ratios are better alternatives as they promote healthy fish and increased weight (p < 0.05)

Exploring Racial Discrimination in Popular Culture in English Language Classrooms

    No full text
Today more and more youths are engaging themselves online and making use of media content such as popular culture for personal development. Popular culture, which is also known as mass culture or pop culture, refers to collection of behaviours, values, and artefacts that are dominant or predominant in a society at a given time. This includes popular music, print, cyber culture, sports, entertainment, leisure, fads, advertising and television. Among the various genres, popular music represents a type of popular culture that has strong appealing power. The death of George Floyd has triggered the Black Lives Matter movement not only in the US but also elsewhere in other parts of the world. The question is, is there any avenue where such an issue can be addressed ‘responsibly’ without silencing others under the pretext of sensitivity? Can language classrooms provide a conducive and safe environment to address this? Therefore, this study has two objectives; first is to establish and evaluate students’ general perception of the Black Lives Matter movement, racial discrimination experiences and interest in pop culture via Google Forms. Next, this paper also wishes  to investigate the content of popular music whether they contain relatable and useful materials to address delicate issues like racial discrimination. Beyoncé’s “Black Parade” and Alicia Keys’, “A Perfect Way to Die” song lyrics are chosen for content analysis. Both the statistics and analysis can help one to understand what the respondents think, evaluate the nature, meanings and relationships of certain particular terms, themes, or concepts and design suitable learning activities for meaningful learning experience
