    No full text
In the 20th century, philosophies of the subject or person are divided between essentialist and existentialist schools of thought. The article discusses, based on the philosophies of that century, the ideas of essence and existence in Gracián, especially in relation to his concept of person, expressed in Oráculo Manual, with the aim of demonstrating that his concept of person harbors an idea of essence as potential and existence as action. The objetive is to create a dialogue between radically different schools to highlight differences and similarities in their approach and definition of a fundamental aspect in philosophy: the human being.

Pleasure and suffering: beauty and ugliness in the feminine allegories of the Criticón, by Baltasar Gracián

    No full text
At least in part, the visual dimension of the Criticón is explained by the function of the theatra that the pilgrims travel through and the allegories that preside over them, in accordance with the tradition of the theatrum mundi of theological origin. To this structure, which would have another of its components in the theaters of memory, plastic species such as emblems, hieroglyphs and inscriptions traditionally associated with such spaces are added. Among these materials, the images of beauty and deformity are brought to their maximum expressive capacity as external symbols of virtue and vice that both the protagonists and the reader must decode according to an advanced allegorical key since the meanings are changing, intertwined in the complex writing of the world. Thus, this article aims to observe the main feminine allegories that appear in El Criticón, in their relationship with beauty and deformity, and their complementary meanings of suffering and pleasure.

The dog of Tassignano (Capannori, Lucca): a possible Roman Age foundation ritual

    No full text
In 2018, in the locality of Tassignano (Capannori, LU) the skeleton in anatomical connection of a dog was discovered during the excavation of a rural building, whose frequentation lasted from the 2nd/1st century BC to the 6th/7th century AD. A structure interpreted as a balneum was brought to light, equipped with a brick floor (opus figlinum) and a small basin. A perimeter wall of this room, dismantled by a late antique spoliation, originally covered the remains of the animal: these, intercepted following the emptying of the spoliation pit, lay partially below the brick floor. The dog is an adult male and its skeleton is complete, except for part of the neurocranium and some cervical vertebrae, probably destroyed by the spoliation trench. The fragmented skull did not allow in-depth morphological analysis, while it was possible to make some comparisons based on the mandible. The taphonomic study revealed the presence of butchering marks, linked to skinning, on the dorsal surface of a metatarsus, indicating that the carcass had been treated before deposition. This evidence, together with the context of its deposition, would lead to the hypothesis that the carcass was used as part of a foundation ritual of the building. In 2018, in the locality of Tassignano (Capannori, LU) the skeleton in anatomical connection of a dog was discovered during the excavation of a rural building, whose frequentation lasted from the 2nd/1st century BC to the 6th/7th century AD.

    No full text
We conducted an analysis in April 2000 on a sample of osteological remains (258 cranial bones and teeth and 15 fragments of plastrons) of non-volant vertebrates recovered from the Roman site of Vicus Augustanus (1st century A.D. - 4th century A.D.) within the area of the extant presidential preserve of Castelporziano (Rome). Domestic mammals (96%) represent most of the identified remains (n=242). Among wild vertebrates we determined the presence of tortoises, hares, and red deer. Some of these species were also confirmed by MacKinnon in two unpublished reports of 2004 and 2010. We have compared the data obtained with those relating to the wild vertebrates currently present in the preserve. Sacred (Con)Texts: Biblical Philosophy and Postmodern Ethics

    No full text
Faced with the relativist or neoconservative stereotypes, solvent authors such as Vattimo or Derrida have defended a binding postmetaphysical ethics. The Bible has played a fundamental role in their proposals: on the one hand, they have reminded that the biblical imaginary has been the fundamental cultural substrate of moral philosophy until modernity; on the other hand, far from proposing an abandonment of those roots, they have articulated specifically postmodern interpretations of them. This article tries to contribute to this line of work from another powerful biblical figure: Job. For that, we will look at three interpretations of the wisdom literature that cover sufficiently the spectrum of modern derivations: the rationalist, the existentialist and the nihilist. The reappropriation of these interpretations, in a way consistent with current historical-critical studies, deepens and enhances the value of the book of Job for dialogue with postmodern ethics

The Toxins of Ilusión: Opposites of “Ilusión” in the Work of Julián Marías

    No full text
This article explores the concept of ilusión in the philosophy of Julián Marías, who defines it as “desire with an argument.” Unlike the English term “illusion,” which often implies deception, ilusión refers to a forward-looking existential attitude that both shapes personal identity and brings meaning to human projects. The study examines the “toxins of ilusión”-factors that hinder or destroy it-such as the denial of temporality, the fear of desire, objectification, and boredom. By analyzing these obstacles, the article highlights the crucial role of ilusión in preserving personal authenticity and preventing life impoverishment
