RESTRUCTURING NIGERIA FOR POSITIVE CHANGE: NOLLYWOOD AND THE BIAFRAN STORY

    No full text
The Biafran/ Nigerian Civil War is a story of horror, of terror, of hunger, of valour and of so many other experiences that are associated with war and the struggle for survival and self-determination. Its hydra-headedness stems from the varied perspectives with which different factions involved in the war view the conflict. It is a truism that most civil wars and civil struggles of nations constitute invaluable sources of thematic materials for their narratives. Unfortunately, the story of Biafra continues to be neglected and side lined by the Nigerian film industry to the amazement of many pundits and theatre critics. The puzzle behind the negation of the potentials of the Biafra story for the evolving industry constitutes the problem of this study. It examines the potentials and trappings the Nigerian film industry can tap from this historic but enigmatic encounter. It also highlights numerous advantages the Nigerian society stands to gain if the story of Biafra finds its way into the mainstream media, especially at this time when Nigerians are clamouring for restructuring and change. The study adopts mixed method of research in sourcing and analysing its data. The conclusion reached is that the Biafra story has been underutilized and if adequately explored has the capacity to reposition not only the film industry of Nigeria but also the Nigerian sociopolitical narrative

BOARD ATTRIBUTES AND TAX PLANNING OF LISTED MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN NIGERIA

    No full text
The study investigates the relationship between board attributes and tax planning of 29 listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria, out of 117 listed non-financial service firms as of 31st December 2012, for a period of eleven years from 2012 to 2022. The study extracts data from annual reports and accounts of the listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The study aligns with correlational research design and positivism research philosophy. Board independence, board gender, board meetings, and board education were used as a proxy of board attributes. The Effective Tax Rate (ETR) method is applied to measure the tax planning of the sampled firms using the multiple regression technique. The findings of the analysis reveal that board meetings and board gender affect ETR positively and significantly. Hence, board independence reveals a negative and significant effect on the ETR of listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria. On the other hand, board education proves to have no significant impact on the ETR of listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The study recommends that the board meeting and board gender should be increased to enhance tax planning activities, which subsequently reduces the tax burden of listed manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The study provides policy implications for the board of directors and decision-makers in the decision-making process regarding the proportion of female directors, independent directors, number of meetings, and educational qualification.  &nbsp

FIRM PHYSIOGNOMIES AND FINANCIAL DISTRESS: EVIDENCE FROM LISTED CONSUMER GOODS FIRMS ON THE NIGERIAN EXCHANGE GROUP

    No full text
This study considers how firm-specific characteristics such as firm size, liquidity, and profitability influence the financial distress of listed consumer goods firms on the Nigerian Exchange Group. This study used the Altman Z-Score model as a proxy for financial stability in conveying an idea of the financial robustness of the sector amidst the fluctuating economy of Nigeria. The results of panel data analysis, which covered the period from 2012 to 2023 for 16 Consumer Goods Firms, indicated that firm size and liquidity have a significant positive effect on financial stability; large and liquid firms demonstrate lower probabilities of distress. Profitability also had a positive effect on financial stability but with a smaller effect size. These findings underscore the critical role that firm physiognomies play in enhancing resilience against financial distress and point toward strategies that should emphasize the management of an increase in firm scale, liquidity management, and a focus on long-term profitability with a view to fostering financial stability

    No full text
This study explores the dynamic interplay between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human Intelligence in business operations, focusing on Anambra State, Nigeria. As AI technologies reshape the business landscape by enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making, the need for a strategic integration with human intelligence becomes increasingly vital. This research highlights the complementary strengths of both intelligences, emphasizing that while AI excels in data analysis and automation, human intelligence brings creativity, emotional understanding, and ethical judgment to the forefront. The study applied qualitative research approach using thematic analysis of which a descriptive research design was used to gain an in-depth understanding of the subject matter. Convenient sampling techniques were employed in selecting 5 participants for the interviews.  All interviews were transcribed verbatim and uploaded into MAXQDA Analytics Pro 2020 (qualitative data analysis software). The coding scheme was systematically applied to all transcripts through multiple close readings of the data. Both semantic/explicit content and latent content requiring interpretative analysis were captured by the codes. Through qualitative interviews with small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, the study reveals the advantages of AI adoption, the irreplaceable value of human insight, and the challenges organizations face in this integration process. Ultimately, the findings underscore the necessity for businesses to embrace a balanced approach, harnessing the transformative potential of AI while preserving the human touch essential for innovation and sustainable growth

    No full text
The general objective of this study was to assess the effects of cattle rustling on agro-pastoralists in Danko-Wasagu LGA, Kebbi State. The study also aims to investigate the losses incurred before and after cattle rustling, and identify intervention mechanisms adopted to address cattle rustling in the study area. The study utilized a multi-stage sampling technique. A sample size of 183 respondents was proportionately drawn from a sampling frame of 3,650 agro-pastoralists. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages) to summarize responses and a paired t-test to compare losses before and after cattle rustling attacks. Results indicated that a majority of respondents (95.1%) were engaged in livestock production as their primary occupation. A large proportion of respondents (92.3%) reported that seasonal movement in search of water and pasture was the main factor associated with cattle rustling. Most of the respondents also reported loss of lives (83.1%) and cattle (95.6%) as the greater effect of cattle raiding in their communities. The t-test revealed a significant difference was recorded by the agro-pastoralist before and after cattle rustling. This study recommends that stakeholders establish appropriate reforms on grazing reserves in relation to access to pasture and water. The government should adequately facilitate the security personnel with sufficient equipment, training, and the use of technological advances to boost their capacity to curb cattle rustling

    No full text
The study focused on a decade (2015–2025) trend analysis of Nigerian food security and nutrition. Secondary data were employed to collect agriculture’s share of Nigeria’s annual budgetary allocations, agriculture’s GDP share, malnutrition rates, Human Development Index (HDI), and food price inflation (Consumer Price Index). Data were analysed using trend analysis. Results showed that despite continued government efforts since 1972, Nigeria has not achieved food self-sufficiency. Rising food insecurity, malnutrition, and inflation indicate persistent systemic challenges. The study concludes that food security and nutrition remain unachieved despite numerous agricultural policies. It recommends that the Nigerian government allocate at least 10% of the national budget to agriculture to foster sustainable growth, employment, food security, export earnings, and improved life expectancy and per capita income. Rigorous monitoring and evaluation of agricultural projects are also advised
