A Case Study of Writing Task Performance: Smartphone Input vs. Handwriting
Get PDFM-learning (mobile phone-based learning) is quickly becoming prevalent at educational institutions around the world. However, while there have been studies (though few and limited) examining the differences between typing on a computer vs. handwriting, there have been no similar studies investigating smartphone use. This is the first empirical study comparing performance on English writing tasks between the media of smartphones and handwriting, and also the first to investigate using different media for composition in a second language (L2). Writing samples submitted via both media were collected from 2 freshman English majors over a 14-week period and analyzed for word count. Results for both participants showed statistically significant decreases in production when using a smartphone to the effect sizes of d=-1.13and -2.34, respectively. This is a significant result that educators should be cognizant of when assigning online tasks. Implications for the classroom and possible ways to mitigate the negative effects of smartphone use are also discussed.departmental bulletin pape
Prototype-Construction of a PC Operated Choice Reaction Time Measurement System

The aging rate has continued to rise reaching 27.70n October 1, 2017. While timing-skill and choice reaction time significantly decreases with aging, physical training can help limit how quickly they decrease. In recent years, there has also been concern about the decline of physical strength in elementary school students. Therefore, effective physical training methods are necessary. With this information, Yokoya et al. (2014) devised a method of measuring reaction time using the Rock-Paper-Scissors game. However, the devised equipment has a few shortcomings including being mechanical, the need to be operated manually every time, and only being able to measure time. Experimental study on the impact oscillations between a two-degree-of-freedom system and a sinusoidally vibrating plate
Get PDFWe take up the impact oscillations between a spring-supported mass system and a sinusoidally vibrating plate. The impact oscillations on 1 D.O.F. (degree-of-freedom) system subjected to the sinusoidally vibrating plate has been theoretically investigated. From these studies, it is shown that the impact oscillations experience the periodic doubling bifurcations and the chaotic vibrations. First, we conducted the experiment on the 1 D.O.F system subjected to the sinusoidal vibrating plate to confirm these nonlinear features. Next, the experiments are conducted to clarify the nonlinear features on the 2 D.O.F system subjected to the sinusoidal plate. Effect of Shear Span Ratio on Precast Reinforced Concrete Core Walls with Parameter of Quantity of Horizontal Tied Rebar and Cotter

In this study, lateral loading tests were conducted on wall columns simulating the corner and the area near the corner of an L-shaped core wall with horizontal tied rebars. The specimen consisted of four square-section precast columns. The vertical joints between the precast columns were grouted with high-strength mortar. Each precast column had cotters at the vertical joint, and horizontal tied rebars were concentrated at the second and the mid height level of the first story. Based on comparing the results of lateral loading tests of the specimen PC3 and PC4 of shear span ratio 2.4 and the specimen PCS3 and PCS4 of shear span ratio 1.4, the effect of shear span ratio was clarified. Development of Water-Level Gauge for Small-Scale Rainwater Storage Tank
Get PDFIn this study, we conducted an evaluation experiment of a water-level gauge to be installed in a small-scale rainwater storage tank. Two types of water-level gauges were evaluated, namely, capacitance type (Texas Instruments : FDC2214EVM) and pressure type (Interlink Electronics Inc.: FSR series). The experiment was conducted using a simulated tank made of VU150 PVC pipe. The water-level gauge readings were recorded on an SD card using Arduino UNO. The evaluation was based on the correlation between the measured water level, and water-level gauge measured value, and also based on long-term stability of the water-level gauge measured value. The results demonstrate that the capacitance-type water-level gauge has a higher performance than the pressure-type water-level gauge.departmental bulletin pape
Effects of Wearing a Compression Undershirt on Body Composition:the case of wearing for two weeks at low frequency
Get PDFA large number of compression undershirts have been produced on a commercial basis and these have been reported to have healthy effects. Although these healthy effects are reported about body composition, the effects have not been revealed by any scientific research. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to clarify the effects of wearing compression undershirts on body composition. The variables determined in this study were the following: percent body fat (0.000000at), body fat (Fat), 0.000000at and Fat values in right and left legs and feet and right and left arm sand hands, lean body mass (LBM), muscle mass, body mass index (BMI), body weight, blood pressure and pulse rate during rest and amount of physical activity. The results were that none of these variables showed any beneficial effect from the wearing of compression undershirt. The reason why significant difference was not found is probably that the experiment period, two weeks, was too short and the stimulation by the upper body of the short-sleeved compression undershirt was too weak. In the next study subjects are going to wear a long-sleeved compression undershirt and a compression tights for either six or eight weeks. Student SLA Beliefs at Two Japanese High Schools
Get PDFThis paper compares the beliefs about second-language acquisition (SLA) of students at two different senior high schools in Japan. Participants were surveyed about behaviorist, innatist, and cognitive/developmentalist theories of SLA. Questionnaire data was then analyzed to compare the differences between the two groups of students as well as determine discrepancies between respondents' beliefs and SLA theories. Results indicate that both schools hold very different beliefs about several SLA theories. These results provide a useful insight into the respondents' language learning beliefs which could be used to better inform the teaching styles used and decisions made in both the secondary and tertiary classroom.departmental bulletin pape
A Revitalization Program for Akashima in the Goto Islands, Nagasaki Prefecture -A Comparison of the Facebook Total Access Account of this year with that of Last Year-
Get PDFAkashima is a small island in Goto city, Nagasaki Prefecture. Inhabitants of this island depend on stored rainwater for survival. Revitalization of the island is difficult as the only source of water on the island is the rainwater stored by each household. In the summer of 2017, we began revitalizing the island by developing new facilities for rainwater harvesting. This also included disclosing information related to our activities in real time on our Facebook page. An analysis of the Facebook page shows that it is possible to publicize our efforts more efficiently now than in 2017, and that the page is being accessed by residents of Goto city and local governments with increasing frequency.departmental bulletin pape

The Survey of Physical Fitness and Living Conditions in High School Students ? Utilizing the High School/University Collaboration "Health Education Program" ?
Get PDFWe surveyed physical fitness and living conditions in 44 students in the second year of high school. A simple questionnaire was used to determine living conditions. Hemoglobin level and estimated maximum oxygen consumption were determined using noninvasive methods. Exercise and sports activity levels tended to be lower than in others in the same age group. There was a high rate of skipping breakfast. The number of hours of sleep and media use was similar to that of others in the same age group. Despite being a physically inactive population, the students showed high aerobic work capacity. The noninvasive measurement of hemoglobin levels was helpful for anemia screening and estimation of nutritional status. Our results suggest that such measurements and surveys can be effective in determining student health status. The findings can be used to promote health education in schools.departmental bulletin pape
