Tracking Students' Longitudinal Academic Motivation
Academic motivation is one of the most important factors which influences the degree of success a student will experience in achieving their academic goals. The current study represents the second phase of a longitudinal study which tracks a group of Japanese university students as they progress through their four-year college education. Following precursor research, 532 participants were given a Japanese version of the Academic Motivation Scale, which measures motivation for academic pursuits in seven scales (three types of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, plus amotivation), based on the self-determination theory of motivation. Results indicated that, in line with results from the first phase of the study, students remained largely motivated by intrinsic factors. However, one intrinsic factor was shown to slightly decrease, while one extrinsic factor slightly increased, indicating a slight trend toward extrinsic motivation. Data and motivational profiles for students who dropped out between Phases One and Two are reported, though the sample size (n = 11) was too small to produce sufficient statistical power for analysis.departmental bulletin pape
Evaluation of NDVI and LAI from satellite images
In this study, I evaluated the vegetation index NDVI and leaf area index LAI using wide-area remote sensing results using artificial satellite image data for paddy fields in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. I also investigated the relationship between these evaluation indexes and the growth status of paddy rice. For the evaluation of the vegetation index, satellite image data from the optical sensor mounted on the Sentinel-2 satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA) was used. As a result of investigating the relationship between the growth status of paddy rice and NDVI and LAI, a correlation was found between the plant height of paddy rice and their indexes. On the other hand, the correlation between the number of stems per unit area and NDVI and LAI was not clear.departmental bulletin pape
Quality of Anama Turnip Harvested in Winter
Anama turnip is one of the traditional vegetables grown in Ono city, Fukui prefecture. About 1 ton of Anama turnip stored under snow is produced per year. Anama turnip is expected as precious income and nutrition source in winter. It is generally known the vegetables stored under snow become sweeter. So we planned to study the quality of Anama turnip stored under snow.departmental bulletin pape
A Study of Damage Survey Methodology for Rainwater Harvesting Surfaces Using Drones during Disasters
Akashima Island, located in Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a small island with no running water and 16 inhabitants surviving on rainwater. This island has been the focus of our work since 2017. Notably, typhoons No. 9 and No. 10 passed consecutively near this island in early September 2020. In this study, we used aerial drone images captured before and after the typhoons passed to obtain differential information and verify whether these images could be used as part of a simple damage assessment method. Our results did not show significant differences in terms of visual damage. However, as the detection accuracy was not high, further image processing was performed to obtain results exhibiting potential for improving the accuracy.departmental bulletin pape
Record of life in the marginal settlement (Case study of Ashimi district in Fukui city)
In the master's program, the writer has been filming for two years with research theme of "recording activities aimed at revitalizing local resources". At "Ashizumigama", a charcoal kilns in Ashimi district, Fukui City, as a research theme for “recording activities aimed at revitalizing local resources". Writer surveyed the residents of the Ashimi district of Fukui City in early April 2021 to the three residents' associations of Yoshiyama-cho, Shimoyoshiyama-cho, and Kagotani-cho in the Ashimi area in order to understand the current state of changes in the actual settlement for conducted for study. From this survey, compared to the villages of Fukui Prefecture as a whole, activities in the marginal villages of the Ashimi district of Fukui City will continue, and in order to continue to be the villages live in. Explore the possibility of accepting migrants in the future by considering the current situation and activities of the marginal settlements of Fukui City in response to the growing needs for rural migration due to the corona disaster.departmental bulletin pape
Understanding the Environment for Japan's Globally Competent Human Resources
Japan has been facing numerous socioeconomic challenges – declining population through low birth rate and a rising elderly population, increased national debt, competition through globalization – that are placing great pressures on society to provide for itself. In trying to face these challenges society relies on socioeconomic institutions (government, higher education, and business) and the people that comprise them to offer solutions and guidance. However, government, higher education, and business seem to be emitting contradictory signals. The purpose of this commentary is to frame the current environment in which graduates from Japan's university system find themselves. Informed by a completed case study that investigated how one company valued study abroad from students recruited from a national university, this essay does not purport to answer questions for society as a whole, but instead, it tries to raise salient points of inquiry that can be used for further research. Researchers should take a critical eye at how Japanese society is training its global human resources so they can make certain Japan adequately competes in a hyper-connected world in this current wave of globalization.departmental bulletin pape
Development of in situ measuring device for X-ray irradiation of PVA-KI gel dosimeter
In recent years, radiation therapy, which enables local treatment without excising the affected area, has attracted attention in an aging society. In addition, high-precision radiotherapy that gives the maximum dose to the tumor and minimizes the dose to normal tissues is widespread, and it is necessary to perform dose verification in order to make a precise treatment plan. In our laboratory, using partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and potassium iodide (KI) as raw materials, it has a reactivity different from that of conventional chemical dosimeters, is highly sensitive, is safe for the human body, and is easy to manufacture. We have developed a new gel-like chemical dosimeter that is inexpensive, easy to dispose of safely, and has excellent characteristics for X-ray visualization in the range of absorbed doses of 2 Gy to 10 Gy. Currently, it is required for this gel dosimeter to clarify the detailed characteristics of the gel dosimeter in the low absorbed dose, that is, the absorbed dose region of 2 Gy or less. In this study, we constructed a system for in situ measurement (in-situ measurement) of light absorption by gel during X-ray irradiation, and attempted to clarify the characteristics in the absorbed dose range by measuring less than 2 Gy.departmental bulletin pape
Relationship between canoe sprint competition performance and muscle endurance
The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between performance and muscular endurance in canoe sprint competition. The subjects were 16 male college student kayakers (age: 19.9 ± 1.02 years old, height: 174.1 ± 6.65 cm, weight: 69.2 ± 5.91 kg, Years of experience: 5.1 ± 2.83 years). The number of Chinning and sit-ups for 30 seconds was measured for all subjects. The relationships between 200m and 1,000m best times and Chinning and sit-ups were calculated by Pearson's correlation coefficient. As a result, significant correlations were found between the 1,000m time and chinning and sit-ups. In the 1000m race, kayakers need to move the paddle with constant strength for about 3-4 minutes and continue rowing. In the kayak sprint competition, it was verified that muscle endurance is related to the 1000m competition performance.departmental bulletin pape
The Student Guidance Office 2020 Annual Report
This article reported statistics and some activities in the student guidance office as 2020 annual report, and examined the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on counseling services. The results revealed that, despite the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of counseling was the same level in 2020 compared to last few year's statistics. This resulted from the efforts that staffs selected students to be supported though some assessment tools and provided the telephone counseling service to those students at the beginning of the school year. However, it was difficult to announce an online counseling service to students, because our university fell behind in its preparations to introduce a remote communication system.departmental bulletin pape
Effects of Fuel Injection Pressure on Exhaust Gas Characteristics of Engines Using BDF
Bio diesel fuel (BDF) used in diesel engines has a higher oxygen content than gas oil. In previous studies, performance tests using BDF in small diesel engines showed that that increased PM emissions are suppressed under conditions of reduced oxygen concentration. Elsewhere, the kinematic viscosity of BDF is higher than that of gas oil, which is considered to be disadvantageous for rendering the fuel spray finer. This study compared the effects on thermal efficiency and exhaust gas of changing the fuel injection pressure, which affects finer fuel spray, in a diesel engine using gas oil and BDF. The study found that the difference in operating characteristics depending on the fuel used is reduced when the fuel injection pressure is increased to 200 MPa. However, at lower fuel injection pressures, the exhaust gas component deterioration is suppressed when using BDF.departmental bulletin pape
