Two-Photon Ionization of Pyrene in the Presence of Cyclodextrin
We investigated the two-photon ionization (TPI) of Pyrene (Py) in the presence of cyclodextrins (CDs) by using 266-nm laser pulse irradiation. The formation of the incorporation complex of Py/CD was confirmed by 1H NMR measurement. TPI of Py within the laser flash (5 ns) generated a radical cation of Py and hydrated electrons. The ionization quantum yield (Φion) of Py in the presence of α-CD and γ-CD (1.0 × 10-2 M) was calculated to be 64.6 ±1.1%, 0.5 ± 0.1%, respectively. On the other hand, the Φion of Py could not calculated in the presence of β-CD. We concluded that these results were attributed to the decrease of the concentration of singlet excited state by excimer formation and stabilization energy arising from solvation, which was affected by the area of Py protruding from the cavity of the CD. When the concentration of CD was lowered to 1.0 × 10-3 M, the Φion of Py was affected by the fluorescence lifetime, the stabilization energy of salvation, and the excimer formation. As a result, we found that the TPI of Py in the presence of CD were influenced to the fluorescence lifetime, the stabilization energy of salvation, and the excimer formation.departmental bulletin pape
Tertiary-level English Education in Japan:A Study on Motivational Factors
The complex processes involved in learning a second language include a multitude of cognitive and affective factors. One of these affective factors, motivation, has been suggested to be the most important element in learning, which influences the degree to which a second language will be acquired. This has made its study one of the most exciting and promising areas of research in second language acquisition over the past few decades. This study examined the motivations of a group of university students in Japan in regards to English education. Two groups (high and low proficiency) of first-year students (N= 85) were tested on four types of intrinsic motivation (interest in the English language, cultural interest, attitude towards learning English, and ethnocentrism). Correlational relationships were measured, with only ethnocentrism found to have a (small) statistically significant correlation with proficiency.departmental bulletin pape
Measurement of Influence for Users in Social Networks
In this paper, a new measurement in directed networks is proposed. Our measurement provides an evaluation of each edges as influence in consideration of not only the number of incoming edges to a referred vertex but also outgoing edges from a referring vertex under setting assumptions. These assumptions are quite reasonable to compare the influence of the various vertices in the directed network. The index quantified by the measurement of influence is called “Weighted Distance". The concept of our measurement is that lower value in Weighted Distance means higher degree of influence. In addition, we explain about the properties of our measurement by proofs and a numerical example. Furthermore, the use of our measurement and the outlook of our research are mentioned later.departmental bulletin pape
departmental bulletin pape
A Comparison of Japanese Proverbs and British Proverbs Relating to Weather Prediction and Analysis of the Application of these Proverbs to “the Period for Integrated Study".
This paper undertakes a comparison of weather proverbs in Japan and Great Britain focusing on weather proverbs which have a scientifically applicable background. Proverbs relating specifically to animals were prevalent in both countries which allows for an interesting and contrasting view. These proverbs prove to show the depth of human interaction with nature and how distinct and distant cultures can come to the same conclusions based on observation of the facts. It is proposed that this study can be developed into useful teaching materials.departmental bulletin pape
Effects of Thermal Pretreatment and High-Solids on Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge
This study examined the effects of thermal pretreatment of excess sludge and high-solids influent on the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. The thermal pretreatment (130℃ and 1 hour) improved VS destruction and gas production by several percent, but color intensity of digested sludge was enhanced. The performance of anaerobic digesters were depressed by the increased concentration of influent sewage sludge, especially at TS 9-10% influent. The ammonia concentration of the digested sludge was not very high so that physical accessibility of microorganisms to sewage sludge appears to be responsible. This is supported by a batch test, in which the coagulant for sludge thickening delayed the gas production.departmental bulletin pape
Optimal Maintenance Strategy for Bridge Long Life Span Considering Practical Usefulness
In this study, a useful BMS is developed for practical bridge management. The life cycle cost for each bridge is calculated by assuming the repair works and cost, and using the deterioration transfer curves for slab, girder and abutment. The most economical repair plan is determined by comparing the life cycle costs for nine cases considering the annual budget limit. The effectiveness and practical usefulness of the system are illustrated by applying it to the bridge management of 2423 bridges in Fukui prefecture. It is clear that the proposed BMS can determine the most economical repair plan considering the repair of whole bridge system. Furthermore, it is also demonstrated that the BMS can determine the best annual budget considering the economy and safety as well as the most economical repair plan for each bridge.departmental bulletin pape
Using the Wingate Test to Identify Time-Series-based Relations between the Ankle Joint Flexibility and Kick Speed
In this study, we examined the Wingate Test in conjunction with ankle joint flexibility and kick speed for 11 athletes. In the Wingate Test, we calculated the peak revolutions and peak power values of six sections by dividing each of these measurements by five seconds. Moreover, we measured the kick speed in each section by dividing 45 m of a long-course swimming pool (excluding the initial five meters) into six sections, each of which measured 7.5 m. With this information, we calculated the correlation coefficient between the range of motion of ankle joint and the kick speed for each section; we also calculated the correlation coefficient between the peak revolutions and the average power values via the Wingate Test as well as the kick speed for each section. We found a significant correlation between the range of motion of ankle joint and the kick speed in sections one, two, four, five, and six. Furthermore, we found a significant correlation between peak revolutions and kick speed in the first four sections of the Wingate Test. Therefore, we conclude that the instantaneous power exhibition in which the legs are moved quickly, i.e., peak revolutions, correlate to the kick speed, which is close to the top speed immediately after the start to middle stage; however, in situations where kick speed is maintained in the latter half, it is correlated to the flexibility of ankle joints.departmental bulletin pape
Detection Methods of Asian Dust and PM2.5 by Using MODIS Data -Their Applications to Asian Dust Events Which Aggravated Respiratory Symptoms in Western Japan in May 2011-
Asian dust (i.e., dust and sandstorm: DSS) is a phenomenon that wind-borne soil and mineral particles are raised thousands of meters into the air in arid and semi-arid regions of China and Mongolia, and is carried by westerly winds and sometimes reaches Japan. The PM2.5 air pollution is often generated in urban and industrial areas of China recently, and sometimes flows into Japan. DSS and PM2.5 affect the human health. DSS can be detected by using AVI method of the satellite remote sensing technique. AVI is defined as AVI=T12-T11, where T12 and T11 are the brightness temperatures at 12μm and 11μm wave lengths, respectively. For MODIS data, T12 and T11 correspond to band32 and band31, respectively. PM2.5 can be detected by using the proposed method {R, G, B = band10, band 9, T11}. In this paper, these methods apply to the DSS events which aggravated Respiratory Symptoms (Asthma) in Western Japan in May 2011.departmental bulletin pape
About the Southeast Asia Chinese Literature and "Anti-fascism"
Last year in China, there were a lot of commemorative activities to celebrate the “70th anniversary of the victory of the anti-fascism". Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping participated in the military parade which was held to celebrate the “70th anniversary of the victory of the anti-fascism". Even for Japanese, it is still a fresh memory. This is also reflected on various ceremonies in China. The author of this article is a member of the Southeast Asia Chinese Literature Research Society. The seminars of the research were held last year as “the Forum of Southeast Asia Anti-fascist Literature in Chinese, and for the 11th Southeast Asia Chinese Literature Symposium. The seminar started with the comment “China and the Southeast Asia shared the sufferings of the anti-Japanese".For most of the Japanese, it is necessary to realize that China has been trying hard to share the “historical consciousness" with the surrounding countries obviously in recent years.departmental bulletin pape
