The study on the water environment of the Osyouzu River
Although mass mortality of fishes sometimes occurs in the Osyouzu River, the cause is not necessarily clear. Therefore, the water environment of the river was evaluated by testing the water quality for the purpose of the conservation of the river. The measured values for COD and total phosphorus were almost unchanged regardless of industrial waste water from peripheral factories. On the other hand, the determined values for total nitrogen considerably exceeded environmental standards. This indicates that the polluted water effluents from the factories may occur. Further investigation of the water effluents from the factories is required for the conservation the water environment of the Osyouzu River.departmental bulletin pape
Observation of heat flux and evaporation at Awara in 2012
The heat fluxes and evaporation rate are observed by three methods at Awara observation site near Lake Kitagata, Awara City Fukui Prefecture in 2012. One is the water balance method using soil columns and two are meteorological methods, Bowen ratio method and eddy correlation method with heat budget equation. The measured latent heat flux by using Bowen ratio is 8.2% smaller than that of by eddy correlation method. The difference of evaporation rate between measured by soil columns and meteorological methods are ranging -0.3 to 0.28 mm/h.The differences are mainly cause to poor accurate of the soil column method.departmental bulletin pape
DETERIORATED BEARING IN EXISTING BRIDGE
The bridge bearing is the most important element to support the several loads and ensure the seismic resistance. Recently the deteriorated bearings have been observed remarkably and many of them need to replace. Whereas in the field of seismic design of highway bridge the advanced seismic design code was provided and several seismic reinforcing works were developed for existing bridges, the bridge reinforcements for earthquakes have not been made a progress in the local governments for the reason of poor maintenance budget. The repair work by replacing the deteriorated bearing with seismic-isolation bearing is developed to satisfy the seismic requirement. In this study, optimum design method is developed for seismic-isolation bearing in time of replacing deteriorated bearing in existing bridge. The optimum design problem is formulated to find the size of seismic-isolation bearing considering the constraints related to the fabrication of bearing and performance at ultimate state due to the level 2 earthquakes. The effectiveness and applicability of the method is investigated by applying it to the assumed realistic problem in which the original metal bearing is replaced with the seismic-isolation bearing.departmental bulletin pape
Synthesis and Characterization of Liquid-Crystalline Acylated Ethylcelluloses
Ethy1cellulose (EC) exhibits interesting behavior in the formation of liquid crystals. Early observations indicated that most cellulosics formed right-handed cholesteric structure. However, EC in chloroform and acetic acid (AA) solutions took left-handed cholesteric liquid crystals, whereas EC in dichloroacetic acid (DCA) solution had right-handed ones. In the present study, (phenylacetyl)ethylcellulose (PA-EC) was prepared by the reaction of phenylacetyl chloride with EC having a degree of ethyl substitution (DSEt) of 2.26 in N,N-dimethylacetamide solution using triethylamine as proton scavenger. Reactions were usually carried out at room temperature for one week, which provided a variety of phenylacetyl contents (degree of substitution of phenylacetyl (DSPa) = 0.02, 0.11, 0.32, and 0.43). The chloroform and AA solutions of PA-EC with DSPa = 0.32 displayed a right-handed cholesteric liquid crystalline phase, while the DCA solution showed a left-handed one.departmental bulletin pape
Study of eutectic low-melting alloy using In, Bi, and Sn
Liquid metal cooled reactors are currently one design option being considered as the next generation of power production by the Generation-IV international forum for the development of nuclear power plant designs. Currently, Russia, India, China, France, South Korea, and Japan are actively pursuing liquid metal cooled reactor concepts. The liquid metal coolants being considered for these designs are sodium, lead and lead-bismuth eutectic; these designs utilize reactive and toxic materials at temperatures up to 800℃for nuclear power plant operations. To simulate these systems with the actual coolant material requires a high level of safety systems. Therefore, a less toxic and less reactive liquid metal that can be used to simulate liquid metal cooled flows will allow for a greater number of investigations and experimentation of liquid metal flow with regards to the field of thermal hydraulics. Good candidates for a liquid metal experimental fluid are alloys from the indium-bismuth-tin system such as Field's metal, which by weight percent is 51% indium, 32.5% bismuth and 16.5% tin and possesses a melting temperature of 60℃. However, the thermodynamic properties of Field's metal and similar alloys in their liquid state are not well described in literature, especially for the temperature range for thermal hydraulic applications. Accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of a coolant is essential for understanding the physical phenomena associated with the flow of fluids. This work experimentally measures the specific heat of the indium-bismuth-tin tertiary system and analyzes the results to determine if the thermodynamic properties of the system are desirable for experimental modeling applications.departmental bulletin pape
Development of a Learning Tool for Computer Programming Using a Robot for ET Software Design Robot Contest
We have developed a learning tool for students so that they can have interest in computer programming. We have employed a robot specified by ET Robocon (ET software design robot contest), where the robot is controlled by a program running in the robot itself. In the developed tool a program developed by a student runs on a separate PC and controls the robot through wireless communication by Bluetooth. As for the programming language, which students learn, we have selected Python because of its simplicity and familiarity with the object oriented programming. A student can start programming by a simple sequential control of the robot and can extend it to the one that is able to realize line tracing.departmental bulletin pape
Effects of the polarization on a Class A laser chaos
Effects of the light polarization on a chaotic oscillation in a single-mode He-Ne class A laser(6328Å) was investigated using optical delayed feedback with an external mirror. We observed time series, spectra, phase portraits and Lyapunov exponents for each linear and random polarized lasers. Even if the same feedback rate, the fluctuation of the linear polarized laser is larger that of random polarized laser. Then, it is revealed that an electric field of an inner cavity is directly interacted to optical delayed feedback light.departmental bulletin pape

What is the Fundamental Buddhism?
"The purpose of this paper is to give a new outline of the fundamental Buddhism as the Sakyamuni's Buddhism in primitive sutras, against the predominant understanding of it in the Buddhism study that takes its foundation thought as the dependent origination theory that all things happen depending on other things. The fundamental Buddhism comes into existence from the Sakyamuni's foundation experience of the enlightenment. According to Pali primitive sutras, considered the collected discourses of Sakyamuni, the foundation experience happens in concentration on a certain phenomenon and is an experience to arrive at the Nirvana. And this is not only an experience to realize it but also one to have become it together with all phenomena. The first foundation theory of the fundamental Buddhism based on such foundation experience is that all things are in reality the Nirvana as the transcendent Truth. The second is that the road for arriving at the Nirvana is concentration on a certain phenomenon. The best way of life based on these foundation theories is a way of life to have arrived at the Nirvana where all sufferings are overcome. But the road for arriving at the Nirvana is concentration on a certain phenomenon. Therefore, the best way of life is one to concentrate on our given life. That is, it is a way of life to devote ourselves to our given life and to live in it sincerely."departmental bulletin pape
