    Monitoring of Marine Debris in Japan Sea Using Multi-Spectral Satellite Images

    It is well known that the marine debris flow in the ocean gives serious damage to the environment in seashore regions. The marine debris not only from domestic rivers but also from neighboring countries continues to be washed up to the seashore of Japan Sea. It is important to get to know the situation of debris floating on the sea not only in the field of environmental research but also in the viewpoint of international relationship. In this paper, therefore, the monitoring of the marine debris has been carried out using satellite remote sensing techniques. As a first step of this research, a method to identify debris floating on the sea area has been proposed using two dimensional scatter diagrams for satellite spectral bands with high spatial resolution.departmental bulletin pape

    Effects in “Introduction to Psychology" Class. : Could Students Enhance Metacognitive Skills through the Class?

    This study examined the effects of the implementation to enhance metacognitive skills for freshmen. The program incorporated the contents of developing metacognitive skills into “Introduction to Psychology" class. In the class, college students worked at exercises that reflect their styles and processes of cognitions, affections, and social problem solving through worksheets after receiving lectures about psychological theories. The results of pre- and post- tests demonstrated significantly improved higher levels of self-esteem , metacognitive skills and stress management self-efficacy scales. From the results, this study revealed the beneficial effects of implementing the program for developing metacognition skills in the class.departmental bulletin pape

    The Relationships between Sprint Running, Jumping, Throwing Performances and Abdominal Muscle Thickness

    This study aimed to examine the relationships between sprint running, jumping, throwing performances and abdominal muscle thickness. Subjects were 12 healthy young males (age: 18.8 ± 0.7 years, height: 166.1 ± 5.6 cm, weight: 61.1 ± 6.5 kg). They took 50 m run, standing broad jump, and handball throwing tests. An ultrasound imaging device (GT-101, TANITA, Tokyo, Japan) was used to measure the thickness of the abdominal rectus muscles, external oblique muscle, internal oblique muscle, and transverse abdominal muscle. Abdominal rectus muscle thickness showed significant correlations with 50 m run and standing broad jump, and internal oblique muscle thickness showed significant correlations with 50 m run, standing broad jump, and handball throwing (|r| = 0.57-0.68). It was suggested that enforcing muscles to stabilize the trunk in addition to muscles which relate directly to movements is also important. Hence, when strengthening the abdominal muscle groups, the program to intently enforce abdominal rectus muscle and internal oblique muscle would be effective.departmental bulletin pape

    A Trial Science Café at FUT

    We conducted a questionnaire aimed at high school students in order to examine their interest in science, and found most students dislike science, although they are interested in scientific experiments. This result shows the possibility of enhancing the scientific interest of lower level students through experiencing scientific experiments. Therefore we have started the Science Café at FUT, where they can conduct a variety of simple experiments and enjoy interesting lectures which can excite and stimulate their scientific minds.     As the recent social trend, designers are required to contribute to revitalize the community through art activities, and Web designers should also respond to the request. However, because it is difficult to apply the technologies of Web design to art works, few web designers participate in regional revitalization projects. That's the reason we produced and displayed the interactive art works using a Web camera and Action Script in a community festival, and the success verified the potential of art. The exhibition received various positive feedback from the viewers, and it showed that the Web design technologies can be used for art works. Moreover, because ActionScript was used for the exhibition, it can be easily expected that the art works can also be applied as a simple analytical instrument by using ActionScript Libraries that are distributed over the Web.departmental bulletin pape

    Study on Sea Salt Particles Flying Behavior

    Spent nuclear fuel, which is used in nuclear power plants, contains useful fissile material such as plutonium. Spent nuclear fuel is stored in spent nuclear fuel interim storage facility until it is re-processed. Spent nuclear fuel interim storage facility is built in coastal and is designed to provide natural cooling. Behavior evaluation of sea salt particles (Environmental contamination factor) is important for facility design. In this study, we developed a new measurement device for flying sea salt amount, replacing the dry gauze method that is defined JIS have been conventionally used. The new measuring device was confirmed experimentally, to have a better performance than dry gauze method. By using the new measurement device, we measure the relationship between the flying sea salt amount and the distance from the shoreline. We confirm the amount of flying sea salt particles is reduced with increasing distance from the shoreline, and it is increased with increasing height from the sea level.departmental bulletin pape

    A Dynamical Diffraction Theory of X-rays for a Largely Distorted Crystal I. Fundamental Equations

    A new dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction is given for a largely distorted crystal. The wave field inside the crystal is described using a kind of modified Bloch waves with amplitude modulation, assuming that the modulation is “slowly varying" not in the sub-micron level but in the nanometer level. Therefore, the present theory is applicable to very heavy lattice distortion compared with the previous dynamical theory. The present theory is based on the Maxwell's wave equation for the electric field, in which the electric field appearing in the electric polarization term is approximated to the transverse component of the electric field. The results give a set of fundamental equations for the wave filed about the Fourier coefficients and the local variation of the Bloch waves. It is equivalent to, in a perfect crystal, the fundamental equations given by Laue's dynamical theory, and also it leads to Takagi's equations for the electric displacement.departmental bulletin pape

    On the “Haisyo" of Shinto Shrine in “Ohmi-Houkan"

    The building of worship place which is called “Haisyo" is one of the characteristics of the shrine in Wakasa-district, Fukui Prefecture. And buildings similar to “Haisyo" are seen the shrine in Kyoto and Shiga Prefecture. In previous studies the architectural styles, the characteristics and the distribution of “Haisyo" were reported. From the results of the study “Haisyo" of independent type is the official “Haisyo". And the standard architectural styles of independent “Haisyo" was reported the following. The frontage and the depth are same one span, the roof style style is “Karahafu-zukuri", the no wall and no housing. In this paper, “Haisyo" of Shinto Shrine in “Ohmi-Houkan" is considered. As a result, this paper found the following. The pictorial map of 111 sheets in “Ohmi-Houkan" is found compellation of “Haisyo" is two examples and this inside thirteen pictorial maps to which "Haisyo" is drawn. Two shrine buildings indicated to be “Haisyo" are not “Haisyo" that are "Wari-Haiden". “Haisyo" resembles “Shinmon" in buildings form.
