A Review of economic potentials of the river port of Onitsha

between people. This study aims to review the economic potentials of the Onitsha inland river port. The study adopted a mixed method research design as data were sourced from the secondary source (NIWA, NPA statistical bulletins & journals) and primary source using a well-structured likert modelled questionnaires administered to about 50 respondents. The data gathered were subjected to analysis using tools such as Analytical hierarchy process (AHP), Time series modeller and Trend analysis with the aid of AHP calculator and IBM Statistics Package for Social Scientists (SPSS V21) computer software. The findings depicts that the volume of import cargos from seaports destined for the southeast states which forms the hinterland for the river port shows a significant positive trend estimated by the linear regression line Y = 14075X – 18057. The time series modeller used to analyze the cargo trend series shows an acceptable value of R-squared and stationary R-squared of 72.3% and a mean average percentage error of 50.066%, indicating that the present are approximately 50% short of predicted volume by trend. The AHP results indicate that inland waterways (0.5276), road (trucking) (0.2527) and air (0.2197) in that order are the preferred mode of freight movement for logistics operators in the south east if presented with alternatives. The following factors in descending order forms the basis of their choice of freight means; safety (0.6026), timeliness (0.1822), costs (0.1174), efficiency (0.0691) and carrying capacity (0.0286). In conclusion, the southeast bound import cargoes from the seaports can well serve the Onitsha river port and are even short of their projected volume for the time period under study. It was recommended that the government should ensure continuous dredging of inland waterways and river banks to ensure all round navigability of the waterways. Government or future concessionaires of Onitsha river port should ensure installation of handling and storage facilities for bulk agricultural products like grain storage silos, pumps and tanks for vegetable oil, etc. to ensure the river port is capable of handling shipments of bulk agricultural products
Predictive modeling of Nigerian peak condensate using Hubbert’s zero annual reserve rate
A research article with figures and tablesIn this work, a model was developed using Kamalu’s (2010) natural resource depletion word equation in one hand and Hubbert zero rate of annual reserve concept on the other hand. Experimental data was collected from Nigerian Ministry of Petroleum and Minerals, 7 Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos to validate the model. It gave coefficient of correlation of 0.99997 and 0.99517 for discovery and production of Nigerian condensate respectively. It was also established that Nigerian condensate will exhaust in the year 2518 AD when the discovery and production values will be equal to 110MMB. The research reveals that there is a gentle interaction between the cumulative discovery and production and serious interaction between annual discovery and production as years roll by. Well productivity enhancement using matrix acidizing-a Niger Delta case
This article contains figures and tables.As a result of the rapid reduction in productivity of well B14, south west of the Niger Delta region, the need to investigate the cause of the damage was initiated. When it was identified fine migration as the major cause of the production decline, acid stimulation was recommended as the mitigation strategy.
Acid (matrix) stimulation practice involves the pumping of acid into the formation through the wellbore at the rates and pressures below the fracture gradient of the formation. Conventionally, hydrochloric acid (HCL) is used for carbonate formations while hydrofluoric acid (HF)/ mud acid (HCL +HF) is best suited for sandstone formations. Also, in a very high damaged formation and very high temperature environment that requires prolong contact of the HCL acid with the
steel pipe, due to the severe corrosion that will occur, organic acids are more suitable. In stimulating this well, mud acid was used and the well was stimulated using organic mud acid or organic clay acid. Stimulating this well led to a total incremental production gain of over 485 BOPD (150% gain) however a corresponding reduction in skin was not observed This paper reviews and highlights the operational best practices as utilized in this project as well as the potential cause for an increase in skin even after a stimulation job
Studies on optimal conditions for the preservation of ‘Zobo’ drink
The research article has figure and tablesThe study was carried out to determine the combination of preservation techniques (hurdles) that can best extend the shelf life of Zobo drink. Zobo drink was prepared from the calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa. Two types of spices - Zingiber officinale (ginger) and Caryophillus oromatics (cloves) were prepared and added in the following proportions 150g: 20g; 150g:10g; 100g:20g; and 100g:10g respectively, to 400ml of zobo drink. Samples of the drink were pasteurized at two different temperatures 167 C for 5min and 72 C for 6 min. All the samples were stored at ambient temperature (30 ± 20) for 9 days. Microbial analysis was performed on the samples every 2 days. The various combinations of the spices alone could not preserve the drink beyond 2 days, but, when coupled with pasteurization, the shelf life was extended. A combination of ginger (150g) and cloves (20g) was found to be more effective, and when in conjunction with pasteurization, kept the drink in sterile condition for 3 days, and extended the shelf life to 5 day
