The Nominal Group Technique: Generating Consensus in Nursing Research
Item is not available from this repository. Link to the published version - subscription maybe required. The purpose of this article is to describe the Nominal Group Technique and its application as a consensus-generating approach in nursing research. The approach incorporates face-to-face meetings to explore opinions, generate ideas, and determine priorities. The nominal group technique process, which is based on a study designed to develop a nursing student clinical placement (clinical practicum) evaluation tool, is described. Advantages of the approach include creative face-to-face discussions with minimal resource demands. The nominal group technique is beneficial and can be used to achieve consensus in nursing research, but a lack of anonymity may preclude the process in some investigations. Hospital falls prevention with patient education: a scoping review
This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution LicenseThis critical review scopes patient falls education interventions for hospitals. The quality of the educational designs under-pinning patient falls education programmes was also evaluated. The outcomes of patient-centred falls prevention programs were considered for a range of hospital settings and diagnoses.NursingHolmesglen InstituteLa Trobe UniversityCurtin Universit

Entrepreneurial leadership in the mixed sector provider
The environment in which tertiary education providers operate, the contemporary education landscape, is shaped by government policy, quasi-education markets and information and communications technologies. For the tertiary education provider to appropriately respond to changes in this landscape, effective leadership is required. The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership capability of staff in leadership roles, and how they describe their role as a leader at South Eastern Polytechnic (SEP), a mixed sector tertiary education provider. Furthermore, the focus was to ascertain the understanding these staff have of innovation and entrepreneurship, and the leadership capabilities required to build and support innovation and entrepreneurship at a mixed sector provider.Centre for Energy and InfrastructureHolmesglen InstituteUniversity of Canberr
Educating health professionals to optimise falls screening in hospitals: protocol for a mixed methods study
Open access journalFalls in hospitals remain a major challenge to patient safety. All hospitalised adults are at risk of falling during their inpatient stay, though this risk is not always realised by patients and clinicians. This study will evaluate the outcomes of a hospital clinician education program that teaches clinicians how to screen for falls risk and assign mitigation strategies using clinical reasoning, rather than relying on a standardised falls risk assessment tool (FRAT). The education program aims to increase clinician knowledge, motivation and confidence in screening falls risk and selecting individual falls prevention interventions. Perceptions of the education intervention will also be examined.NursingHolmesglen InstituteSchool of Allied Health, La Trobe Centre for Sport and Exercises Medicine Research, La Trobe University, Melbourne.Healthscope, North Eastern Rehabilitation Centre, Ivanhoe, Victoria
Anxiety, flipped approach and self-efficacy: exploring nursing student outcomes
This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.Self-efficacy is crucial for student success. Studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between flipped learning approach and self-efficacy. Anxiety, however, can reduce self-efficacy. Testing the relationship between the flipped approach and self-efficacy by flipping a nursing module within an externally-imposed and once-off anxiety-inducing context. Students completed a self-efficacy survey before (n = 71) and after (n = 91) a compressed semester, which provided the anxiety-inducing context. Pre-semester self-efficacy was 2.93/4, and post-semester was 2.98/4. The results demonstrated no significant change in students' self-efficacy. We argue the flipped approach counters anxiety-inducing effects to maintain self-efficacy. In less anxiety-inducing contexts, we argue the flipped approach would develop students' confidence, capability, persistence and strength beliefs, collectively enhancing self-efficacy perceptions.NursingHolmesglen InstituteMonash UniversitySwinburne Institute of Technolog
Where to from here? Why Australia needs a broader tertiary framework
Australia has made a tentative step towards creating a fit for purpose 21st century tertiary sector.
The Australian government’s reforms in relation to university colleges can be a key mechanism to
strengthen and enhance the reputation of VET and produce positive outcomes and pathways for
students. Students who know how to do things and importantly understand the why
