Strengthening presence and performativity systematically: A prototypical concept for language teacher training

    No full text
This article sheds light on the relevance of performativity for teaching languages in the digital age. First, arguments in favour of theatrical approaches in language teacher education are discussed. Based on this discussion, performative teaching skills are then defined as a target dimension of language teacher training. In order to achieve these skills, a system-compatible teaching concept was designed as a prototype for the university training phase. In this article, the subject-specific didactic development research as well as the testing and evaluation of the teaching concept are discussed. The preliminary results suggest to systematically implement theatre pedagogical practice in university language teacher training

The Radical Ghost and Narrative Time

    No full text
This paper explores ghostly encounters and their relationship to narrative and time in fiction. This paper argues that the presence of the ghost within a narrative signals the potential for social and ideological change within the diegesis by problematising socio-cultural expectations of the ubiquity of linear time as they pertain to institutions of power.  This paper considers three texts Charles Dickens’s novella A Christmas Carol, the second Pablo Larraín’s film Spencer and finally the BBC’s 1992 mockumentary Ghostwatch. &nbsp

WindValue, End-of-Life Decisions for Wind Farms

    Get PDF
Wind farms have an estimated lifespan of twenty to twenty five years, and as they age, their value decreases, potentially becoming a liability. This article discusses a research project that aims to develop a decision support tool for wind farm owners. The tool will help estimate financial outcomes and assess risk profiles for different options such as repowering, life extension, or decommissioning. Additionally, the project will explore challenges and opportunities related to co-investment between local communities and wind farm owners

Can Rights of Nature Contribute to Enhanced Environmental Protection in Ireland?

    Get PDF
Several sectors of Irish society have put forward rights of nature as a way to further enhance environmental protection in the country and help curb environmental degradation. In light of rights of nature developments in other jurisdictions, this piece presents rights of nature in their social, economic, and legal context, and summarises their reception by legal scholars. This portrayal will provide a basis for analysing the two main Irish rights of nature legal propositions and assess, albeit in preliminary fashion, whether these initiatives – if enacted – would further enhance environmental protection in Ireland

The Irish have a long tradition of emigration. The United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Canada all have sizeable Irish populations. The Irish abroad have celebrated in song and story their yearning to return "to the ould sod", yet how many of them do return to their native shore? According to Jackson (1967), in a study of the Skibbereen area of Cork County, one person in four had lived or worked abroad at some stage in their lives.&nbsp

A Chronogoly of the Curious in the County and City of Cork and Elsewhere Being an Account of Remarkable Meteorological Events and Other Occurrences of Note

    Get PDF
There is a vast range of historic documents relating to the history of the county and city of Cork. One of the more interesting aspects of these sources of information for the meteorologist or climatologist is that they often include references to unusual or extreme weather events. These references may occur in a haphazard manner or on a more organised basis; they include consideration of extreme examples of common weather e.g. frosts and gales; unusual natural events such as floods and earthquakes; and rarely seen phenomena like Aurora Borealis. &nbsp
