The study examined effect and economic rejuvenation strategies in palm oil processing during and post COVID-19 in Irele Local Government Area, Ondo State. Multistage sampling technique was employed in the selection of 215 respondents for the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaire and responses were collated and analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. Findings revealed that threshing of bunch was the most tedious activities experienced during palm oil processing and that COVID-19 affected the operational activities of palm oil processing as the lockdown hindered major operational activities of palm oil, as well as caused a total pause of operational activities of palm oil processing. In addition, the gross margin during COVID-19 in 2020 was N435,000.00 and the post COVID-19 gross margin in 2023 was N565,000.00. Regression result indicated that household size (p< 0.001), processing experience (p< 0.001), labour (p< 0.05) and threshing cost (p< 0.001) have positive coefficients and are statistically significant factors that contributed to profit in palm oil processing. The study therefore recommended that farmers should be encouraged to form co-operative societies to solve the problems of inadequate information and cultivation knowledge as well as give the avenue for earnest government intervention measures in case of any outbreak or crises

The study developed an optimal arable crop combination plans that would maximize the net returns of the cassava based smallholder farmers in Ebonyi. State, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 80 smallholder cassava-based farmers. Well-structured questionnaire was used to obtain information from eighty (80) stratified randomly selected cassava based crop farmers in rural communities of Ebonyi State. Descriptive statistics, farm budgeting technique and linear programming model were used to analyze the data obtained. The LP result showed that 0.51ha of maize/cowpea, 0.52ha of Cassava and Maize (Ca/Ym,) 0.54ha of Cassava, Maize and Melon (Ca/Mz/Me), 0.66ha of Cassava, Maize and Yam (Ca/Mz/Ym), 0.58ha of Cassava, Maize and Groundnut (Ca/Mz/Gn) and 00.43ha of Cassava, Maize, Yam and Okro (Ca/Mz/Ym/Ok) were prescribed as solutions to maximize net returns in the optimal plan. The optimal net return was N351,185.92 which is 18.18% higher than the existing plan. Cassava, Maize, Yam and Pumpkin (Ca/Mz/Ym/Pu), enterprise had the highest marginal opportunity cost while Cassava and Maize (Ca/Mz) had the least. However, Capital and labour constituted the limiting resources in the optimal plan. It was concluded that the smallholder cassava-based farmers have the potential to maximize net returns as resources were not optimally allocated in the existing plan for cassava based crop activities. Farmers should therefore adopt the optimum farm plans as prescribed in the LP solution

    No full text
Children are the world’s most valuable resources and its best hope for the future.2 Theytherefore deserve special protection and care to enable them reach their full potential. The lawsprotecting children in Nigeria set forth favorable conditions for the Nigerian child, and they aimto give children the best possible existence. The Child Rights Act being the hallmark for theprotection and care of children in Nigeria is inextricably linked to the standard of care andprotection accorded to children worldwide as it is a domestication of the United NationsConventions on the Rights of a Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of theChild, applicable to other countries internationally and regionally. The question however whichneeds to be answered is how much these laws have affected Children’s lives in order to changethe story of the typical Nigerian child, whose life has never before been assured of a daily mealor decent household. This work discusses the laws and policies in place to protect the NigerianChild. It uses the doctrinal methodology employing the use of Conventions, statutes, case laws, journal articles, internet sources as well as reports of various authors. In addition, it usesanalysis as tools to assess the efficacy of these laws and the challenges militating against theirability to effectively protect children

EXAMINATION OF THE DOCTRINE OF POLITICAL QUESTION UNDER THE ELECTORAL ACT 2022

    No full text
The "political question" doctrine refers to the principle that certain issues are moreappropriately addressed by the executive or legislative branches of government, rather thanby the judiciary. In the context of Nigeria\u27s electoral process, this doctrine emphasizes theboundaries of judicial intervention in politically sensitive matters, particularly regardingelections and related controversies. Intra-party conflicts have been part and parcel ofNigeria democratic journey. In recent times they have become much more pervasive andhave assumed crisis dimensions, with negative implications for democratic stability andconsolidation. This paper examines the relevant concepts, theories of the doctrine ofpolitical question, the judiciary and the doctrine of political question and the Electoral Act2022 and the doctrine of political question as well as the circumstances where the court caninterfere in the internal affairs of a political party. This will go a long way in strengtheningNigeria’s democracy and the doctrine of separation of powers

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE HEALTH AND SAFETY LAWS IN NIGERIA AND OTHER SELECTED JURISDICTIONS

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to provide legal perspectives on health and safety standards vis-à-visNigerian laws. The paper also compares the current health and safety practices in Nigeria with otherselected countries who have established legislations on health and safety measures within theirjurisdictions, especially the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU).The research finds that although Nigeria and the United States of America have well-defined andestablished laws including the systems for the protection and the safety of the employees, however, theenforcement mechanisms of both countries do not serve as a sufficient deterrence for those who violatethe laws. The significance of this study is hinged on its ability to provide valid recommendations that arerelevant to occupational safety and health standards in Nigeria. This remains a necessity given theobservations that occupational safety and health measures are inadequate due to a variety of structuralissues such as weak enforcement mechanisms, lack of skilled manpower including ineffective penaltiesamong others. While non-deterrent fines and standard adoption are problematic in the United States, inthe EU, implementing the law has been a challenge due to issue on work-related diseases. This is furthercompounded by emerging risks, issues related to technologies including demographic changes. The paperconcludes with suggestions and recommendations for better occupational safety and health managementpractices in the Nigeria and other selected jurisdictions. The paper adopts a doctrinal researchmethodology in the analysis

UNLOCKING THE POTENTIALS OF NIGERIA’S COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENT THROUGH THE UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION ON CONTRACTS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL SALE OF GOODS 1980

    No full text
This paper proposes the ratification of United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Saleof Goods (CISG) 1980 in Nigeria. It analyses the success of the Convention, drawing analogy fromjurisdictions that have ratified the Convention and those that have not. The paper draws comparisonbetween the Sale of Goods Act 1893 (a statute of general application), being the extant principal lawgoverning sales transaction in Nigeria and the CISG 1980. It discusses the limitations, likely andpracticable obstacles to its application in the event of its ratification in Nigeria, and proffered possiblesolutions to the obstacles and limitations. In carrying out this work, the paper reviewed a vast number ofliteratures, cases and statutes, employing the doctrinal approach and the analytical technique. The paperfound that the Sale of Goods Act 1893 aside being obsolete, left much to be desired, as the Act does notreflect the divergent legal system, and global nature of modern International sales transaction, hencethere is need to incorporate the CISG; a common sales code, (albeit the legislative magical wand) thatunifies the legal system of both civil and common law jurisdictions, and reflects the global, and modernpractices of international sales transaction into Nigeria\u27s legal order. The researcher thereforerecommends that ratification of the convention in Nigeria is now of necessity considering the surgingincrease in cross border trade and modernity of sales transaction among citizens of different nations

    No full text
This study examined selected wood qualities of Tectona grandis Linn. F. plantation in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria for sustainable Management. Five even-aged merchantable teak stands with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 50 cm were randomly felled. Wood samples from DBH, base (10%), middle (50%), and top (90%) axial positions and partitioned into radial zones (core, middle, and outer growth rings). The physical properties: Moisture Content (MC), Density(D), Longitudinal Shrinkage (LS), Radial Shrinkage (RS), Tangential Shrinkage (TS), and Volumetric Shrinkage (VS), and mechanical properties: Dimensional Stability (DS), Modulus of Elasticity (MOE), Modulus of Rupture (MOR), and Maximum Compressive Strength (MCS) were determined using standard procedures. Data collected were subjected to descriptive, analysis of variance and correlation analyses. Significant means were separated using Least significant difference. The results revealed that MC, D, LS, RS, TS and VS had pooled means (axial and radial variations) of 12.18%, 636.08kg/m3, 2.22%, 3.98%, 3.84%, and 7.81% respectively. Wood density and shrinkage coefficients varied slightly across the axial and radial positions of the stands. The DS, MOE, MOR and MCS (parallel to the grain) had pooled means of 1.85, 985.46N/mm2, 43.30N/mm2, and 49.20 N/mm2, respectively. Significance (p<0.05) were recorded across all the radial axis. A positive and significant correlation was observed between MOE and MOR. The study concludes that the plantation had more dense wood which contributes to stronger and more durable wood, making it suitable for various structural applications. Hence, regular silvicultural management practices are recommended to maintain the wood stiffness, strength and dimensional stability
