This is an excerpt from the exhibition brochure: "In 1970, the celebrated singer and activist Nina Simone and the poet Weldon Irvine released the song, ?To Be Young, Gifted, and Black,? which became an anthem commemorating the achievements of the African American community during the Black Power movement. Nearly fifty years later, this exhibition, drawn from the Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art, celebrates Simone?s prideful call to action. Young, Gifted, and Black?with over forty contemporary artworks made in the last thirty-five years?arrives at a moment of unprecedented visibility for black artists who have historically been underrepresented in museums and major collections. Younger-generation voices, in dialogue with established predecessors, explore questions of race, sexuality, power, and history, while also pushing the boundaries of artistic practice. Some of the works on view address the daily, real-world struggles of African Americans, while others focus on more personal?and more universal?questions of identity.We hope that this exhibition will inspire your own investigation into the same questions these young and gifted artists are asking." No full textThis digital image was taken by Chip Pankey and uploaded to DLynx by the Visual Resources Center in July 2022.This is an image documenting the "Learn Sing Plants Counting Monsters Colors Alphabets" exhibition, which was held in the Clough-Hanson Gallery from February 11 through March 11. This exhibition was created by the Art Department Professor Karl Erickson. In this exhibition Erickson creates a space filled with large scale letters and televisons scattered throughout; viewers engaged with various educational programming through the televisions. The whimsy of this work was achieved through the experimental video and audio, combined with human scaled letters and numbers as well a dynamic arrangement of techincal aspects

The exhibition, "POCKETS REX," is a collection of new works by Clare Torina presented in the gallery's windows and gaps. Each painting, object, and curtain was made and/or placed by the artist to relinquish wall space so that the challenging design of the gallery may be embraced and attended to. Over the windows, arrangements with raw canvas. At floor level, miniature paintings. A monumental structure ' an arch in repose ' rests in the center. Taking varied approaches to painting and sculpture, imagery is drawn from Torina's personal set of fascinations ' objects of worship, animal behavior, superstition, physical comedy and exhibition history. The pictorial and performative meeting of these interests is at the core of POCKETS REX.
Clare Torina is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in New York. She received her BFA from the University of Memphis in 2009 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012. She has been a resident at the Skowhegan School School of Painting and Sculpture and an education fellow at the Wassaic Project. In addition to her own practice, Clare is the co-runner of Flyweight, a 1:12 scale mobile exhibition space for solo projects

Master's Thesis: Amplifying the ESL Curriculum Culturally Responsive Lesson Planning for Recent Arrivals
No full textThe basis of this integrated curriculum incorporates the language needs of recent immigrants to succeed in their mainstream classrooms. The framework of this design is not an independent construction of ESL principles and procedures common to most ESL classroom initiatives where basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening are the intention. The construction of this curriculum is centered on a more practical needs analysis of the language expectations during lectures, in-class assignments, and verbal interactions taking place throughout the day. Working in tandem with core classroom instructors and bilingual paraprofessionals, a clear action plan, stressing authentic communication in these classes to assist learners in participation and the retaining of relevant information to meet their academic needs is the objective. School administrators and staff are often in need of a better formula to teach learners who are new to English. A focus on anticipated key vocabulary and critical language structures would be an effective measure to build confidence and encourage a variety of class interactions. These language points would be rehearsed in small group work discussions, role-plays, memory games, bi-lingual Bingo activities, and other assignments involving task-based information, reasoning, and opinion-gap opportunities through culturally responsive teaching strategies
