SOCIAL MEDIA AND E-COMMERCE IN POST-COVID ERA: EXPLORING A NEW PARADIGM FOR BUSINESS SURVIVAL IN AFRICA

    No full text
It is a truism that humanity is steeped into the new normal; no thanks to the COVID-19 Pandemic, which was not only a global phenomenon but a devastating one as that, with humongous implications across every field of human endeavour. As nations and nationalities grapple with the effects of the Pandemic, new economic and business models have evolved; one such is the interface of e-commerce with social media. Anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989), the study design is conceptual with the aims of exploring social media in the light of e-commerce for a developing economy and proposing a new business model as a means of survival in an unpredictable environment. The study therefore recommends constant and real-time engagement of customers and potential customers through social media as many online buyers more often than not, reach purchase decisions after consulting friends online and reading recommendations, reviews and comments of others on a particular product or service. Furthermore, due to the unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic and its concomitant resurgent waves, e-commerce should be the model of choice for business survival in Nigeria, the African continent and the world at large.&nbsp

This study investigates the challenges affecting the development and implementation of research compendiums for enhancing project writing among Accounting and Business Education (A&BE) students in Nigerian tertiary institutions. Research compendiums serve as vital academic resources that provide organized research materials and methodological guidance essential for quality project work. Despite their importance, various challenges hinder their effective development and use across Nigerian colleges and universities. Employing a descriptive and exploratory research design, the study population comprised 1,800 respondents, comprising of 1,600 final-year Accounting A&BE students and 200 lecturers from selected Nigerian tertiary institutions. A purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample of 300 respondents (220 students and 80 lecturers). Data were collected using structured questionnaires and interviews, with the instrument’s validity confirmed through a Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.82. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, and means. Qualitative data from interviews were analyzed thematically to complement and deepen understanding of the quantitative findings. The study identified major challenges such as inadequate funding, limited access to digital and library resources, insufficient training and motivation among academic staff, and lack of institutional support. Additionally, limited research skills and poor utilization of compendiums by students were noted. These challenges collectively impede the quality of project writing and negatively impact academic outcomes. The study recommends among others that increased investment in research infrastructure, comprehensive training for lecturers, enhanced ICT facilities, and integration of research methodology into the curriculum. Addressing these challenges will enable Nigerian tertiary institutions to better utilize research compendiums, thereby improving project writing standards among A&BE students

This study is an assessment of the extent of service delivery benefits obtainable from digital technology application to land administration and the impediments in South East Nigeria. The study is anchored on the critical relevance of land administration to sustainable development, the place of digital technology application in defining the current global standard in land administration and the reality that local and national practices that significantly fall short of global standards are no longer acceptable in today’s world that has turned into a global village. Key service delivery benefits obtainable from digital technology application to land administration were identified and the extent of factors militating against their realization in the five states of south east Nigeria were assessed. Survey method was adopted in the study, using instrument of questionnaire. Purposive sampling technique was used, with sample size of 150 respondents involved, composed of land administration service providers comprising land officers, land surveyors, town planners and other support staff of the government ministries in charge of land administration in the states. Results revealed that the level of service delivery benefits obtainable from digital technology application to land administration is significant but the extent of factors militating against the application in the states is generally significant. The study concludes and recommends that in view of the significant benefits obtainable from digital technology application to land administration and the significant impediments to the application, therefore is urgent need for the states to remove all the existing impediments in order to migrate swiftly to a holistic Digital Land Administration System (DLAS) and be on current global best practices.&nbsp

INSECURITY AND POVERTY: TWO SIDES OF THE FOOD SECURITY COIN IN NIGERIA

    No full text
The relationship between insecurity, poverty and food security is a bidirectional, dynamic yet complicated one. This is because one can become both a cause and a consequence of the other. Contemporary studies have shown that insecurity (disruption of economic activities) could lead to loss of asset and source of livelihood (poverty) and in extension food insecurity. On the other hand, poverty can be a major cause of insecurity and food security. This study examined the relationship between insecurity, poverty and food security in Nigeria. The study employed time series data on internally displaced person by violent conflicts (IDPVC) as proxy for insecurity, household consumption expenditure (HCEXP) as proxy to capture level of poverty and prevalence of undernourishment (POUN) as proxy for food insecurity all covering a period of 19 years (2001-2020). The data were sourced from the World Development Indicator. The study used STATA software (version 13) to analyze the collected data. The study adopted the Error Correction Model (ECM) to investigate the relationship between poverty, insecurity and food security in Nigeria. The study found a strong positive relationship between insecurity, and food security status of Nigerians. The study further found that an increase in the household consumption expenditure will reduce food insecurity. As a result of these findings, the study recommended among others that Government and private sectors should make concerted efforts to improve agricultural productivity, This could be achieved through unfettered access to agricultural inputs (high yielding varieties seeds, fertilizers, irrigations facilities, farm machines, storage facilities) for farmers especially smallholder subsistent farmers, revision of the current land tenure system in Nigeria, encouraging cutting-edge agricultural research and development

    No full text
Z39.50 protocol plays a crucial role in enhancing library operations, particularly in cataloguing and resource sharing among libraries. Despite its significance, the level of awareness and utilization among academic librarians remain a subject of inquiry, especially in South-South, Nigeria. This study therefore, examined the awareness and extent of utilization of the Z39.50 protocol among academic librarians in federal and state universities in South-South, Nigeria. This study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of this study was 262 academic librarians, made up of 97 academic librarians from Federal universities and 159 academic librarians from the State university libraries in South-South Nigeria. The study used census sampling technique and therefore used all the 262 academic librarians that constituted the population of the study because the number was manageable. A self-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data obtained from the study was analysed using descriptive statistics of mean scores and standard deviation, while the corresponding null hypotheses were tested using independent sample t-test.  The study revealed that while academic librarians in federal and state universities in South-South, Nigeria have a moderate awareness of the Z39.50 protocol and utilized it for cataloguing and resource-sharing, there is no significant difference in their level of awareness and utilization across the two categories of institutions. The study therefore, recommended that academic librarians should be exposed to trainings in this respect, in order to enable them grasp the knowledge of the application and use of Z39.50 protocol in cataloguing operations. The library administration should foster the implementation of specialized technological education and training, as well as establish mentorship initiatives to foster more equitable utilization of requisite technology in library operations and services among academic librarians

NAVIGATING DUAL ROLES: THE CHALLENGES OF ANGLICAN PRIESTS IN BALANCING MINISTRY AND FAMILY LIFE IN THE DIOCESE ON THE NIGER

    No full text
Anglican priests in the Diocese on the Niger face significant challenges balancing ministerial duties and family life due to factors like traditional expectations, financial constraint, and insufficient support systems. The paper exposes the challenges Anglica priests face with reference to the Diocese on the Niger, as they strive to balance their ministerial and family. It discovers that the unpredictable nature of pastoral work, which includes travelling, emotional stress, and financial constraints, frequently places a challenge on marital relationships, parenting responsibilities, and family well-being. It examines factors such as time management, financial limitations, and emotional burdens accompanying their calling. The paper, therefore, suggests that adherence to ecclesiastical principles, integrity, modesty, and robust church support can help priests achieve a balanced ministry despite these difficulties.&nbsp

CULTURAL LAG: THE ACHILLES\u27 HEEL OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY WITH REFERENCE TO ARTS, CULTURE, AND THE HUMANITIES

    No full text
This paper interrogates the phenomenon of cultural lag as the deep-rooted flaw undermining the coherence and sustainability of contemporary society. With a philosophical lens and an interdisciplinary approach spanning arts, culture, science, and technology, the author explores how material progress continually outpaces non-material values, ethical frameworks, and cultural consciousness. Drawing upon William Ogburn\u27s theory, complemented by African wisdom traditions and global scholarly thought, this study identifies and critiques the ethical chasm between innovation and introspection, productivity and purpose. This paper argues for a revitalization of the humanities as a sacred compass, the ethical rehabilitation of institutions, and the reimagination of education as a cultural cure. The goal is not just to critique but to prophetically chart a holistic path forward that harmonizes science, spirit, and society.&nbsp
