Development and Underdevelopment : States or Processes?

    Get PDF
One of the most striking features of today\u27s world is the disparity between poverty and wealth; between starvation and abundance; between want and luxury. In this paper a global perspective is taken, in an attempt to explain how this inequality originated, and from this attempt at explanation the central argument unfolds; it being that the analysis of underdevelopment is inseparable from that of development; that they are in fact parts of the same process; parts of a continuing action.&nbsp

Inside the Branch Plant Economy: A Quest for Truth and Justice

There is a dichotomy in our discipline regarding the merits of the quantitative approach as opposed to the more literary and descriptive traditions. Many of the proponents of the latter approach fail to recognise the advantages of quantitative analysis. To illustrate the folly of this attitude let us take a particular case study.&nbsp

A Consideration of the Social Classification of Occupations for Historical Data Sources

    Get PDF
The use of occupation as a key to revealing as near to reality as possible the circumstances of peoples\u27 lives in the past is very well established. This source has depended upon a common methodology, at undergraduate (O’Connell, 1988) and academic levels, to utilise the occupational data contained in the manuscript census enumerators’ books. This methodology is commonly referred to as Armstrong\u27s scheme of social classification of occupations

    Where are the Women?

    Get PDF
In more recent times Roder (1977) quotes an anonymous Professor of Geography as stating that he would never employ a female in his department. While academics holding such a view may now be few, so too are females employed as geographers. The purpose of this paper is to assess the status of women in Geography in Ireland as an example of a discipline where women \u27go so far\u27 and no further. Some suggestions are advanced as to the reasons why women are so grossly under-represented within this profession. The paper aims essentially to raise questions and provoke discussion and is not intended as a definitive study

Land Drainage and Reclamation: A Local Study

There are few ecosystems in which humans do not have either a direct or indirect effect. Man\u27s impact on ecosystem components is greatest on those which are deliberately managed in order to-maximise the output of a particular product (Tivy et al, 1981). This paper outlines the findings of a research project, conducted during the winter period of 1987-\u2788. In this study one particular ecosystem under management in Ireland, that of wet mineral lowland for the production of grass, was assessed.&nbsp

The Personality of West Cork: (Part 1)

    Get PDF
What do we mean by West Cork and where is it in the first place? I suppose we could all agree that West Cork should be west of Cork city - that island city which takes its name from the boggy marsh which its people eventually reclaimed and conquered. But \u27Cork\u27 means other things as well. James Joyce had a painting of the\u27. city by the Lee placed in a cork frame on one of his walls - so a cork can float, and duck and weave. So already before we head westwards from Cork, two images - that of a soft treacherous bog - difficult terrain to conquer, even more difficult to hold - and that of a floating cork - shall we say a currach - swim into view. We can tack off for West Cork from many directions - for West Cork is a land of mobile boundaries, a place - whose location and character curves and shifts, depending not only on the weather, but on the different lenses and assumptions that we bring to bear on it

Be a geographer and see the world! The purpose of this article is to help, present undergraduates explore the option of a higher degree in North America, through giving my own knowledge of a system which can appear disconcertingly alien and to which there are no comprehensive guides. If you are considering a North American University, you should write to the Departments of Geography for details rather than the graduate admissions offices

The End of History or the Beginning of a New Era: Recent Geopolitical Events in Perspective

    Get PDF
A senior figure in the American State Department wrote in an article in Foreign Affairs in September 1989, that we were witnessing the end of history. Such a view was being put forward as the governments of the various communist countries were being challenged not only in Eastern Europe but also in East Asia. His belief was that the view of the individual as enshrined within the ideal of the liberal democratic capitalist system had been victorious over the communal beliefs which were thought to inspire the communist system. The article argued for the end of history on the basis that after some centuries of dispute both armed and intellectual, that the world is uniformly evolving towards a system of liberal capitalist democracy. That such a belief may exist within some of the ruling circles of the United States is clear evidence that the actions of 1989 in Eastern Europe and East Asia have forced a reformulation of the beliefs which have sustained some generations of Eastern and Western policy makers and strategists. This article aims to examine changes that have occurred throughout Eastern Europe up to 1989

    The Purpose of a University

Universities have developed as places of higher of third level education. They figure Widely in modern society by offering a large intellectual input and stimulus to that society. Most societies, today select persons for employment on the basis of academic achievement and on the basis of a package of educational qualifications. University sometimes seem as the best way to enhancing qualifications. This view conflicts with the original concept of a University and gives rise to the current debate of \u27education versus qualification\u27. What is the purpose of university? In order to answer this question it is necessary to examine the original reasons for the establishment of universities and how they have changed
