Performance of water injection in oil rim reservoir recovery factor
This article contains figures and tablesThis study examines the potential improvements in recovery factors in optimizing oil production from oil rim reservoirs through water injection and without water injection (i.e. primary production) scenarios in the development strategies of the oil rim reservoirs.A generic simulation model developed from ECLIPSE dynamic simulator was used as core representative of oil rim reservoirs to experiment production optimization with and without water injection. Reservoir data of permeability, oil rim thickness, fluid properties, m-factor, aquifer strength and process parameters sampled from the Niger Delta oil field were used and a lacket-Burman Design of experiment (DOE) was used to give a central sensitivity results from the simulation runs. Recovery factors were obtained for the two different production scenarios: primary production and production under water injection. Regression analyses were carried out on the experimental results to generate proxyequations for recovery factor for the two production scenarios. It was observed that the use of water injection is irrelevant for oil rims with active water aquifer. However, waterinjection will increase the ultimate recovery of oil rim reservoirs under weak aquifer
Patterns of diarrhoeal diseases in under-five children in Emekuku: A hospital-based study
The Master's Thesis contains tables and figuresThis study was undertaken to determine the patterns of diarrhoeal diseases in under-5 children and the associated risk factors in Emekuku, Imo State, Nigeria. A matched pair case control study design with strict inclusion and exclusion criteria was adopted. Cases were children with loose watery feces, pathologically diagnosed with diarrhoea by the physician. Each case was captured immediately after diagnosis by the physician and administered with the questionnaire. Controls were children diagnosed of any other disease other than diarrhoea. Both cases and controls were appropriately matched in terms of age, sex, and other determinants and enrolled from the outpatient and children’s wards of the Hospital. A total of 176 under-5 children were enrolled with 88 cases and 88 controls. The results showed that most cases of diarrhoea observed were acute (93.2%), while persistent diarrhoea accounted for 6.8%. Ninety five percent (95%) of diarrhoeal cases were watery, with mean number of stools/child/day being 4.3 times (SD 1.92). Of the 17 exposure variables analyzed, only age (6-11 month); breast feeding (complementary feeding) (P<0.001); birth weight, maternal employment (unemployed women); toilet type (pit toilet); hand washing with water only (P<0.001); use of rain water and crowding index were significantly associated with diarrhoeal disease occurrence observed in this studied. The study shows that diarrhoeal diseases are still prevalent in this area. Interventions on exclusive breast feeding, provision of improved toilet type, and education on appropriate hand washing methods and improved sanitation should be intensified.Department of Public Health Technology, FUT
Environmental challenges associated with oil spillage and gas flaring in Nigeria: A review
The article is a reviewA review is presented of the environmental challenges associated with oil spillage and gas flaring in Nigeria. It analyzes the types, causes, and remediation processes, for oil spillage and the prevention and control measures available for minimising environmental problems of oil spills in the oil-producing communities of Nigeria. Generally, Oil spills cause series of severe aquatic and terrestrial pollutions, and they impact negatively on crop production, due to soil infertility that results from the destruction of soil microorganisms, thereby causing dwindling agricultural productivity, plus other side effects on human health. The potential harmful effects of gas flaring on the environment including global warming and human exposure to acute harmful substances that cause respiratory problems (such as asthma and chronic bronchitis) are critically considered. Likewise other chemicals like benzapyrene, which causes cancer, and benzene, which causes leukemia and other blood-related disease are highlighted. Gas’ flaring also causes acid rain which corrodes homes and other local structures. Some techniques that should be utilized to prevent and control these challenges have been outlined and some policy recommendations made to help curb abuses by multinational oil and gas companies operating in the country
Integrating indigenous knowledge system in extension education: The potential for sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria
This research article contains tables and figuresThis paper looks at the integration of indigenous knowledge system in Extension education with the aim of promoting sustainable agricultural development. It explores the meaning of indigenous knowledge and extension education. Attempts made in the past to achieve agricultural development, provide rationale to valuing indigenous knowledge and integrating indigenous knowledge in extension education. Efforts have been made in the past in pursuit of agricultural development but few of those involved in these effort including those in extension services take the trouble to understand the farmers and their indigenous knowledge rather the farmers are often described in generalization as ultra –conservative, steeped in tradition, hemmed in by custom, lacking in motivation and inactive, captive to age-old methods, incapable of making wise decisions. There have however, been a growing consensus now that some of the solutions to the problems that currently plague agricultural development must proceed from the role of understanding the dynamics within the local context and local capacities. Such dynamics include the roles of indigenous knowledge and practice in sustainable agricultural development. This can be achieved by integrating indigenous knowledge into the extension education system to address some of the knowledge deficiencies for development that is currently formulated from the western perspective. There is therefore a need for paradigm shift towards harnessing indigenous knowledge for the development of extension service since sustainable agriculture in all nations will require greater scientific respect for and more effective collaboration with those who possess the wisdom of generations of non scientific farming. It is in the face of this that indigenous knowledge becomes handy especially in its ability to promote sustainable agricultural development
Geotechnical assessment of Akpulu gully erosion site in Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria

Part of Akpulu
community especially Okwu village that is very close to the gully head may submerge in the next few years if control measures are not intensified. A gully measured 15-18 m deep, 9-12 m wide to 6.5 km long is advancing
aggressively, threatening life, property, food production, and security of ecosystem in Akpulu and its environs. Analysis of soil samples collected from accessible portion of the gully depths of 3 m show peculiar geotechnical characteristics ranging from Liquid limits 27.5 – 30.4%, Plastic limits 17.35 – 22.75%, and Plasticity index 7.65-13.70%. The soil has highclay/silt content, with ranges of maximum dry density (2.01- 2.06g/m3), Optimum moisture content (12.1-13.4%), and average shear strength of 106.9KN/m2 It is easily erodible, as the silt gets dissolved by high velocity flood on 0.02 flow gradient. Expansion and maintenance of the main drainage channel from Umuchu to Akpakporo River in Apkulu is
recommended. Secondary drainage channels to join the main channel, and increased trees planting from the gully head are also recommended
Modeling lateral distribution of heavy metal and bio-accumulation in earthworm in the varying acidic surface horizon of waste-polluted soil
This article contains tables and figuresHeavy metal concentrations and its distributions in the soil have been a source of concern to soil usage, particularly to agriculture as concentration and distribution of heavy metal determine to a large extent, the soil quality and consequently that of the crops. The ability to quantify the amount of heavy metal in the soil is of immense importance to soil management. The use of accurate model is essential to estimate the actual soil heavy metal values and its distribution for efficient management. In this study, soil and earthworm samples of the battery-waste-polluted site and that of the background site were collected from five different locations(A,B,C,D and E) along the gradient of decreasing pollution. With five replicates each form one sampling location, twenty–five soil and fifty earthworms samples (two earthworms from each replicate) were collected using stratified random sampling technique. Lead(pb), Cadmium(Cd), Chromium(Cr), Nickel(Ni), Manganese(Mn), Arsenic(As), pH and Mercury(Hg) were analyzed using standard methods. The same process was replicated for the background site. Values of the heavy metals in soil and earthworms were natural and typical of Ameki-Nanka-soil formation. The average range of heavy metals concentrations in soil and earthworm samples from the polluted site were; pb(1025-695 mg/kg), Cd(11.34-6.3 mg/kg), Mn(290-81 mg/kg), pH(2.3-6.9mg/kg),Cr(185-3.7 mg/kg), Ni(12.87-1.7 mg/kg), As(72-4.5 mg/kg), Hg(1.7-0.002mg/kg) and pb(193-37.98 mg/kg), Cd(14.04-0.01 mg/kg), Mn(17.34-1.10mg/kg), pH(6.9-2.3mg/kg), Cr(8.45-0.01 mg/kg), Ni(1.41-0.03 mg/kg), As(0.75-0.01 mg/kg), Hg(0.4-0.009mg/kg) respectively. Concentrations of heavy metals for soil and earthworm samples decreased along the gradient of decreasing pollution of the polluted site. Three models(Linear , Logarithmic and quadratic models) were developed to test their suitability to the data in which Ph was correlated with heavy metals. Inverse correlation was observed with coefficient R2 of between 0.77-0.95 and lowest percentage deviation of the field from the predicted values
Prevalence and antibiotic sensitivity profile of urinary tract infection pathogens among pregnant and non pregnant women
The article is an original paper with tables and figuresThe prevalence and antibiotic sensitivity profile of urinary tract infection isolates from 100 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in Owerri General Hospital, Nigeria was assessed. The prevalence of UTI isolates from the pregnant women was compared with that in non-pregnant women. The organisms isolated include: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Coagulase negative Staphylococcus, Klebsiella spp, Pseudomonas spp, Proteus spp and Streptococcus spp. Antibiotic sensitivity pattern of the isolates were also determined using disk diffusion test. One hundred (100) women were tested; 40% had bacteriuria as against 31% in non-pregnant women. The most sensitive isolate was E. coli, while the least was Streptococcus spp. The most effective antibiotics were Gentamycin, Tarivid and Ciprofloxacin, while the least occurred with Chloramphenicol, Ampicillin, Septrin, Ampiclox. Improvement on personal hygiene and diagnostic screening and treatment will help to reduce the prevalence of bacteriuria in pregnancy. There is also the need for regular antibiotic survey as this will ensure up to date information on the usefulness of the various antibiotics to treat infection thereby avoiding drug resistance as a result of continuous usage of drugs that are not sensitive to some microorganisms
