The usage of a self-access learning center and improvements to enhance accessibility
The main roles of self-access in the field of independent learning are individualized learning that can account for various learner factors and developing learner autonomy (Sheerin, 1997).However, mere provision of self-access learning through setting up a self-access learning center does not guarantee that its intended roles will be realized if there are few users and/or sufficient support for providing a suitable learning environment is not present. Having examined the self-access learning center (SALC) for English studies at Hiroshima Bunkyo Women's University with a focus on the usage of the center and usage promotion, the current paper will examine the problems that the center has. Existing usage data was first examined to see which students use the center regularly and which students do not and, together with student staff, reasons for the usage patterns were discussed. A questionnaire was created based on the discussions and conducted among students at the university. The results of the questionnaire revealed that three fourths of the participants were non-regular users and that many students do not use the center because they are not confident in their English and/or they are hesitant to use the SALC alone. Students' participation in events and campaigns held in the SALC and reasons for nonparticipation were also examined. The latter part of this paper discusses ideas for promoting SALC usage and improvements as well as future actions.departmental bulletin pape
