The Central Court is an essential part of the operations of a Minoan-style palace, because it is open to the air and a central meeting space. The palace appears to be in a natural basin, with mountains rising up in the background. The ruins of the Court itself show square cuttings in the floor with stone protruding, showing where columns lined the perimeter in the Protopalatial Period but were covered over in the Neopalatial Period
