Microtremor array survey on soil velocity structure of Sabae Basin
Get PDFIn order to clarify a ground structure of the section where Sabae Fault was crossed, a microtremor array observation was done at five points in the traverse line in east and west in Sabae Basin. A ground model consisted of four soil layers where the S wave velocities were given was considered, and the thickness of each layer was presumed by inverse analysis of the dispersion curve through genetic algorithm. As a result, the point where the seismic bedrock was the deepest was on the west edge, and the depth was about 1,400m. And, a steep slope was guessed in the seismic bedrock in the underground at the vicinity of Sabae Fault. On the other hand, it was suggested that the presumed ground structure of the east side of the fault should be reexamined.departmental bulletin pape

Preconcentration of trace heavy metals in aqueous solutions by thermoresponsive polymer-mediated extraction for the analysis of natural water
Get PDFIn the preconcentration of trace heavy metals in aqueous solutions with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), the synthetic method of PNIPAAm was investigated to reduce the dissolution time of precipitated polymer phase with N,N-dimethylmethanamide (DMF) and to improve the measurement reproducibility of graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS). PNIPAAm was synthesized by using NIPAAm in the range of 8 to 11.5 g. The dissolution time of precipitated polymer phase increased when the amount of NIPAAm was less than previously used weight (11.5 g). PNIPAAm was synthesized by changing the addition amount of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethane- 1,2-diamine (TEMED) from 0.5 to 50 ml. Both the dissolution time and the viscosity of dissolved solution were greatly reduced by adding 50 ml of TEMED. The sample solution containing analytes of 0.5 ng ml-1 each was concentrated with the PNIPAAm synthesized by using 11.5 g of NIPAAm and 50 ml of TEMED. A 5-μl aliquot of the resulting solution was measured by GF-AAS. The determined concentrations of analytes were ranging from 20 to 30 ng ml-1, and relative standard deviations (RSDs, n = 3) were ca. 4%. Although the RSDs significantly improved compared to previously obtained values (more than 15%), the loss of metal chelates was found during the measurement of GF-AAS. Further investigation on the measurement of GF-AAS, such as the use of different chelating agents and the addition of a matrix modifier, is required in order to apply the proposed method to the analysis of natural water.departmental bulletin pape
Wastewater Treatment by Ozone Activated Sludge Process
Get PDFIn this study, the effect of ozone addition to the aeration tank was investigated for both fixed-film and suspended-growth activated sludge processes. In the fixed-film process, ozone addition increased effluent SS concentration, indicating release of biomass from the carriers. In the suspended growth process, ozone addition improved settleability of activated sludge and hence effluent quality. Overall, the ozone activated sludge processes were demonstrated to improve BOD removal and to have no effect on the reduction of excess sludge production.departmental bulletin pape
Properties of Detection of Dust and Sandstorms by AVI Method
Get PDFThe properties of detection of dust and sandstorms (DSS) by AVI method are examined. The aerosol vapor index (AVI) is defined as AVI=T12-T11, where T12 and T11 are the brightness temperatures respectively at 12μm and 11μm wave length. MODIS data of Terra/Aqua satellites from China to Japan in April 2006 are used. The T11 vs AVI scatter charts in narrow regions are made. Referring to the simulation result by Gu et. al., it is shown that the larger AVI value is, the larger the optical thickness of DSS is, in the case of narrow region on land and sea with DSS that does not include cloud.
