Liminality and Transition in Turkey: Coded Methods of Subversion through Music Videos
No full textThis article provides insight into crowd manipulation methods used in modern Turkish society under an increasingly authoritarian regime while also exploring various cryptic methods of subversion used by people under free speech limitations.
Turkey is a nation divided politically, geographically and ideologically. Throughout the years, Turkey has seen increasingly limiting censorship and intimidation at the hand of the current government. Due to limitations on free speech, people have had to rely on cryptic messages encoded through symbolism in their works or online forums under the guise of being something else to convey their feelings towards Turkey’s leadership and towards Turkey’s unique situation.
Aleyna Tilki is a famous young singer who has faced intense public scrutiny and negative media coverage. Tilki’s dress sense does not conform to Islamic standards in the context of a nation undergoing increasing Islamisation and she incorporates a range of international stylistic elements into her image and music videos in the context of a nation becoming increasingly isolationist and inward looking. No full textThis article invites readers to reflect on the unmarked Famine Graveyard on Carr’s Hill, County Cork, where around 30,000 famine victims are buried, along – it is likely – with the remains of many children whose mothers were in the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home in Cork. Deep mapping provides the methodological blueprint for the exploration of this site, and the article will draw on the work of Gordon, Till and others, in its consideration of the process of deep mapping as a means of creating “the spaces and times for ghosts” (Till, 2010 p.7). The article contextualizes the project with reference to key works in culture (visual arts, literature) and it documents the author\u27s own mixed ethnographic and artistic research methods, which include the process of writing live on site. It argues that the inclusion of a creative non-fiction response to the site is a crucial factor in exploring its meaning, and suggests that it is this creative work, underpinned by academic scholarship, which is best-placed to offer examples of the way a present and future society can begin to engage with this liminal and still traumatic territory

Get PDFThis report describes a semester-long project in which two university language instructors applied a variety of improvisation activities in their online classes in the spring of 2021 to facilitate active engagement, foster social community, and heighten oral fluency in the synchronous online learning environment. The authors describe the exercises, as well as their approaches, observations, and recommendations, and reflect on their possible impact on the aforementioned aspects. They show that engagement and community can be promoted through improvisation activities, despite the two-dimensional online experience
Film scenes and role-playing: Potentials and empirical findings on the use of audio-visual texts in foreign language teaching
Get PDFRole-plays are a popular task format in foreign language teaching, among other things to promote speaking. Teachers often assume that their learners have already acquired ideas about the scene to be portrayed or that they can draw on knowledge from their first language. However, this is not always the case. To successfully perform a role-play and thus an interaction, learners need knowledge about the underlying generic characteristics, such as the structure or the verbal, but also non-verbal design of the scene. Referring to a process model for learning social interaction situations (Hallet, 2015), this paper argues for the use of film scenes to model different kinds of interactions and prepare learners for role-playing activities. After a presentation of the theoretical framework, selected results from a design-based research study, which focussed on promoting speaking in two Year 6 English classes (a total of 52 learners aged 11-12 on a pre-mediate level) via a synthesis of genre- and drama-based approach, are presented
Language-aware performative teaching in multilingual primary school classes: "Spielend beschreiben" - an empirical study on the promotion of descriptive writing skills
No full textDer vorliegende Beitrag stellt die Dissertationsstudie „Spielend (be)schreiben“ vor, bei der performative Verfahren zur Förderung deskriptiver Fähigkeiten in medialer Schriftlichkeit anhand von Bildbeschreibungen auf ihre mögliche Wirksamkeit hin untersucht wurden; die erwähnte schreibbezogene Förderung erfolgte dabei im Rahmen eines sprachbewussten Sachunterrichts in sprachlich hetereogenen Grundschulklassen. Nach einem Blick auf die Ausgangslage wird deskriptives Sprachhandeln aus theoretischer Perspektive betrachtet und im Anschluss daran die methodische Vorgehensweise im Rahmen der Studie skizziert. Der Beitrag fokussiert die Darstellung des konkret untersuchten performativen Settings und der darin verwendeten performativen Arbeitstechniken, um einen Einblick in das sprachdidaktische Vorgehen der Studie zu ermöglichen. Nach der Präsentation und Diskussion der Ergebnisse schließt der Beitrag mit einem Ausblick auf sprachdidaktische Möglichkeiten.This article presents parts of the doctoral study "Spielend (be)schreiben", in which performative methods for promoting descriptive writing skills were examined for their possible effectiveness using picture descriptions. The writing-related promotion took place in the context of language-aware subject teaching in linguistically heterogeneous primary school classes. After a look at the initial situation, descriptive language action is considered from a theoretical perspective and the methodological approach used in the study is then outlined. The article focuses on the presentation of the specific performative setting investigated and the performative working techniques used in it in order to provide an insight into the language didactic approach of the study. After presenting and discussing the results, the article concludes with an outlook on language didactic possibilities
"Minidrama": aesthetic-performative (literature) teaching
No full textMinidramen können sowohl im Fremdsprachenunterricht wie auch im Literaturunterricht in der Fremdsprache zur Festigung der Sprachkenntnisse sowie der ästhetischen Vermittlung und Reflexion von Literatur und Kultur produktiv eingesetzt werden. Die Vorstellung einer dramapädagogischen Unterrichtseinheit anhand des Minidramas „Mutter lernt Englisch“ von Elke Heidenreich wird ergänzt von theoretischen Überlegungen über Literarizität und Performativität. Eine Auswahlbibliografie über Minidrama und Quellen zu Minidramen ergänzen die Erörterungen.Minidramas can be used productively in foreign language as well as in literature classes in the foreign language to consolidate language skills and to convey and reflect on literature and culture in an aesthetic way. The presentation of a performative teaching unit based on the minidrama "Mutter lernt Englisch" by Elke Heidenreich is supplemented by theoretical reflections on literariness and performativity. A selected bibliography on minidrama and sources on minidrama complete the discussion
Buckling of thin-walled cylinders: experimental and numerical investigation
Get PDFThin-walled structures, also known as shells, combine light weight with high strength and are used in a diverse range of fields including aerospace engineering, civil engineering and chemical engineering. Common applications of these shells include oil and gas storage tanks, powder or liquid storage tanks in pharmaceutical plants as well as airplane frames and ship bodies. Although these thin-walled shells have a wide variety of uses, this research is motivated by storage tank collapse in the process industry. Thin-walled cylindrical tanks common in the food and biotechnology sectors are prone to buckling (or inward collapse) due to accidentally induced internal vacuum. During the sterilisation process, steam can condense, causing a reduction in volume. This results in an equivalent increase in external pressure, triggering collapse, or buckling of the tank. Such a collapse, if it occurs, tends to be catastrophic resulting in the complete destruction of the vessel (see Fig.1). Notwithstanding ..
