In the evolving landscape of Irish health science libraries, librarians increasingly expand their roles beyond traditional resource management. Coaching and mentoring, distinct but complementary disciplines, offer invaluable support for professional development, leadership growth, and for navigating the growing complexities of library services. Through structured guidance, experience-sharing, and role-modelling, they foster continuous learning, career advancement, and a strong professional network, ensuring librarians remain adaptable, resourceful, and effective

Cultivating the Power of Curiosity in Professional Practice

Curiosity is the drive to seek information and explore ideas and perspectives in order to learn something new. It is fundamentally tied to how people make sense and draw meaning from the world and may be viewed as a knowledge network-building process. There is increasing acknowledgement that being curious can bring significant advantages, particularly in jobs characterised by high demands for learning. Cultivating curiosity helps foster open environments that inspire new ideas, innovations, efficiencies and adaptive behaviours. We can enable this by providing sufficient novelty and complexity in our systems and teaching, and by building deeper connections with stakeholders. This article briefly examines how and why we should cultivate this trait in our work and workplaces

‘It is forbidden to speak Breton and to spit on the ground’: Internal Racism, Diasporas and Regionalisms in Modern France

    No full text
A wide range of specialists often declare the 19th century to be the century of identities, following the emergence of nation-states and the consolidation of a seemingly stronger, stablervariety of countries to be in competition with each other. France, during the whole of the Modernperiod, did not fail this general rule and sought to the making of a roman national from theFrench Revolution to the 20th century, that is to say serving the ultimate goal that was thecrystalisation of the French language as a means of legitimacy for the elites of the country. Itbegan with the language, naturally, and inevitably the question of race came along, as languagesare such that once accepted, no other can be amalgamated or introduced. Speakers of those otherregional languages did reside in the countryside, which added a gap, that is, an opportunity todiscriminate. In essence, this article deals with three main aspects of this “internal racism” livedand experienced by France’s regional minorities. First is the legal aspect, which enabled the stateto operate through penal authorities. Second is the cultural aspect, which is divided intoacademic and linguistic repressions notably. Finally, the article enhances, somewhathistoriographically, as it depicts as well a history of French elites during this Modern era, thescientific attempt of this racism to justify itself through the implementation of an undesirablegeography of individuals, from acceptable to unacceptable, from rural agricultural workers torich urban owners, from well-born to not.
