Previous studies on strike counts and performance in baseball
The study aimed to review previous studies correlating the strike count with performance in baseball from the perspective of hitting the first strike. There are few studies on topics other than the striking motion. According to previous literature, hitting at an early count resulted in a higher hit rate. However, based on statistical analysis of previous studies, the high hit rate brought about by an early count was not significantly high.departmental bulletin pape
Gender differences in change of direction ability of 11-years old children
The purposes of this study were (a) to compare the change of direction ability (CODA) in 11-years-old boys and girls, and (b) to investigate relationships between CODA and body height, body weight, speed, leg power for both groups. Twenty-two boys aged 11 (11.4±0.2 years) and Twenty-six girls aged 11 (11.4±0.3 years) were tested. 505COD test, 20-m sprint running, counter movement jump (CMJ) and rebound jump (RJ) were applied. Boys achieved significantly better performances in COD Deficit and RJ index compared with girls. In boys, no significant correlation was observed between COD Deficit and other parameters. In girls, the correlation coefficient between the COD Deficit and RJ-index were significantly (Preferred leg: r = -0.502, p <0.01, Nonpreferred leg: r = -0.548, p<0.01). These results indicate that there are gender differences in CODA (COD Deficit) and reactive strength (RJ index) of 11-years-old children.departmental bulletin pape
Analyses of Typhoon No. 21 in October 2017 and Flood Disaster in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture by using Satellite Remote Sensing
Typhoon No. 21 in October 2017 was super-large and moved along the eastern coast of Japan with a strong force, causing wind and flood damages in various places from Shikoku to Tohoku region. In Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, there were many damages caused by flooding, such as the collapse of the Jinzuu River embankment in the early morning of October 23. Cloud top altitudes of the typhoon are calculated by using MODIS temperature images to estimate its strength. Using ASTER satellite data (15m resolution) and Sentinel-2 satellite data (10m resolution), the NDVI difference image is created to detect the location of damage caused by flooding in Sabae City.departmental bulletin pape
Interest Learning and Ingenuity in Toys
With the revision of the School Education Law in 2007, Article 30 lays (1) out the attitude of so-called academic ability to actively engage in learning. Three pillars of qualification and ability are laid out, with the ability to move towards “Manabi" (or learning) as being one of them. When actually conducting education, it is very important for the learner to be able to be in a state in which he/she can continue learning even if the state was created by the teacher. With that mind, this paper discusses the learning environments of young children, students in America and Japan, and graduate students to show that learning takes place in an environment where the learner is comfortable, able to have fun, and have meaningfully problems to solve while learning.departmental bulletin pape
Deterioration Characteristics for Bridges in Fukui Prefecture under Conditions of General Environment, Salt Damage, ASR and Freezing Damage
The deterioration characteristics of bridges have been clarified with progress of inspection of bridges in Fukui prefecture. In this study, the deterioration transfer curves of member elements are introduced for the bridges in Fukui prefecture under conditions of general environment, salt damage, ASR and freezing damage. The differences of characteristics are discussed for bridge types under several conditions. The geographical deterioration characteristics are clarified by comparing the geographical distributions of bridge deteriorations shown in GIS.departmental bulletin pape
Implementation of skill test using the submitted videos - Practical report for soccer juggling skills test -
In the present study, we conducted a skill test (soccer juggling skills) using the submitted videos of each student in a soccer class at a university, and the effectiveness and problems were verified. The verification suggests that it is necessary to limit the number of videos taken to create a tense atmosphere in the test and to simplify the submission method to reduce the trouble for students. It was also suggested that it is easier to evaluate a skill performed at a specific place (instep kicking, etc.) than a skill in which the subject moves around, such as juggling.departmental bulletin pape
Fundamental Study on Wastewater Treatment Technology with Resource Recovery
A fundamental study was conducted on the municipal wastewater treatment technology with resource recovery. Here, organic particles in wastewater were separated with sieves, and nitrogen and phosphorus were recovered as ammonia and orthophosphate, respectively, by adsorption. The sieving of wastewater revealed that the particle size of 22 µm or larger consists of 9236625521351f suspended solids. The maximum adsorption capacity was 17 mg-N/g-adsorbent for the ammonia-zeolite system, and 0.89 mg-P/g-adsorbent for the phosphate-water treatment sludge system. A column experiment showed that the linear velocity of 0.1 m/h or less is recommended for continuous operation. Better adsorbents and experimental conditions should be further investigated for efficient nutrient recovery.departmental bulletin pape
The effect of “Introduction to Psychology" Class for First-year's University Students: Comparison of Face to Face and Online Classes
This study examined effects of the style of “Introduction to Psychology" class for first-year's university students by comparing the 2020 survey results with the 2019 results. University students learned critical thinking and meta-cognition, stress management skills in “Introduction to Psychology" class. Study results revealed that, despite online classes due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the scores of pre- and post-test demonstrated significantly improved higher level of on critical thinking, metacognitive, and stress management skills among the 2020 students same as previous year's students. In conclusion, it suggested that it is possible that first-year's university students promoted these skills through“Introduction to Psychology" class without regard for whether face to face or online class.departmental bulletin pape
Flipped Classrooms in the Age of Remote Learning
The flipped classroom methodology is a student-centered teaching style which inverts the traditional order of instruction. Lectures or lessons which introduce new material and concepts are conducted outside of class before synchronous classroom sessions. This allows the synchronous sessions to immediately dive into the material with no preamble, often involving student-centered, active learning tasks which are thought to develop learner autonomy and agency. The current qualitative study sought to investigate 169 Japanese university students' prior levels of experience with this teaching style and discover their cognition towards it after experimenting with it for a full semester. Results found that 36.736625521351f students had some degree of prior experience in this learning style, and that 70.40f students felt that it was somewhat, or very effective as a learning style. Students' comments, both in favor of and against the methodology, are presented and discussed.departmental bulletin pape
