Queer auf Deutsch: Positive classroom environment and LGBTQ+ inclusion through drama-based pedagogy in a collegiate beginner German course
In this report, we retrospectively explore the effects of drama-based pedagogy on classroom environment and LGBTQ+ inclusion in a first-semester collegiate German course. We examined students’ self-reported perceptions of their learning experience in English, as well as gendered language production in German. Our retroactive analysis suggests that pedagogical decisions and activities rooted in drama-based pedagogy contributed to creating a safe and inclusive classroom that encouraged LGBTQ+ students to express parts of their queer identities in the target language
Processing the Covid-19 pandemic in German as a foreign language
The isolation caused by the pandemic has affected students all over the world. It is not only teaching and interaction between students that has suffered, but also the mental health. Movement-oriented teaching is a good way to alleviate mental stress. And movement-oriented teaching also has a beneficial effect on learning. Under the conditions of online teaching, this was a difficult task to achieve. As part of the project "Ich fühle - du fühlst - wir fühlen", which was carried out at the University of Porto in the winter semester of 2021, the aim was to come to terms with this intense time using the tools of drama pedagogy and aspects of psychodrama. As it turns out, even with relatively little knowledge of the foreign language German at A2 level, it is possible to talk about difficult, sometimes very personal topics
Performative approaches to teaching German. Introduction to the special issue
This introduction to the special edition of Scenario offers an insight into the work of Section D.5 Theatrical and Performative Forms of Aesthetic Learning as part of the International Conference of German Teachers (IDT) at the University of Vienna in August 2022. The article first summarizes the section\u27s work. Following on from this, the current specialist discussion is discussed with regard to the terminological trend of using performative as an umbrella term for theater and drama pedagogical work. The article concludes with a brief description of the contributions to the special issue
Book Review – Flann O’Brien: Gallows Humour, edited by Ruben Borg and Paul Fagan
Brian O’Nolan aka Flann O’Brien, one of the most prominent Irish literary figures of twentieth century liteture, is not an easy read for one not clued into modern Irish history. Analysing O’Brien’s work, from the complex lens of gallows humour, is thus an extremely challenging task. The task taken up by Borg and Fagan is to map O’Brien’s acutely perplexing sense of humour and make it more accessible to a wider audience
Auschwitz Days
Auschwitz Days is a short story that depicts the transitional period of the Jews who were transported to the holocaust gas chambers. The protagonist Goldberg\u27s liminal existence in the concentration camp represents the uncertainty, anxiety, ambiguity, and fear experienced by the innocent people. In the story, the setting of the concentration camp is equated with a purgatory liminal space where the protagonist is guided by Joseph (who resembles the character of Virgil in Dante\u27s The Divine Comedy) to his freedom from the camp. Unfortunately, he could not escape as he saw his wife and child being taken to the concentration camp at that time.
"Facettenreich" – A theatre course at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen
Der Fokus lag darin, den Studierenden Platz für Kreativität zu geben, einen sicheren Raum für Emotionen zu bieten und ihr Empathievermögen zu fördern."Facettenreich" is the name of the theater course at the Department of German Language at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, which took place for the first time in 2020/2021. Due to the corona regulations in force until then, the course was held online. At the beginning of the winter semester 2021/2022, the course took place in person, then, due to the renewed switch to online teaching, it was initially continued online via Zoom and in spring 2022 it was held in person again. In the third year, the theater course was only held in person. The aims of the course were to give students the opportunity to speak freely in an informal setting, to engage imaginatively with language and to take away their shyness about expressing themselves spontaneously in German. The focus was on giving the students space for creativity, providing a safe space for emotions and encouraging their empathy
Theatre techniques as a medium for focusing on form in language didactics in the context of German as a second language and teaching of language in different subjects
Drama-based pedagogy uses techniques of theatre to bring about holistic learning through action in different subjects (e.g. Tselikas, 1999). It includes specific techniques (e.g. hot seat, freeze frame, statue, doubling etc.) that are used in the process of developing theatre plays and can sometimes also be experienced in final theatre productions. However, they can also be used in content-oriented lessons to support learning processes. In subject lessons, the focus is usually on exploring the content of the subject through drama, whereas in foreign language lessons the techniques are deployed to promote oral interaction and linguistic improvisation. In this article, a form-focused use of staging techniques will be presented. In order to foster student internalisation of grammatical structures, vocabulary and educational language constructions, these techniques are embedded in meaningful, communicative contexts which enable students to experience the relationships between linguistic forms and functions. Their use as a creative form of expression, which students develop, practise and perform in the safe setting of the seminar, provides an authentic context for the target structures to be repeated multiple times. At the same time, the structures are linked to physical and aesthetic experiences, leading to deeper internalisation and promoting lasting memorisation. From the perspective of language didactics, as shown in this article, the individual staging techniques can develop very different potentials depending on how they are implemented and can be used for different language proficiencies and learning contexts
