Brief research report: "Nothing about us, without us": a case study of the outer sanctum podcast and trends in Australian independent media to drive intersectional representation

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.Alternative and independent sports media platforms create custom content that reflects a diversity of voices and representation of athletes, sports and issues that are not covered in meaningful ways in traditional sports media. While these new media outlets often set out to redress the lack of diversity and intersectional approaches to traditional sports media, they are also seeking ways to drive even more change. This in an interesting and important movement to interrogate as these platforms are not only predominantly unfunded, passion projects created by those marginalized groups. This brief research report provides a case study into this emerging alternative media space and its impact in driving change in an ever-evolving sports media landscape. We also discuss the problematic nature of intersectional-redressing work falling on those who still occupy the margins. This report uses a case study of an independent Australian rules football platform, The Outer Sanctum podcast, to focus on these key areas. The case study investigates how this outlet has worked to increase the visibility and profile of marginalized and underrepresented voices discussing football in new ways. It follows their journey as they have taken steps to improve their own diversity, enacting their mantra "nothing about us, without us," and proactively becoming more intersectional in their content producing journey. This research report will present key findings from the work of this media outlet to drive change and point to the learnings mainstream media can adopt to meaningfully embed intersectional approaches to sports media as core business.Sports Media and Sport Business DegreesHolmesglen InstituteSwinburne University of Technolog

An integrated practical placement programme for students with disability: a pilot study

    No full text
Open access.Supported work internship programmes for young adults with disability are an evidence-based model, leading to greater employment outcomes. This mixed methods pilot study evaluated the experiences of students, supervisors and a project coordinator, who participated in an Integrated Practical Placement (IPP) programme for students with disability in Australia. Intervention students (n = 10) completed 3, 9-week rotations, and accessed personal placement support and employment coaches. Comparison students (n = 38) completed 3, 2-week placements without additional support. Intervention students perceived significantly greater initial changes in work skills (p < 0.01) and work readiness (p < 0.05). Intervention students reported development of communication and self-organisational skills and stressed the value of staff support. Post programme 70% of intervention students gained employment, compared with 15.4% of comparison students. The findings suggest an evidence-based supported employment programme emphasising personalised assessment and training, could provide individuals with disability the required skills to enable successful employment.NursingHolmesglen InstituteThe Royal Children's Hospital Melbourn

Interprofessional education to implement patient falls education in hospitals: lessons learned

    No full text
Open AccessThe aim of this study was to design, deliver and evaluate an interprofessional education programme for healthcare professionals on how to implement a modified version of the safe recovery programme to prevent falls in hospitalized patients. Mixed methods design incorporating pre- and post education surveys and individual semi-structured interviews. Thirty-four health professional participants attended a 1-h face-to-face or Zoom® interprofessional education session to learn how to deliver an evidence-based patient falls prevention education strategy, the modified Safe Recovery Programme. A 1-hour education session was insufficient to build full confidence to deliver the Safe Recovery Programme. There was no statistically significant change in participant views on interprofessional collaboration. Participants recommended prior consultation and preparation before delivery of IPE, with additional opportunities for discussion and feedback during implementation with patients. The findings highlight the importance of interprofessional education for evidence-based interventions in hospitals. Health professionals value education that is timely, interactive, realistic and engaging.NursingHolmesglen InstituteLa Trobe UniversityHealthscope HospitalsNorthern Health, Epping, VictoriaVictorian Rehabilitation Centre, Glen Waverly, VictoriaJames Cook Universit
