Baltasar Gracián in Menéndez Pelayo: Stylistic Prevention and Critical Acuity
The article reviews the references that the great critic and literary historian Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo made to the literary work of Baltasar Gracián, despite the limitations and prejudices that his time —and he himself— still had about the Baroque and the figure of Baltasar Gracián. The depth and critical insight of Menéndez Pelayo allowed him to intuit and anticipate some very important aspects for the subsequent interpretation of the work of the Aragonese writer.
Baltasar Gracián and Modern Gnosticism
The modernity of the Baroque is related to the special way in which, at the beginning of the modern age, it took up the metaphysical and existential crisis of the loss of the traditional world and tried to combat it. The crisis at the beginning of modernity meant a reappearance of the Gnosticism that had not been definitively defeated at the end of antiquity. Following Hans Blumenberg’s interpretation of modernity as a second response to Gnosticism, it is proposed to consider that this response came not only from techno-scientific rationality, but also from baroque hermeneutic rationality. To this end, it is proposed to consider the baroque dispositive of refiguration of the world in terms of the way in which it participates in the process of ‘deconstruction of Christianity’ (Jean- Luc Nancy). In this specifically baroque response to Gnosticism, the thought of Baltasar Gracián is of exemplary value both for expressly offering a penetrating critical diagnosis of the unclean world, and for the original fictionalist response to the recovery of the world that he proposes.
Baltasar Gracián and Sacred Conceptism: Saint Lorenzo in Arte de Ingenio and Agudeza y Arte de Ingenio
This article examines the poems on the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence that appear in Agudeza y arte de ingenio, as well as the Jesuit’s motivation for selecting them. After an overview of the appearances of the saint in the golden lyric, we then study both internal and external aspects, to conclude with Gracián’s three possible reasons for choosing this type of sacred lyric in his treatise (knowledge of the hagiographic tradition, the fit of this sacred lyric in the author’s aesthetic proposal and his militant Aragoneseism).Este trabajo examina los poemas sobre el martirio de san Lorenzo que aparecen en Agudeza y arte de ingenio, así como la motivación del jesuita para seleccionarlos.

A chicken is good all year round. Seasonality of meat consumption in Renaissance cookbooks
Seasonality studies have a long tradition especially for the Paleolithic and Mesolithic; the aim in these periods is, among the other things, to investigate hunter-gatherer mobility within a territory. When populations started to become sedentary and to breed animals, the meat of domestic animals became, in theory, available all year round, in contrast to plants that necessarily continued to follow seasonal cycles; therefore, investigations focusing on the season of death of the animals are usually lacking in the studies on later prehistoric periods or historical contexts. However, the reading of Renaissance cookbooks evidences that the season when it was preferable to consume the meat of different domestic and wild animals was still considered as very important in that period. The selection was based not only on taxonomy, but, within the same species, the age and sex of the individuals was taken into account. The seasonal choice was related to both practical and cultural-religious reasons. From a methodological point of view these Renaissance indications suggest that it would be useful to investigate the seasonal exploitation of animal resources in more recent contexts and interpret archaeozoological data also using this additional source of information.Seasonality studies have a long tradition especially for the Paleolithic and Mesolithic; the aim in these periods is, among the other things, to investigate hunter-gatherer mobility within a territory.
This paper proposes a study framed in Social History from the point of view of social relationships and the integration in the community of a guild from Madrid in the 18th century: the “prenderos”, secondhand dealers. This investigation highlights a neighborhood community -the one established in the Rastro of Madrid in this period- just like the neighborhood and the solidarity, understood as the main mechanisms that the most disadvantaged groups develop to survive. The main objective is to study the effects of the introduction and integration in the community of this guild, characterized by some social and economic dynamics that differed from the ones that prevailed in this area of the city. This paper is understood as a case study of the social situation in Madrid in the 18th century.
