Who you know and what you know: student interaction in online discussions
No full textThis is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.The dynamics of how students respond to each other during online discussions in a blended learning environment remains under-explored in the literature. How this technology shapes interaction when used in conjunction with traditional teaching methods and the practices of learners in these multi-site situations is a significant educational issue. This study was an action research project within the Faculty of Business and Finance at Holmesglen Institute of TAFE in Melbourne, Victoria. Participants were first year students in a 'business communications' subject, who were offered four discussion forums on a voluntary basis. Using mixed-methods, the study drew on social interaction constructs such as: exchange theory; reciprocity; and propinquity to explore practices within a discussion forum in a blended-learning setting. In addition to confirming these well-established constructs accounting for student-interaction, the issue of responding to others perceived as 'knowledgeable' was uncovered, and the mechanisms behind this particular response were examined further. The study reveals an assemblage of practices overlapping and inter-locking with the emergent learning experience, in both online and traditional spaces.BusinessHolmesglen Institut

Using standardized patients in an undergraduate mental health simulation
No full textItem availability may be restricted - (login required for Holmesglen staff and students)Simulation is a technique of reproducing the performance of a desired circumstance or procedure by means of an equivalent scenario for the purpose of observation or tuition. The overwhelming shortfall in this process is the absence of the human element-the individual patient's response to illness. Little is known about the use of simulation in the mental health component of an undergraduate curriculum. This pilot study aimed to explore the impact of an integrated-simulation approach on second-year undergraduate nursing students' preparedness for a mental health placement. Students completed a questionnaire pre- and post-clinical placement to determine whether the simulations improved their confidence about communication and assessment skill development. Students found the experience of engaging in a mental health simulation with standardized patients a positive experience. They noted that the experience increased their confidence, encouraged professionalism, enhanced their understanding of mental illness presentations, and was also clinically realistic. The benefits of using simulation to address mental health placement shortfalls mean that all students can be guaranteed a controlled and safe interaction with a mental health client. Simulation should not be seen as the "poor cousin" to hospital-based clinical placement. Rather it provides a comprehensive opportunity to engage in an immersive, secure, and innovative learning environment where safe clinical decision-making opportunities are abundant.Allied Health Services and ScienceHolmesglen InstituteMonash Universit

How learning English facilitates integration for adult migrants: the Jarrah Language Centre experience. Occasional paper
No full textThis is an open-access report distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.Using interviews with adult migrants over a period of two years, the author looked at how undertaking an English as a second language (ESL) class helps to facilitate integration into Australian society. Overall, not being competent and confident in speaking English was seen by all (migrants and ESL teachers) as the biggest barrier to integration. If migrants were confident in speaking English they were able to find employment, move into mainstream study and engage more in social activities.
