On the Development of the Complement of the Verb clean
The verb clean, one of the representative verbs of removal, is a locative alternation verb. In this paper we investigate the development of the complement of the verb based upon data gathered from EEBO (Early English Books Online) and COHA (The Corpus of Historical American English) and divide the complement of the verb into four types: (a) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (CN), (b) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION of NP-LOCATUM (AN), (c) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATUM from NP-LOCATION, (d) NP-AGENT V NP-LOCATION from NP-LOCATUM, among which type (b) did not develop in the history of the English language, which has much to do with the semantic rivalry between clean and cleanse.departmental bulletin pape

This paper was study of the samurai residences of the ISONO-Tamiya family and SHIBUYA-Gonzaemon family, former Matsuoka clan members. Both families lived in Osensui-Machi, the residential district of the senior samurai, for about 140 years after moving to Fukui Castle Town. Both the ISONO-Tamiya and SHIBUYA-Gonzaemon families serve as YORIAI-SEKI in the Fukui Clan. Both families were adjacent to each other in both Matsuoka and Fukui castle towns, with the Isono-Tamiya family to the north and the Shibuya-Gonzaemon family to the south.departmental bulletin pape
Effects of Fuel Injection Timing on Operation Characteristics of Small Diesel Engines with EGR Using BDF
The biofuel used in diesel engines (BDF) has a higher kinematic viscosity and ignition point than gas oil. Therefore, it is considered to be disadvantageous for fuel injection systems. The purpose of the study we conducted was to understand the effects of oxygen in fuel in the combustion process of diesel engines. To this end, engine performance testing using BDF and gas oil was performed. As a result, although there was a difference in the exhaust gas characteristics between using gas oil and using BDF, the brake thermal efficiencies of both were the same. Therefore, there is a possibility that the differences in combustion conditions during the combustion period do not significantly affect the engine output generation. This study conducted a performance test of changing the fuel injection timing using gas oil and BDF in a small diesel engine, confirming the effects of fuel ignitability on the ignition delay.departmental bulletin pape
A straightforward method for evaluating the foot posture of non-soccer players during instep kicking
It is known that non-soccer players demonstrate varying foot postures while performing an instep kick. Since different instruction methods are required depending on the foot posture, it is crucial to quantitatively evaluate the foot posture during the instep kick and categorize the pattern. This study investigated the possibility of evaluating the foot posture during an instep kick using a single video camera.
The study involved 34 non-soccer and 15 soccer players who were instructed to kick the ball toward a net by an instep kick. A high-speed camera was positioned behind the subjects at the same height as the ball to record the image of the foot at the moment of impact. Using the images, we acquired data on the ratio of the sole area and the inclination of the foot at the moment of impact and attempted to categorize the foot posture. The results revealed that the foot posture could be classified into various patterns using the ratio of the sole area and the inclination of the foot. This method enabled a straightforward evaluation of foot posture with merely a single video camera; thus, it is expected to be a convenient tool in the coaching field.departmental bulletin pape
Investigation of a field test to assess physical fitness factors related to speed endurance in sprinters.
The purpose of this study was to investigate a field test to assess physical fitness factors related to speed endurance in sprinters. Sixteen university sprinters and jumpers were asked to perform a 300 m sprint, a continuous jump test and various tests of athletic ability, and the relationship between the rate of speed maintenance in the 300 m sprint and the various tests was investigated. The main results were as follows: (1) The running speed in the 300 m sprint peaked in the 50-100 m section and then decreased; the 300 m speed maintenance rate was 82.5 ± 4.2%. (2) The jump height in the continuous jump test showed a peak in the 1-5th jumps and decreased thereafter. The jump height maintenance rate in the continuous jump test was 83.5 ± 5.2%. (3) No significant correlations were found between the 300 m running speed maintenance rate and the jump height maintenance rate in the continuous jump test or any of the physical fitness factors. These results suggest that the method of the continuous jump test should be improved to assess the physical fitness related to speed endurance in sprinters.departmental bulletin pape
Investigation of Applicability to Accident Tolerant Fuel (SiC cladding)
In the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, nuclear fission reaction was stopped successfully after the earthquake. However, due to the failure of cooling by the station blackout, the cladding temperature rose and the cladding reacted with high-temperature steam, causing a hydrogen explosion, scattering radioactive materials over a wide area and injuring many residents. After this accident, many countries around the world started to develop cladding materials that do not generate hydrogen or generate little hydrogen even at high temperatures. Silicon carbide is one of the new cladding material candidates. It hardly reacts with high-temperature steam, and its melting point is much higher (2730℃) than the melting point (1852℃) of Zircaloy, the current cladding material. Moreover, the thermal neutron absorption cross-section is smaller than that of the Zircaloy alloy, and it is superior in terms of nuclear performance. On the other hand, since silicon carbide is a ceramic, when the diameter of the uranium dioxide pellet increases due to swelling at high burnup, the effect of pellet-cladding interaction (PCI) is a concern. In this study, the fuel behavior analysis code FEMAXI-8 was used to quantify the interaction between the uranium dioxide pellets and the SiC cladding at high burnup. It was confirmed that the cladding stress increased sharply when it exceeded over 70GWd/tU. Although the cladding stress is below the yield strength, it was understood that it is necessary to change the dimensions, shape, and material of fuel so that PCI does not become excessive in fuel design.departmental bulletin pape
Investigation of Applicability to High Burnup of Small Modular Reactor Fuel
Recently, Small Modular Reactor has been investigated as a candidate of future reactor, which is safer and more economical than present reactor, in the world. Since the SMR is intended for use in remote areas where the power grid is not well developed, long-term operation without refueling, that is, high burnup of fuel is desirable. Therefore, the introduction of fuel enriched to about 20wt% is being considered. However, in a previous study, a rapid increase in the FP gas release rate was confirmed in the behavior analysis of high burnup fuel of 120 GWd/tU, suggesting that suppression of FP gas emission is the key to achieving long-term operation. On the other hand, considering the operation of SMR in areas where the power grid is well developed, it is expected to play a role in promoting carbon-free power generation by replacing thermal power generation by performing load-following operation in combination with renewable energy. However, in this case, it is necessary to confirm that the load fluctuation to the fuel caused by load-following operation does not cause fatigue failure. Since both problems are caused by burning SMR fuel to high burnup, this study focused on evaluation of FP gas release and fatigue under load-following operation. This study showed FP gas behavior in high burnup and that FP gas release can be reduced by increasing UO₂ grain size. Furthermore, this study also showed that daily load following operation doesn’t cause fatigue failure on SMR fuel.departmental bulletin pape
Effect of fatigue on rowing motion during a 2-min full-power rowing on a canoe ergometer
In canoe sprint, it is important to maintain an optimum motion from the start to the end. Therefore, it is essential to continuously evaluate the rowing technique and identify tendencies in motion changes to understand the points to keep good motion even during periods of fatigue. This study aimed to investigate changes in motion resulting from fatigue during a 2-min full-power rowing on a canoe ergometer.
The study involved five male kayakers from a university canoe club. A high-speed camera was installed on the side of the ergometer for recording the rowing motion and we acquired positional coordinate data of the shaft tip for duration of 2 min. Subsequently, the time when the velocity of the shaft tip starts to decrease was defined as “catch,” and the time when the velocity of the shaft tip starts to increase was defined as “pull end.” According to this definition, we analyzed the rowing motion over the 2-min duration.
The results revealed that the shaft angle decreased and the shaft tip position became farther and higher at the “catch” for the latter half of the rowing motion. In addition, the shaft tip position became lower and shaft tip velocity decreased at the “pull end” for the latter half, and the time between the “catch” and the “pull end” extended.departmental bulletin pape
Optimal Design of Pose-tensioned T-girder Bridges
Post-tensioned T-girder (PCT) bridges are the most commonly constructed types of bridges. The design process for this type of bridge is carried out on the basis of minor modifications of the standard design collections proposed by the Civil Engineering Research Institute. In this study, the cross-section of the PCT girder bridge is optimized using the particle swarm method (PSO), and the economic efficiency is discussed by comparing with the standard design.departmental bulletin pape
