These results indicate that it is necessary to instruct students in improving flexibility and to gain the dietary habit of eating breakfast for female students.departmental bulletin pape

Defining and Assessing Global Competence: Recommendations from a Qualitative Instrumental Single Case Study at a Japanese University

    Get PDF
Japan's society is dealing with many compounding issues that are forcing the way in which businesses, government, and higher education coordinate and operate with each other. Businesses are demanding more from universities in the form of global human resources ready compete in a vigorous international market. Universities are not entirely ready to make the changes necessary to push the students to excel in the needed areas. The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MEXT)has been using various grant programs to encourage universities –small and large; national, private, and public –to innovate and respond to globalization with internationalization programs that meet the socioeconomic challenges Japan faces. In this paper, the author describes this landscape using the case of a single Japanese university that received grant money from MEXT so that it could create the necessary curriculum changes that would set it up for future program development. This case highlights the need to understand the idea of global competence and how to assess the skills and traits businesses have been demanding. An approach to assessing global competence will be presented as well as recommendations for how Japanese universities, government institutions, and businesses can move forward with the training of the global jinzai (global human resources) that the nation desperately needs at this pivotal time in its history.departmental bulletin pape

Utilization of 20-meter Shuttle Run Test to Find the Optimum Running Paces

    Get PDF
In this report, we introduce an example of a lesson practice where a small heart rate sensor and tablet are utilized. In a simulated physical education class for high school students, we conducted a shuttle run test with the aim of discerning exercise intensity and physical burden. Runners were fitted with a heartbeat sensor, with their heart rates monitored in real time on the tablet. A projector was used to project these data on a screen, helping us to visualize heart rate changes. In addition to showing an interest in the relationship between running speed and physiological burden, students who participated in the class also demonstrated curiosity with regard to a variety of other facets of the research, including the measuring instruments themselves and data analysis using PCs.departmental bulletin pape

    To deepen students' learning.

    Get PDF
In university classes emphasis is often placed on active learning, and in particular, research focuses on educational activities that have students using educational materials by themselves to actively learn. However, in the revision of elementary and junior high school curriculum the term active learning lacks depth. Active learning must also mean initiative, interactive, and deep learning. This is from the position that learning “deeply" is important to learning, and from the active learning prospective there is a lack of “deep learning". As a key to deepening learning, emphasis should be placed on the acquisition of “views and ideas", according to the characteristics of each subject. Deep learning should be taking place in university however it needs to be part of the general education curriculum from the first-year. At our university first-year students have the opportunity to enroll in general education courses which includes an introduction to philosophy course. In this course problems students faced in their lives were used as learning activities. This was done in an easy-to-understand manner by making students aware of the problems, using shuttle notes, presenting other students' opinions, keep students thinking, and in the end make the students realize it is important to make a habit of solving their own problems. Students expressed positive feedback to this course over the 8 times it was offered in 4 years, therefore we will continue to give these lectures.departmental bulletin pape

Studies on Aerial Handwritten Character Recognition Using Machine Learning

    Get PDF
This paper presents a method to recognize a character handwritten in the air. We had prototyped an aerial handwritten hiragana character recognition system that detect single character period by hovering in the air using DP (dynamic programming) matching. In this time, we investigate an aerial handwritten character recognition system using machine learning. We use two features, vector and picture. Feature of vector is relative direction of handwriting information. It is a time series information so we use LSTM (Long Short Term Memory) to learn data of characters. Feature of picture is absolutely handwriting information. We use CNN (Convolution Neural Network) to learn data of characters, because this model is suitable for picture recognize. We compared correct recognition rate of using LSTM and using CNN. We estimated features of both methods.departmental bulletin pape

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and to analyze related microbial consortia of digested sludge. The pretreatment employed concentration (8-9%) and thermal treatment (130℃, 1 hour) of the waste activated sludge portion. The experimental results showed that the pretreatment improve volatile solids destruction by 7 0x0.00000f65b62e9p-1022nd gas production by 13%.0 The thermal treatment, however, produced more colored substances, and slightly deteriorated the dewaterability of digested sludge. The microbial analysis revealed that limited varieties of both bacteria and archaeal domain may be responsible for major metabolic pathways in the sludge digestion.departmental bulletin pape

    Get PDF
This study aimed to quantitatively clarify the motion of subjects with high-level soccer juggling skills. The participants were 36 male university students who were not members of the soccer club. They underwent a juggling test (20 consecutive times) using only the instep area of the foot. Seven subjects who never dropped the ball were classified as the Lif_high group; eight subjects who dropped the ball 10 times or more were categorized as the Lif_low group. Based on video recordings of the participants, the lower-limb motion difference between the two groups was compared. The analysis results showed that subjects in the Lif_high group had less hip joint motion and mainly used knee joint motion to kick the ball.departmental bulletin pape
