This paper describes the architecture and implementation of a wireless sensor network for educational use. The purpose of this development is intended to support students to develop original IoT applications using the wireless sensor network. The system consists of Raspberry Pi as a sensor server and XBee modules, which employ ZigBee as a wireless interface. All the software developed in this study is written in Python and is open to students. Students are allowed to develop their own IoT applications based on their own ideas. This paper first introduces the outline of ZigBee and XBee, then it describes the detail of XBee control by Python and its interface with CGI program. It also reports the experiments of multi-hop communication by XBee modules and the exclusive control, which is needed to keep consistency of XBee control when multiple users try to access the sensor server simultaneously. Basic functions of the sensor network have been confirmed through the experiments.departmental bulletin pape

Effects of the Degree and Condition of Knee Pain on the Activities of Daily Living in Elderly Females
This study aimed to examine the differences in the activities of daily living (ADL) among the female elderly without knee pain (G1), with mild knee pain (G2), and with severe knee pain (G3). Our results demonstrated that ascending and descending stairs was inferior in the following order: G3 group > G2 group > G1 group. The G2 and G3 groups were inferior in sitting up to the G1 group. The G3 group was inferior in dressing while standing to the G1 and G2 groups. The G3 group was inferior in running, jumping across a ditch, standing within a bus or train, rolling up and putting away bedding, and rising from kneeling to the G1 group. In conclusion, female elderly with severe knee pain are inferior in ADLs that required movement of the knee joint such as locomotion, posture-change, and stability. In addition, it was judged that the female elderly with mild knee pain are inferior in the achievement of “ascending and descending the stairs" and “rising from kneeling."departmental bulletin pape

Improvement of the fuzzy variables optimization technique for the pulmonary elastance estimation
The ventilation condition of artificial respiration should be set carefully, and the setting is expected to match individual pulmonary characteristic of each patient. However, we do not understand the pulmonary characteristic of the patient by the measurement of data. Therefore, the setting of the artificial respirator is decided by the experience and the intuition of the doctor. Purposes of this study are to develop a method to estimate the static P-V curve and the pulmonary elastance of the patient. The static P-V curve expresses the important feature of the lung, and this curve is a basis for deciding the air-way pressure limit value. In the previous works, we proposed the iterative fuzzy estimation method and the random optimization of the fuzzy variables. In this paper, a modified optimization algorithm is proposed. A numerical example is shown to illustrate the improvement in our modified algorithm.departmental bulletin pape
Forced Vibration of a Pipe Conveying Fluid due to the External Excitation
Linear stability of a pipe conveying fluid has been studied as a classical problem of the elastic stability problem. The straight position of a pipe can be destabilized by Hopf bifurcation. The critical value of the fluid velocity at which the straight position of a pipe loses its stability is called critical flow velocity. When the fluid velocity is slightly smaller than its critical value for the Hopf bifurcation, the damping ratio of a certain mode becomes very small. In such region, the forced vibration of a pipe comes up as a problem, when subjected to the external excitation. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the frequency response of forced vibration of a pipe which is subjected to the external excitation.departmental bulletin pape
Basic Study on BWR Plant Behavior under the Condition of Severe Accident(1)
In this paper, we report on the results using the BWR plant simulator about the plant behavior under the condition of the severe accident that LOCA occurs but ECCS fails the water irrigation into the reactor core. The simulation experiments were carried out for the cases that LOCA has occurred in the main steam piping or in the recirculation piping, respectively. As for the results about the relationship between the LOCA area and the time from LOCA occurs until the fuel temperature rise start, the effect that RCIC operated was extremely big for LOCA area of up to 100cm2 for both type LOCA. In the case of main steam system LOCA, the core water level suddenly decreased for large LOCA of 2000cm2 area, however, if the irrigation into the reactor core was carried out 30min after LOCA occurrence, the core had little damage. In addition, the H2 concentration in the containment vessel did not exceed both limits of H2 explosion nor detonation. The pressure of the containment vessel was around 3kg/cm2 of design value, so the soundness of the containment vessel was confirmed. On the other hand, for the recirculation system LOCA of 2000cm2 area, a drop of the core water level was extremely in comparison with main steam system LOCA, and the fuel assemblies were completely exposed during up to 30min. to the irrigation from approximately 100sec. after LOCA occurrence. Therefore, the fuel temperature during the irrigation had reached approximately 1900℃. Thus, the fuel cladding were damaged approximately less than 10%, and H2 concentration in the containment vessel was approximately 9% which did not exceed H2 detonation limit of 13% but exceeded H2 explosion limit of 4%. However, the containment vessel internal pressure was settled around design pressure value of containment vessel. As the results, some core damage could not be avoided, but soundness of the containment vessel, which should take the role of "confine", was found to be secured.departmental bulletin pape
Effects in Programming Education with Actual Robots Control Using Scratch
Recently, the ICT(Information and Communication Technology) engineers' workforce shortage has been occurred with the development of ICT progress. And in the new educational guideline of Japan, the learning contents about ICT have been extended. Along with this, effective teaching materials for learning programming are demanded. In this study, we constructed a programming learning environment which can control the actual robots using Scratch developed at MIT. And we verified the effects of the experience learning using the environment by the analysis of the questionnaire results. And by the results, it was confirmed that this environment is possible to improve the learning effect for any students regardless whether who likes originally computer operation or not.departmental bulletin pape
Effects in “Introduction to Psychology" ClassII: Could Students Maintain Metacognitive Skills?
This study examined the effect of implementation to enhance and maintain metacognitive skills for students who had taken “Introduction to Psychology" class for freshmen. In the follow-up study had about one year after the class had finished, the results of the implementing group demonstrated significantly higher level of stress management self-efficacy scales than the control group. Also, the metacognitive skills scales of the implementing group indicated marginally significant results higher at follow-up test than at pre-test. From the results, it suggested that it is necessary to design and implement the teaching materials and method for enhancing students' metacognitive skills and efforts to maintain the effects of the implementation.departmental bulletin pape
Removal of Heavy Metals inWastewater with Polyglutamic Acid as a Flocculating Agent
The flocculation method with polyglutamic acid was applied in order to remove heavy metals in wastewater. Removal efficiency more than ca. 90% was obtained for metals of chromium, copper, iron and zinc, while that of manganese (Mn) was only ca. 50%. Therefore, in the present study, a combined method of flocculation and coprecipitation with iron hydroxide was attempted to increase the removal efficiency of Mn. An ion exchange method was also applied for a comparison. For the combined method of flocculation and coprecipitation, the removal efficiency of almost 100% was accomplished at the wide pH range from 7 to 12, although that value decreased negligibly at pH 6. On the other hand, for the ion exchange method, the removal efficiency became higher as pH became lower. The maximum value (93%) was obtained at pH 3. The combined method of flocculation and coprecipitation was found to be useful for removing Mn in wastewater.departmental bulletin pape
