RISK MANAGEMENT LEARNING FROM THE EARTHQUAKES IN THE PAST

    Get PDF
In 2011, we faced the unprecedented earthquake at Tohoku areas in Japan on March 11th. Looking back to the past, we had so many earthquakes and the Tsunami at Tohoku areas before. I wonder if these experiences could have been good lessons to us or not. Each time, we are repeating the disasters and we should not repeat such a disaster again. Personally, I met the strong earthquake in Christchurch of New-Zealand almost at the same timing with Tohoku earthquake and I would stress that the risk-management method should be penetrated.departmental bulletin pape

Investigation about the continuity of the sign in a transit center (1)

    Get PDF
In this research, at JR Hiroshima Station and JR Okayama Station, the route was set up and investigation about the continuity of a sign was conducted. At JR Hiroshima Station, the sign of the route I exists continuously. However, by the route II, a Shinkansen exit and an underground passage have few signs. At JR Okayama Station, the station square of the route I has few signs, and a sign exists in the underground passage of the route II continuously. At JR Hirosima Station, there is much duplication of sign information and a user may get confused.departmental bulletin pape

Japanese University Students' Images of the Four Seasons

    Get PDF
When we see, hear, and think about “color" and “shape," etc., we evoke our experience and the event, etc. which is related to them. This is the action that is called the “association of ideas," that is, “association." In this study, the author investigated Japanese university students' associated images of the four seasons in Japanese and English. The questionnaire survey was done and the answers were analyzed using the text mining software. As a result, it was cleared that they evoke more images of the four seasons in Japanese than in English, the images in the katakana mark are more evoked in the case of English, and more positive images tend to be evoked for English expressions.departmental bulletin pape

OPTIMUM SEISMIC DESIGN OF UNEQUAL-SPAN CONTINUOUS BRIDGE SYSTEM WITH TWO STEEL MAIN GIRDERS

    Get PDF
In this study, the applicability and feasibility of the optimum seismic design system with the design of experiments to unequal-span continuous bridge system with two steel main girders is investigated. In the design formulation, the heights of rubber bearings, cross-sectional dimensions and amount of steel reinforcements for RC piers and the detail of concrete pile foundation are taken into account as the design variables. The relative horizontal displacements of rubber bearings, the ductile factor of RC piers, and the yield constraint on the cast-in-place concrete pile foundation are the ultimate performance constraints due to the level 2 earthquakes. In a numerical example, the determination process of optimum solution is demonstrated for a 5-span continuous bridge system with two steel main girders subjected to the type-I standard acceleration wave in the level 2 earthquakes. The applicability of the design method to the bridge system with two steel main girders is illustrated.departmental bulletin pape

Study on Lighting Effects in Outdoor Noh Stage lit by Firelights

    Get PDF
A Noh play was held at the Fukatani Noh stage lit by firelights, which is a 100-year-old outdoor Noh stage of Motoyu-Ishiya at Fukatani hot springs located in Kanazawa city, Ishikawa prefecture. After the Noh play the Noh stage was re-illuminated by two firelights and a few auxiliary electric lights, which is the approximately same condition as the actual Noh play, a photometry survey was conducted. The purpose of this paper is to investigate lighting effects in the Noh stage lit by firelights in terms of illuminances and luminances in the work planes. As a result, impression of the subtle and profound in the Noh stage may be reinforced by lighting produced by firelights.departmental bulletin pape

A Practice of Programming Education by Excel VBA

    Get PDF
An investigation of the usefulness of VBA in Microsoft Excel to educate students about Programming. The objective of this course was to enable students not majoring in programming to master programming skills relevant to their daily lives. This course was to enable students not majoring in programming to master programming skills relevant to their daily lives. This course ran over several yeas and found that student motivation was maintained when students could develop software that was relevant and useful. This showed that students performed best in constructive learning environments. However, a certain foundation level of programming knowledge, obtained from lectures, is necessary to engage in programming tasks.departmental bulletin pape

Influence and Discrimination of Clouds in the Detection of Dust and Sandstorms using AVI Method

    Get PDF
The AVI method can detect the dust and sandstorms (DSS) in satellite images both at daytime and night. The aerosol vapor index (AVI) is defined as AVI=T12-T11, where T12 and T11 are the brightness temperatures at 12μm and 11μm wave lengths, respectively. The fault of AVI method is to mistake thick clouds for DSS occasionally. In this paper, it is explained that usual clouds bring the effect of AVI0. Two MODIS images of the cloud of AVI>0 are shown and interpreted by using the AVI vs. T11 scatter charts. The composite color images which can discriminate DSS from clouds etc. are proposed. Two are for daytime MODIS and another one is for nighttime MODIS.departmental bulletin pape

We study the influence P-Δ effect on the dynamic response of 20 story steel frames under extreme earthquake ground motions. In this paper, we perform nonlinear time-history analyses lumped mass system models having different design base shear.departmental bulletin pape

Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication of Stern-tube Bearings with Misalignment

    Get PDF
Observations were made of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of stern-tube bearings on the propeller shaft with the stern-tube bearing in an inclined state. The force generated by the propeller can be neglected based on the assumption that the propeller shaft has a low rotation frequency. The magnitudes of the inclination and deflection of the propeller shaft were calculated under these conditions, and numeric values for the approximate range of inclination and deflection were measured. The magnitudes of inclination and deflection calculated under these conditions were used as parameters to calculate the elastohydrodynamic lubrication characteristics under various conditions. The relationship between oil film pressure distribution and deflection mode of the bearings was also calculated.departmental bulletin pape

Non-contact Quantitative Microwave Detection of Radiation Induced Degradation of Polymers (III)

    Get PDF
In 2012, there are 50 commercial nuclear power plants in Japan. There are 20 nuclear power plants which are working for 30 years or more. It is very important to measure the aged deterioration of the cable used in those nuclear power plants. Generally, degradation of a cable was measured by the tensile test. It was difficult to measure an electrical property quickly and nondestructively. We developed the nondestructive measurement technology of cable degradation which used microwave technology.departmental bulletin pape
