Sustainable transport development options for Nigerian lakes
The article focused on Nigerian lakesThe work assessed development options in general and transport development options in particular, open to governments and states surrounding lakes. The methodology applied in the study includes random sampling through interviews of major companies in the region. For lakes situated in a desert environment the sustainable development pathway would be the avoidance and prevention of desertification through policies that favour lake expansivity. Processes that favour the expansivity of lake volume through dredging and channeling of rivers to the lake environment should be sought. The work suggested that installation of boundaries or moles to prevent building of sand dunes by lake boundaries be applied where possible. States utilizing such lakes should develop sustainable development policies to be applied in the process of utilizing the marine resources existing in the lakes. In the area ofrenewable resources like fishes, the commodity should be designed to be harvested to an optimum sustainable level. For non-renewable resources, like under water minerals the number of contractors accepted into the region should be limited to an optimum sustainable level approved by the states concerned. Other lakes not suffering from desertification as well as all lakes should be made to adopt the new environment standards of the oceans that emphasize prevention of oil spills such as MARPOL 73/78 (International Convention on Marine
Pollution Prevention from Ships 1973 and the protocol thereto 1978) etc. Furthermore, the renewable energy resources of the lakes where it is made open to interested firms should be made to be tapped in a sustainable manner. Major Nigerian lakes such as the Oguta lake of Nigeria, Lake Chad situated between Nigeria, Niger and Cameron were made the major focus of this study. Reliability evaluation of onitsha power distribution network via analytical technique and the impact of PV system
This article contains figuresThis paper evaluates the Reliability of Onitsha power distribution network using analytical technique and the level of improvement achievable through application of photovoltaic (PV) system at injection substations. ETAP simulation software was used to run the power flow and reliability assessment of the Network. The investigation revealed that before the PV installations the total revenue lost due to outages in 2009, 2010 and 2011 amounted to N17,439,247,940; N28,718,370,004 and N61,131,521,807 respectively. Whereas after the PV installation the total revenue lost reduced to N6,769,656,987, N12,718,370,004 and N21,359,660,013 respectively representing 61.2%, 55.7% and 65.1% reduction in revenue loss for the period under review

Adaptive strategies for delayed onset of rainfall for maize production in tropical rainforest of SouthEastern Nigeria
The Doctoral research was carried out in crop philosophyDelayed onset of rainfall constrains farmers across the humid southern Nigeria to delay planting, until the rain is established, as a means of avoiding the moisture stress imposed.
Field experiments were therefore conducted in 2009 and 2010 to assess the impacts of delayed onset of rainfall with a view to determining appropriate adaptation strategies for the
production of maize in the southeastern rainforest zone of Nigeria. The study was a split-split plot laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Four sowing dates (February 28, March 15, March 30 and April 14) were the main plots, three maize varieties (TZE COMP3 C3, TZL COMP4 C3 and OKA AWAKA) the sub-plots and two poultry
manure rates (0 and 10 tons/ha) constituted the sub-sub plots. The main plots measured 13.25 x 7m, subplots were 3.75 x 7m and sub-subplots were 3.75 x 3m. Maize was sown at a
population of 53,333 plants ha¬-1 (0.75 x 0.25m). Plant parameters measured included vegetative growth parameters (at 2, 4 and 6weeks after planting), reproductive growth
parameters and grain yield. Other measurements were soil temperature and moisture content. The results showed that in 2009 and 2010 maize planted on February 28 and March 15
generally had reduced vegetative growth compared to maize planted on March 30 and April 14 due to moisture deficit. Stem dry matter was reduced by 85.3% in 2009 when maize planted on March 15 and April 14 was compared and by 81.4% in 2010 when maize planted on March 15 and March 30 was compared. Moisture stress also delayed attainment of maize physiological maturity by 6.0 and 11.0 days in 2009 and 8.0 and 10.0 days in 2010 when maize planted on February 28 was compared to maize planted on March 30 and April 14
respectively. Grain yield reduction was 26.6% in 2010. The late maturing varieties (TZL COMP4 C3 and OKA AWAKA) were superior to the early maturing variety with regard to
vegetative and reproductive growth.Variety TZL COMP4 C3 which had the lowest anthesis silking interval(5.0 days) is considered the most physiologically desirable among the three maize varieties. Application of 10tons/ha of poultry manure significantly increased vegetative growth and hastened maturity in maize. Poultry manure significantly increased maize yield
components and resulted in 33.3 and 61.3% increase in grain yield in 2009 and 2010 respectively. The results from this study showed that poultry manure application, selection of
variety and time of planting are effective strategies for adaptation to the impacts of delayed onset of rainfall in the humid rainforest zone of Nigeria

reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly citedAdsorption of Fe3+/Fe2+ from a polluted shallow well water onto a palm kernel shell activated carbon (PKSAC) has been studied. Batch experiment was adopted to study the Removal efficiency of Fe3+/Fe2+ on varying contact time, temperature, adsorbent loading and concentrations. Equilibrium isotherm and kinetic were also studied. Removal efficiency progressed with contact time till the peak adsorption time of 100 minutes when the efficiency remained at equilibrium. Also, removal efficiency got to equilibrium at the peak values of 80ºC, 4.8g and 12.5mg/l for temperature, adsorbent loading and concentration variations respectively. The adsorption isotherm models fitted the isotherm data got at 25ºC, 40ºC and 80ºC in this order; Langmuir > Temkin>Freunlich. The dimensionless separation factor of 0.012, 0.017 and 0.015 for 25ºC, 40ºC and 80ºC respectively confirmed favorable adsorption of Fe3+/Fe2+ on the PKSAC adsorbent. Langmuir adsorption capacity increased from 203.9mg Fe3+/Fe2+/g to 389.3 mg Fe3+/Fe2+/g when the
temperature increased from 25ºC to 40ºC but decreased to 308.1 mg Fe3+/Fe2+/g at temperature of 80ºC. The kinetic models described the kinetic study data got at 25ºC, 40ºC and 80ºC as follows; power-function>second-order>Elovick>intra-diffusion>first-order kinetics. Mass transfer through liquid film diffusion controlled the adsorption of Fe3+/Fe2+ onto PKSAC. Negative values of the Thermodynamic parameters (Δ , Δ and Δ) got at various temperature values showed favorability of adsorption of Fe3+/Fe2+ onto PKSAC.nIt is therefore concluded that PKSAC removed Fe3+/Fe2+ from aqueous solution

Characterization of Ibere clay for the production of electrical porcelain pin insulators
This article contain tables and figuresThe characterization of Ibere clay for the production of porcelain pin insulators was carried out for both the locally made porcelains and the standard. Test samples were made by varying the compositions of feldspar and quartz needed to form a mouldable plastic body with the clay. The following properties were determined: electrical resistivity, apparent porosity, water absorption, bulk density and linear shrinkage. Results obtained showed that apparent porosity, water absorption and electrical resistivity increased with increase in the composition of the non-plastic materials (feldspar and quartz) while bulk density and linear shrinkage decreased with increase in non-plastic materials. The chemical composition of the clay (43.94%SiO2, 26.54%Al2O3) compares well with previous works (40-60%Si2O, 25-45%l2O3) for the production of ceramic refractories. Linear shrinkage (8.33-9.68%), apparent porosity (10.81-17.30%) and water absorption (5.4110.84%) are in conformity with standards (7-10%, 16.45% and 8.20% respectively). Electrical resistivities recorded (0.79-1.39 x 107Ω-m) are in agreement with results obtained for standard (0.45 x 107Ω-m). These results are obtained in samples containing 50-70% clay, 20-30% feldspar and 10-20% quartz. It is therefore concluded that imported porcelains used by Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) can be replaced with porcelains made from Ibere clay
