Morphological Characteristics of the Lateral Abdominal Muscles in Athletes

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the morphological characteristics of the lateral abdominal muscles of university athletes who participate in competitions that involve frequent torsional motion. The subjects were 16 male university athletes (athletic group; five from the baseball club, three from the canoe club, and eight from the tennis club) and 19ordinary university students (non-athletic group). The lateral abdominal muscles (external oblique muscle, internal oblique muscle, and transverse muscle) were measured for muscle thickness using B-mode ultrasonography. Comparison of the athletic and non-athletic groups revealed a significant difference in the external and internal oblique muscles, both of which were thicker in the athletic group compared to the non-athletic group. No significant difference was seen in the transverse muscle. The calculated effect size was significantly larger in the internal oblique muscle compared to the external oblique muscle. Marked development of the abdominal oblique muscles, especially the internal oblique muscle, was found to be a morphological characteristic of the lateral abdominal muscles of athletes who participate in competitions that mainly involve torsional motion.departmental bulletin pape

Environmental Efforts Made by Kirin Holdings Company Ltd. – Reasons of Ranking First for Global Warming Countermeasures in Japanese Food Industry –

    Get PDF
In this paper, the authors drew attention to “Japanese Food Company Ranking for Global Warming Countermeasures" recently published by WWF Japan. Especially, the countermeasures against global warming was discussed on, by particularizing Kirin Holdings Company Ltd. ranked first in the ranking. Comparing with Kirin Holdings and the other companies, the authors grappled with the difference of ranking. Furthermore, multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between main investments (cumulated amounts) on environmental protection and current earnings in this company. The result of regression analysis suggests that some investments significantly affect the current earnings.departmental bulletin pape

A Survey of Private Japanese University Students' Attitudes Towards English Education

    Get PDF
Motivation researchers have suggested a multitude of constructs, each of which propose that there are several forces residing within a person that drive them to do the things they do, all of which have varying implications when it comes to learning a second language. This study, following Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System construct of motivation, investigated a group of 85 university students in Japan, currently studying English. As part of a larger project using mixed methods and various angles of investigation, this study used qualitative measures (one-on-one interviews) to elicit personalized and individual responses from the participants. Upon analysis of the interview data, it was revealed that a plurality of the participants were motivated to learn English for reasons Dörnyei calls the Ought-to L2 Self, i.e., they believed they should study to “meet expectations or to avoid possible negative outcomes" (Dörnyei, 2010b, p. 80).departmental bulletin pape

An Experimental Study of the Performance of Stakes to Prevent Bridges by Driftwood and Rubble

    Get PDF
Stakes that has installed in the traditional bridges like Uji-bridge and Togetsu-bridge, have long been used to prevent the stricture of bridges. However, stakes design codes are not established. And little is known about the function of these stakes. In this paper, we focus on the function and performance of stake, and we demonstrate a fundamental experiment. It was found that driftwood passes between piers after rotation about the stake. Consequently, it is approached that stakes should be installed at bridges to divert both driftwood and protect the bridge.departmental bulletin pape

Relations between Air-Fuel Ratio and Dynamic Performance of Small Race Cars

    Get PDF
'It goes without saying that engine output power characteristics greatly affect the dynamic performance of the race car. One of the methods of changing the output power of the engine is to adjust the set amount of fuel supply. This method changes the air-fuel ratio of the air fuel mixture supplied to the engine. In this study, a slalom test run of a small race car was used to examine dynamic performance with attention to the air-fuel ratio changed by adjusting the set amount of fuel supply. The results led to the proposal of shortening the running time of the small race car by measuring the average air-fuel ratio in the target running section.departmental bulletin pape

Development of the Gel Indicator Using PVA and KI

    Get PDF
In recent years, use of radiation beams or particle beams have been put to practical use for cancer therapy. In cancer radiation therapy, visualization of radiation patterns is absolutely necessary for precisely evaluating the dose distribution. In this study, we developed a new type of gel dosimeter using a doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based solution. We irradiated different gel samples with X-rays from a Hitachi MBR-1520R-3 source under different configurations to test the gel performance. We used UV-VIS spectrometry to measure the absorbance of transmitted light through the gel. The absorbance had a peak in the vicinity wavelength of 490nm. The results confirmed the absorbance to be proportional for increasing applied dose. In summary, a color transition gel was developed for use in detecting irradiation dose from X-rays. This technique has potential application for visualization of dose during medical procedures.departmental bulletin pape

Maegawa Traditional House in Kinome Mountain pass

    Get PDF
This article is a report of the findings in a house of the Maegawas located on the Kinome mountain pass of Tsuruga-city. Hokurikudo way through along the Kinome mountain pass for a long time and this place was the doorway of the Echizen district. The household of Maegawas acted as the post called Otyayaban of the Fukui feudal clan and kept watching the passers of the Hokurikudo way. Maegawas house have the traditional room called Gyokuza where the Fukui feudal lord take a break. We clarified the following things through the investigation this house, 1) Maegawas house was built in the middle of the Edo era, 2) Maegawas house is the valuable historic house which exist in the descript of Fukui prefecture.departmental bulletin pape

Rain Stock – Urban Development for Keeping Rainwater – Movie Created to Explain the Word "Rain Stock"

    Get PDF
A movie has been created to explain the word “rain stock," which is technically “rainwater harvesting," according to the Architectural Institute of Japan Environmental Standards. The movie, titled “Rain Stock - Urban Development for Keeping Rainwater," is available on YouTube. Creation of the movie started in December 2015 after stages of technical advice by the Sub Committee for Promotion of Rainwater Harvesting, Architectural Institute of Japan. The movie was uploaded to YouTube in June 2016.We managed the creative process from the storyboard illustration and narration recording to the launch of an open YouTube channel with an English subtitled version in January 2017 to attract more viewers.departmental bulletin pape

An Attempt to Improve the Measurement Precision in Tungsten-Filament Electrothermal Vaporization / ICP-Mass Spectrometry for the Determination of Trace Phosphor

    Get PDF
In order to improve the measurement precision in tungsten-filament electrothermal vaporization (WF-ETV) / inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the determination of trace phosphor, we attempted the application of an internal standard method. The delay time between the discharge of a capacitor in the WF-ETV system and the start of measurement in ICP-MS was optimized for the simultaneous measurement of several elements. Operating parameters for WF-ETV were investigated to obtain appropriate intensities of phosphor, and consequently the optimum values of electric current for desolvation and sample volume became 3.3 A and 3.0 L, respectively. While relative standard deviation (RSD) of intensities of phosphor more than 50% was improved to 17% by correcting with those of cobalt as an internal standard element, the improved RSD was almost the same as the value obtained before. It was found that more detailed studies for selecting suitable internal standard elements were needed to improve the reproducibility of WF-ETV / ICP-MS.departmental bulletin pape
