    No full text
Workplace hostility is costly to the wellbeing of employees and detrimental to sustainable development of Nigerian organisations. Consequently, this study examined organizational frustration and psychological wellbeing as predictors of workplace hostility among non-teaching staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State. A total number of one hundred and twenty (120) non-teaching staff participated in the study. The participants were drawn from eight units of the administrative arm of the university using simple random sampling technique. The participants were aged between 25 to 50 years, with a mean age of 35.02 and a standard deviation of 6.46. The Workplace Hostility Scale, Organizational Frustration Scale and Ryff’s Scale of Psychological Wellbeing were instruments used to generate data for the study. The study tested three hypotheses. The first hypothesis stated that organizational frustration will significantly and positively predict workplace hostility and was accepted (β = .392, t= -3.580, p<.05). This result showed that organizational frustration was positively related to workplace hostility among workers. Hypothesis two which stated that psychological wellbeing will significantly and positively predict workplace hostility was rejected (β =-.009, t= -.086, P>.05). Hypothesis three which stated that organizational frustration and psychological wellbeing will both significantly predict workplace hostility was also rejected because the interaction between organizational frustration and psychological wellbeing did not positively predict workplace hostility. These findings have important implications for understanding the factors that contribute to hostility among workers and highlights the consequences of hostile behaviors in organizations. Therefore, it is recommended that employers prioritize the wellbeing of their workers and consider seeking psychological interventions to improve their working environment

Spatiotemporal estimation of tree cover loss in comparison with land surface temperatures using remote sensing approach in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria

    No full text
Human pressures have a unique impact on the carbon cycle and forest ecosystem resilience The loss of tree cover (TC). The increase in urban areas contributes significantly to the loss of vegetation cover (VC), which accelerates carbon emissions, increasing land surface temperature (LST) and global warming. This study used remote sensing and GIS techniques to estimate the Land Use/Land Cover (LU/LC) changes by focusing on VC loss and its impact on LST and carbon emissions in Nnamdi Azikiwe University during 2001-2021. The study’s findings confirmed an reduction of VC of about -39% from 2001- 2011 with around 27.2% increase of vegetation cover loss, and corresponding LST rise from 22˚C to 35˚C. The trends were continuous, with a decrease in VC loss by -30% during 2011–2021, contributing 26˚C– 42˚C LST rise in the study area. Results indicate that the massive amount of carbon attracted the sun’s rays due to the TC loss and raising the surface temperature by 20˚C since 2001, which directly contributing to global warming. Thus, to mitigate climate hazards, efforts to slow urbanization to reduce pollution gateways and increase carbon sinks through afforestation will significantly contribute to protecting humanity from global warming

    No full text
Militancy and war are two of the many aggressive models of insurrection adopted by a marginalised group of people against social institutions over perceived long-term structural violence against them. The implication of adopting these extremely violent approaches as a means of seeking redress is that physical violence which has a more direct and immediate negative effect on human lives becomes the ultimate means of attaining social justice. This study looks at the representation of militancy and war violence in two selected films, namely; David Attwood’s Blood and Oil (2010) and Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close (2019) to compare how militancy and war violence influence social injustice and justice in the society. The study is qualitative research that hinged on the interpretation and analyses of the selected films on Content Analysis approach of qualitative research method. However, Johan Galtung’s Structural theory of violence is applied to interrogate the dynamics of violence in the films and how they impact society. Findings revealed that structural violence is a major factor that influences the use of militancy and war by exploited social groups to defend their lives and demand justice. Consequently, the study recommends the devolution of militancy and war as a means of seeking restitution because of the various negative effects on the human and social lives of the people. In conclusion, the study notes that film as a medium of representation can be used to deemphasise the use of war and militant approaches in society

POLITICS AND CLASS DIALECTICS IN NGUGI WA THIONG’O’S WIZARD OF THE CROW

    No full text
This article explored politics and class dialectics in the work of Ngugi Wa Thiong’o. To achieve this, the study used chapters one and four of Frantz Fanon’s postcolonial theoretical paradigm using textual analysis and the historicocritical method. In the narratives, the writer vividly portrayed neglect, political corruption, unequal relationships, power, politics of resistance, neocolonialism, and globalisation in East African nations, which are occasioned by political leaders who have metamorphosed into colonial masters. The evidence from the primary text showed that the native ruler of Aburiria and his cabinet, who had inherited power since the departure of their colonial masters, became irresponsible and insensitive to their duties, but rather preoccupied with looting the public treasury. The writer explored the various struggles within Kenyan and African societies, particularly by the oppressed, through his activists, Nyawira and Kamiti, to expose and ridicule the carefree attitude of African leaders towards African culture and to create a society that recognises all. The findings showed that the writer succeeded and used his novel Wizard of the Crow to explore the challenges left behind by Western imperialists. The study therefore recommended people-orientated leadership and raising consciousness about the masses to rise above the complacent acceptance of misrule in their respective African nations

The population of this study was made up of six federal government parastatals in Anambra state that were randomly selected, with a population of five hundred and fifty-eight (558) employees. Simple random sampling was used to select 40 employees in each of the parastatals selected. This yielded a total sample size of two hundred and forty (240) employees. The instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire. The reliability of the study was confirmed using the Cronbach alpha statistics which yielded coefficients of 0.769 and 0.821 for the workplace incivility questionnaire and performance of federal parastatals questionnaire. The 240 copies of questionnaire that were administered, 236 copies were returned and were certified fit for study. The data generated were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). At 0.05 level of significance and 3 degrees of freedom, the calculated value t (2.99) is greater than the critical value of t (2.35). Consequently, the null hypothesis was rejected while the alternative which suggests that workers disrespectful behaviours have significant relationship with turnover intentions in federal parastatals in Anambra State was accepted. The study therefore recommends among others that, civility should be imbibed as one of their core values of these parastatals, and there is need to protect their workers against discrimination and encourage them to respect each other’s differences in order to reduce labour turnover and increase employees’ retention in the organizations
