    Public Relations Activities for the Goto Islands: Akashima Activation Project Utilizing Rainwater Harvesting

    Akashima is a small island in Goto City, Nagasaki prefecture. Inhabitants of this island depend on stored rainwater for survival. Activation of the island is difficult because only rain water saved by each household can be used. In the summer of 2017, we began activating the island by making facilities to save rain water. We named these activities "Shimaame Lab", and in addition to creating logo designs, websites, YouTube channels, and Facebook pages, we published images on Google Street View. Using an analysis tool revealed that users who are interested in education, fishing, and natural environment access the media most frequently.departmental bulletin pape

    Utilization of ICT in Physical Education Classes ? Using a Heart Rate Sensor and Tablet ?

    In this report, we introduce an example of a lesson practice where a small heart rate sensor and tablet are utilized. In a simulated physical education class for high school students, we conducted a shuttle run test with the aim of discerning exercise intensity and physical burden. Runners were fitted with a heartbeat sensor, with their heart rates monitored in real time on the tablet. A projector was used to project these data on a screen, helping us to visualize heart rate changes. In addition to showing an interest in the relationship between running speed and physiological burden, students who participated in the class also demonstrated curiosity with regard to a variety of other facets of the research, including the measuring instruments themselves and data analysis using PCs.departmental bulletin pape

    Survey on Rainwater Usage in Akashima, Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture

    Akashima is a small island located in the Go to Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture. The island area is 0.52 km2. Only 18 people reside here. As there are no water facilities on the island, the islanders live off rainwater. In summer 2017, Kasai laboratory and Kondo laboratory of Fukui University of Technology have begun the “Akashima activation project." We investigated the water quality in the rainwater tanks on the island and the islanders' water consumption. The stored rainwater's pH, hardness, and electric conductivity values were higher due to the dissolution of alkaline components from the concrete storage tanks. In addition, a bacteria examination of the stored rainwater detected E. coli in several storage tanks. Therefore, it was not suitable for drinking.     Relationship between Selective Response Ability and Motor Abilities Involving Stepping Motion of the Legs

    The purpose of this study was to elucidate the relationships between the choice reaction times and the physical fitness in preschool children using the stepping motion of the legs. Twenty-eight healthy preschool children (16 boys, 12 girls) underwent a selective response time test (even condition, winning condition, lose condition) and a physical fitness test to examine the relationship among their performances in both tests. The rock-paper-scissors measurement device (original model; Takei Scientific Instruments Co., Ltd., Niigata, Japan) developed for measuring the selective response time in preschool children displays drawings of rock, scissors, or paper on the monitor and measures the response time that children take to step on the corresponding sheet with accuracy to one-hundredth of a second. Five trials were conducted for each of the three conditions: even, winning, and losing. Excluding both maximum and minimum values, the average time recorded for the remaining three trials were used as evaluation parameters. The physical fitness test (softball throwing, side step test, and whole body reaction time) were also measured. The Pearson's cumulative partial correlation coefficient was used for statistical analysis, and the level of statistical significance was set at 5%.0The results revealed no significant relationships among all physical fitness parameters in the even condition. The winning condition showed a moderate negative correlation with and softball throwing performance, and the lose condition showed a moderate negative correlation with the softball throwing performance (r=-0.447, -0.387, p<0.05)departmental bulletin pape

    "The Future Carnival of the Animals" is the name of the 20th Anniversary Commemorating Performance of the "Harmony Hall Fukui", held on September 23, 2017. Based on "The Carnival of the Animals", a masterpiece of French composer Saint-Saens, "The Future Carnival of the Animals" added new composed 16 tunes, and video animation had been projected synchronously to the music. The video was shot and produced by the students of Department of Design, Fukui University of Technology.     Selective Mono-Bromination of 2,2'-Bithiophene Using a Flow Microreactor

    Flow microreactors can provide a revolutionary change on organic synthesis, because of the following characteristic features derived from their small size and flow nature: 1) fast mixing, 2) temperature control, 3) highly strict control of reaction condition. By taking advantage of these feature, chemical reactions which are very difficult or impossible in flasks can be achieved in flow microreactors. We have applied this protocol to selective monobromination of 2,2'-bithiophene with N-bromosuccinimide. After various trials of controlling reaction conditions, the yield of the undesired di-brominated product (5,5'-dibromo-2,2'-bithiophene) could be reduced to 1-2%. The most important factor in the microflow system was the combination of the flow rate and the equivalent of N-bromosuccinimide.     Investigating Language Proficiency and Learning Style Preference

    Individual differences (ID) among language learners (e.g. language aptitude or motivation), are variables that are theorized to affect the degree of success one will have in acquiring a second language (L2). This study sought to add to the body of literature on learning style. 225first year students (divided into two groups based on English proficiency) at a private Japanese university were surveyed to determine their preferred learning style(s). The data obtained were then examined in relationship to the two groups' English proficiency to search for any statistically significant differences between the groups. It was found that the highest-and lowest-ranked learning styles (auditory learning and individual learning) were the same for both Group A (higher proficiency)and Group B (lower proficiency), but to a statistically significant degree of difference.departmental bulletin pape
