It appears to be an illustration showing a moment in time when the storage area (likely in a Minoan palace) would have been fully in use. The image shows 8 young men lifting burlap/cloth sacks. The sacks are strangely tied in multiple areas so that they appear to bulge, and they are bringing the sacks from a hallway into rooms behind doors off the main area. The men wear only loin cloths, and a few wear headbands or armbands. They all have long hair. The floor and walls of the storage magazine appear to be made of stone, while there are wooden beams on the ceiling and wooden doors. A few men are also reaching into recesses in the floor to extract more sacks, and it looks like these recesses can be covered with slabs. There is one storage barrel standing upright, and one labrys hanging on the wall

The vessel is dark and filled with soil being excavated. The plaster that was used to stabilize the amphora for removal from site is still visible, as is the rope and soil around the amphora. This excavation seems to be taking place indoors, likely in a conservation lab, which is typical practice for excavating delicate vessels that may contain valuable objects
Poto-Poto School Painting
No full textReverend William Pruitt (1911-1999), who served as a Presbyterian missionary in the Belgian Congo from the 1930s to 1978, collected a group of 37 paintings from artists at the Poto-Poto School, a small art school in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo that is still in operation today. In 1998, the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. began an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse made by several children of missionaries from the time Pruitt was a missionary in the Congo. This collection of paintings was found in the Rhodes College collection in the summer of 2023. The paintings were digitized and cataloged in the Visual Resources Center during fall 2023.

This is an excerpt from the exhibition brochure: "In 1970, the celebrated singer and activist Nina Simone and the poet Weldon Irvine released the song, ?To Be Young, Gifted, and Black,? which became an anthem commemorating the achievements of the African American community during the Black Power movement. Nearly fifty years later, this exhibition, drawn from the Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art, celebrates Simone?s prideful call to action. Young, Gifted, and Black?with over forty contemporary artworks made in the last thirty-five years?arrives at a moment of unprecedented visibility for black artists who have historically been underrepresented in museums and major collections. Younger-generation voices, in dialogue with established predecessors, explore questions of race, sexuality, power, and history, while also pushing the boundaries of artistic practice. Some of the works on view address the daily, real-world struggles of African Americans, while others focus on more personal?and more universal?questions of identity.We hope that this exhibition will inspire your own investigation into the same questions these young and gifted artists are asking."
