Many linguists and researchers have investigated different problems relating to foreign language vocabulary acquisition. Some of their studies focused mainly on the processes and strategies used by learners in second and foreign language vocabulary acquisition. Meanwhile, panel survey that systematically documented acquisition of French vocabulary by the anglophone Nigerian learners is still scare. In this study, we investigated the quantity and quality of lexical development of the anglophone learners and factors responsible for the mistakes observed in their writing. The study investigated 20 learners of French from their first year of study up to end of their final year of studies in the university. Two different test exercises were administered on the same subjects from their first year all through their fourth year of studies. The first exercise is on lexis and structure exercises while the second exercise is on multiple choice question. The objective of the study is to evaluate the quantity and quality of the vocabulary knowledge of the learners within the space of four years. The results of the study concluded that there is relatively no significant development in the quantity and mastery of lexis that is related to registers by the learners. The study therefore, recommends continuous reading as strategies that can significantly help to improve the quantity and quality of French vocabulary in the learners. Also, that the French vocabulary and lexis and structure should be included as a course of study in French language curriculum (B.A. and BA. ED) and taught to the learners from the first year up to the final year of studies.

Learning a foreign language such as French in a multilingual country requires knowledge of its phonology. Hausa speakers who have already established the phonological system of English as official language and Hausa as their mother tongue, face a serious problem in learning French. Learners are unable in some certain situations to correctly produce some sounds of the French language. Most of these learners try to apply their phonological knowledge of mother tongue to the French language. This research aims at studying, comparing, analyzing and describing the phonological systems of French and Hausa languages to highlight the points of convergence of the phonology under study. Despite this problem, there are points of convergence which are supposed to facilitate learning and it is on this background that the researcher wants to explore the similar phonological features in the two languages. Moreover, despite these two languages being genetically and typologically distant, there are always phonological features that are common to these two languages and it is one this note that the researcher will carry out this study. The researcher is going to apply the contrastive method of the linguist Robert Lado through comparing French phonemes and those of Hausa. The results of our research show that French and Hausa have similar phonemes, but the sounds do not behave in the same way in the two different languages, but this does not constitute a major obstacle in the pronunciation of sounds that are similar in the two languages.

There is no denying the fact that many languages of the world are vanishing at an irrepressible pace, and the status quo of many indigenous languages in Nigeria is an accurate mirror to this reality. According to a UNESCO report, around 27 languages in Nigeria are in the danger zone. There are many causative factors behind this situation. One important factor can be the parents, not teaching their local languages to their young ones. This paper attempts to analyse the role of parents and especially mothers in the transmission and preservation of languages. The key aim is to investigate whether or not; the mothers in Nigerian society are promoting their local or native dialects. For this purpose, a survey research is conducted. The tool of the study is a questionnaire that is administered to a sample population of mothers. The responses collected from a population sample (comprising of almost 300 mothers) exposes the fact that at present a great number of mothers and especially educated mothers tend to emphasizese the learning of Pidgin (for general communication) and English (for educational purposes) among their children rather than their native dialects. The situation is worse with the Igbo language. In this regard, (UNESCO) Advisory Committee on Language Pluralism and Multi-language Education predicted that Igbo language and by implication, culture, may be heading for extinction, and subsumed by other stronger Nigerian languages by 2025, if nothing is done by its speakers (Abanobi, 2012).This is alarming and demands certain actions on the part of the government to sensitise the public on the importance of their native languages. The paper suggests the formulation of policies besides the broadcasting of some awareness programmes for the common public, to avoid a heritage of ‘zombie languages’

The realities of the Coronavirus pandemic may have stimulated some positive trends in information resources and information sharing networks given the surge of zoom meetings and webinars during the lockdown as safe platforms for information exchange. The current study evaluated lecturers’ attitude towards the use of zoom and webinars as contact-less methods of information exchange and resource sharing among the academic staff of Federal Polytechnic, Oko. The design of the study was mixed method research design (descriptive survey and factorial). A total of 133 lecturers (85 males and 48 females) whose ages ranged from 25 to 60 years with mean age of 47yrs participated in the study. The method of selection for the sample is multi-stage sampling technique which integrated purposive and systematic sampling techniques. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire developed by the researcher with a reliability correlation value of r = 0.86 obtained between the first test and re-test after a three-week interval period. The pilot test was conducted via WhatsApp social media platform. Descriptive and the z-test statistics were adopted for analysis and the result revealed that respondents’ attitude towards the use of zoom and webinars as contact-less method of information exchange and resource sharing is negative with a mean midpoint of 3.12; while gender and lecturers experience had no significant difference on the attitude of lecturers on use of zoom and webinar platforms as contact-less media for information exchange and information resources sharing.. However, older lecturers significantly differed from the younger lecturers; with the younger having  positive attitude towards the use of zoom and webinars as contact-less method of information exchange and resource sharing at z(c) = 1.96, p < .05. It is recommended that tech know-how and competence in use of ICTs should be included in the requisite skills for employment besides academic competence. Regular training and retraining of staff on core technology usage should be provided for reskilling

    No full text
The revolution in digital technology has been witnessed in every sphere of human endeavour butmostly felt in information and communication technology where it has transformed the landscapeof business. Digitalization which would have been in the interest of copyrighted works has turnedout to be a cog in the wheel of progress where intellectual property protection is concerned.Digitalization has muddled the water considering the extent it has been aiding and abatingintellectual crimes. To address the rising need for copyright protection in Nigeria, series of lawshave been made and many international treaties ratified in a bid to checkmate the exploitation anduse of copyrighted materials without permission or acknowledgement. Using doctrinal researchmethodology, this paper examined the legal impact of digital technology on copyright protectionin Nigeria. Primary and secondary sources of data were used. The primary sources includestatutory enactments, case laws and other relevant international treaties. Secondary sourcesinclude textbooks, law journals, periodicals, opinion of writers and information from the internet. The paper found that while a new and commendable copyright Act has been enacted, the Act is yetto be reconciled with other existing laws on the subject matter. It has therefore, among others, recommended that all laws in Nigeria which influences modern technology should be revisited andamended to complement each other

A Critique of the Limitation of the Right of Fair Hearing by the Exclusion of Hearsay Evidence

Judicial proceedings under the Nigerian judicial system are adversarial in nature. In this system, the parties either in prosecuting or defending their cases must present sufficient evidence to beentitled to judgment as per the allegation(s) contained in their pleadings or information.Meanwhile, the judge under this system sits as an independent umpire to examine the evidencepresented for and/or against the claim or defence by the parties. The Court is to be guided by thelaw and rules of evidence as to who has the burden and standard of proof required as well as whatevidence to admit or exclude. The law of evidence, being a matter under the exclusive LegislativeList, is enacted by the National Assembly and regulates the rules on proceedings relating toevidence in most Nigerian Courts in addition to judicial decisions as well as other recognizedLaws, Charters, or Protocols. The Nigerian Constitution guarantees as fundamental to hercitizens, the rights to fair hearing, right to have their causes heard within a reasonable time andto defend themselves in person or by legal practitioners of their choice. Would it not thereforeamount to unconstitutionality, when the law of evidence which is largely adjectival that should notbe found contrary to the provisions of the Constitution, patently excludes from admissibility, evidence which are categorized as hearsay? This paper, using the doctrinal research methodology, answers this question in the affirmative and offers some recommendations for improvements inthis area of law and practice

This article examines the recent attitude of Nigerian courts towards the finality of arbitral awards, throughthe lens of the Supreme Court’s decision in Metroline Nigeria Limited & Others v Dikko [2021] 2 NWLR(Pt.1761) 422 (SC). It sets out the implication of the court’s decision and, with the aid of other Nigeriancourt decisions, demonstrates that Nigerian courts are more likely to disregard frivolous efforts tochallenge the enforcement of valid final arbitral awards. Instead, Nigerian courts typically encourageutmost respect for the arbitral process by respecting valid arbitration agreements which consenting partieshave entered in relation to an arbitrable dispute and enforcing any final, valid arbitral award that is issuedpursuant to such agreements.Key words:, , ,
